2025-09-01 - 2025-12-31

4. Where will this proposal be implemented? (required)

5. Are your activities part of a Wikimedia movement campaign, project, or event? If so, please select the relevant project or campaign. (required)

Other (please specify) Wikimedians within the Wikimedia movement

6. What is the change you are trying to bring? What are the main challenges or problems you are trying to solve? Describe this change or challenges, as well as main approaches to achieve it. (required)

Indonesia is currently experiencing a significant demographic bonus, which presents both great opportunities and challenges. If this potential, especially that of the younger generation, is not optimally utilized, it will result in great losses. On the other hand, there are still many regions in Indonesia that are underrepresented in Indonesian-language Wikimedia projects, both in terms of information coverage and visual documentation. The lack of comprehensive and reliable content limits public understanding and access to valuable knowledge. This proposal aims to make Indonesian-language Wikimedia projects such as Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons a trusted and comprehensive source of information and visual documentation about various regions in Indonesia. To achieve this, we will involve the younger generation, especially high school students from these regions, so that they can actively contribute to the dissemination of local knowledge and support the utilization of Indonesia's demographic bonus.

Our approach includes: 1) Improving the quality and quantity of local knowledge content on Indonesian Wikipedia and visual documentation on Wikimedia Commons through contributions from students and local communities; 2) Increasing the utilization and visibility of articles and images related to local places, culture, and history by students, educators, researchers, and the general public; and 3) Building a sustainable, skilled and dedicated community of contributors to document areas that are still underrepresented in Indonesia's digital space.

7. What are the planned activities? (required) Please provide a list of main activities. You can also add a link to the public page for your project where details about your project can be found. Alternatively, you can upload a timeline document. When the activities include partnerships, include details about your partners and planned partnerships.

Related to our goals and objectives, our activities are: 1) Conducting an initial content assessment to identify underrepresented topics and images related to local knowledge. We will start by mapping the existing local content coverage (e.g., culture, geography, traditions, landmarks) on Indonesian Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons, focusing on selected regions. We will also conduct initial discussions with local schools, cultural offices, and several local wikimedia communities to align priority topics that reflect the uniqueness of each region; 2) Managing a capacity building program for students and teachers. We will facilitate a blended training program (offline and online) that introduces students and accompanying teachers to the basics of Wikipedia editing, writing neutral and sourced content, and uploading photos to Wikimedia Commons; 3) Conducting writing and documentation workshops in three different regions with 3 schools. In collaboration with local Wikimedia community and schools, we will organize a series of on-site workshops. Each workshop will guide participants in researching, writing, and refining a Wikipedia article about their region. At the same time, students will be encouraged to take original photos of important places and cultural activities in their region to upload to Wikimedia Commons; 4) Organize a locally themed Wikipedia edit-a-thon and Wikicommons upload session. After each workshop, we will organize an offline edit-a-thon. Our total goal is to edit or create at least 60 new or existing articles and upload 60 new images during the project. A public dashboard will be created to monitor participation and results; 5) Provide mentoring, incentives, and recognition. Throughout the project, experienced Wikipedians will mentor student editors. Editors who complete assigned article or photo assignments will receive digital certificates and incentives, with special recognition given to the most active and impactful contributors in each region; and 6) Conduct evaluation and reflection sessions. At the end of each regional activity, we will collect feedback via Google Forms and hold short reflection sessions with students and teachers to evaluate learning outcomes, challenges, and future opportunities for continued contribution.

(required) Include more details of the team, including their roles, usernames, Wikimedia group, and whether they are salaried, volunteers, consultants/contractors, etc. Team members involved in the grant application need to be aware of their involvement in the project.

9. Who are the target participants and from which community? How will you engage participants before and during the activities? How will you follow up with participants after the activities? (required)

The target participants are students and a supervising teacher from three different schools of five different cities in East Java; SMAN 7 Malang, SMAN 3 Kediri, and SMAN 1 Bangkalan. We target high school students who are unfamiliar with Wikimedia projects to become new contributors and volunteers. We initially engage with participants through reaching out to each school and we would later bring along ~10 students and a teacher to visit locations planned beforehand and collect relevant information & data. We will then proceed to the editing session and gift souvenirs for participants

Yes

10.1. Please provide a link to your Youth Safety Policy. 11. How did you discuss the idea of your project with your community members and/or any relevant groups? Please describe steps taken and provide links to any on-wiki community discussion(s) about the proposal. (required) You need to inform the community and/or group, discuss the project with them, and involve them in planning this proposal. You also need to align the activities with other projects happening in the planned area of implementation to ensure collaboration within the community.

1) Initial Consultation with WikiKlub UB We began by discussing the idea with members of WikiKlub Universitas Brawijaya (UB), a university-based Wikimedia group actively involved in Wikipedia editing, to gather early feedback. The group provided valuable insights on previous outreach models, training strategies, and content focus areas that resonate with students;

2) Internal Team Discussions Our core team held multiple coordination meetings both online (via Google Meet) and in person at local cafes in Malang. These sessions allowed us to develop the program structure, timeline, and risk assessment while ensuring that each team member contributed their expertise to the design of the project;

3) Collaborating with Local Contacts and Alumni We reached out to friends, peers, and alumni from the target high schools and regions to understand the local context and specific educational needs. This informal but meaningful collaboration helped ensure the program content and approach would be relevant and accessible for the students we aim to engage;

4) Feedback and Revision Process Based on the feedback we received from these consultations, we made several revisions to our plan. This included adjusting the workshop topics, simplifying editing training for high school audiences, and emphasizing contributions related to local culture, history, and environment.

Learning and metrics

[edit]
17. What do you hope to learn from your work in this project or proposal? (required)

I hope to learn how to effectively bridge the gap between local knowledge and digital platforms, especially in Indonesian. I aim to gain a deeper understanding of how digital literacy can be used as a tool for cultural preservation and community empowerment. By collaborating with students and local communities, I hope to develop skills in knowledge sharing, community engagement, and participatory documentation. I also look forward to improving my abilities in writing and editing for digital platforms, curating culturally sensitive content, and ensuring that underrepresented local histories and tourism sites are accurately and respectfully documented. I want to learn how to contribute meaningfully to an open knowledge ecosystem while encouraging others especially youth to take part in preserving and promoting their local heritage in the digital age.
