Indonesia is one of the largest archipelagic nations in the world, with 84,291 villages, 30% of which are located on the island of Java, the center of life for 55% of Indonesia’s population. However, information and knowledge about villages in Java remain very limited on Wikimedia platforms. Most article consist of nothing more than a single-paragraph, and there is a lack of in-depth information on topics such as history, geography, demographics, the economy, arts, culture, and tourism potential. Yet these villages possess unique characteristics and distinctive tourism potential. This situation is particularly evident in the Greater Malang area, specifically the cities of Batu and Malang, which are widely recognized as one of the main tourist destinations in East Java, with dozens of villages that have developed into tourist villages, 24 of which are located in the city of Batu alone and are considered advanced and self-sufficient, even though their local potential is acknowledged as not yet fully tapped. Despite their significant tourism potential, digital documentation of these tourism villages on Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons remains far from adequate. This is what prompted us to propose this project, WikiOnDesa, to establish Wikimedia projects such as the Indonesian Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons as trusted and comprehensive sources of information and visual documentation regarding the tourist villages in the Greater Malang area, with an initial pilot project in 5 tourist villages (3 in Batu City and 2 in Malang City). We are using an approach that: 1. Conduct a literature review of credible published sources, such as data from the Central Statistics Agency (BPS), official village/subdistrict government websites, the Ministry of Domestic Affairs website, government documents and reports, scientific journal articles, and mass media coverage, as the basis for writing Wikipedia articles on the history, development status, and potential of tourist villages. 2. Conducting field visits to tourism villages to take high quality photos and gather location and geographic data, which are then uploaded and integrated into Wikimedia Commons and Wikidata to fill gaps in visual documentation and structured data. In addition, we also involve a professional photographer to maintain content quality. 3. Develop and implement the method we devised: CEK DESA method (Cerita/Story, Ekonomi/Economy, Kondisi Wilayah/Regional Conditions, Demografi/Demographics, Etnis dan Budaya/Ethnicity & Culture, Struktur Pemerintahan/Government Structure, Akses dan Infrastruktur/Access & Infrastructure), as a standard framework for creating comprehensive, high quality village articles, which can also be used by other Wikimedia communities outside our team to supplement village articles in a consistent and validated manner. 4. Organizing Wiki Training sessions for participants to equip them with the skills to independently and sustainably document the potential of their own regions. 5. Building an ecosystem of skilled, active, and long-term committed contributors to continue documenting underrepresented tourist villages in Indonesia’s digital space.

7. What are the planned activities? (required) Please provide a list of main activities. You can also add a link to the public page for your project where details about your project can be found. Alternatively, you can upload a timeline document. When the activities include partnerships, include details about your partners and planned partnerships.

The WikiOnDesa project aims to document local knowledge about tourist villages in the Greater Malang area on the Wikimedia platform, with a pilot project in five tourist villages: Polowijen, Rampal Celaket, Gunungsari, Punten, and Pandan Rejo. These five villages were selected because their articles on the Indonesian Wikipedia are still sparse and less visible compared to those of neighboring tourist villages, such as Klojen, Junrejo, and Bumiaji. To achieve this, we are taking several key steps: Wikimedia Commons documentation in each village; WikiLatih workshops for participants to write Wikipedia articles using the CEK DESA method we developed; Wikidata completion by the committee; a simultaneous edit-a-thon with the local Wikimedia community; and a photography contest and exhibition as a sustainable approach to maintaining participant engagement after the event. Throughout the project, participants will receive direct guidance from the committee. The series of field activities is divided into three batches. Batch 1 (November 7-8, 2026) covers the villages of Polowijen and Rampal Celaket, where participants and committees will document both villages on Wikimedia Commons, followed by a WikiLatih session to edit Wikipedia articles using the CEK DESA method, with 10 participants and 6 committees taking part. Batch 2 (November 14-15, 2026) covered the villages of Gunungsari and Punten with the same activity format, attended by 10 participants and 6 committees. Batch 3 (November 21, 2026) covered the village of Pandan Rejo, concluding with a similar activity format, attended by 10 participants and 6 committees. After the entire series of field visits is completed, the activities will continue with a simultaneous edit-a-thon on November 22, 2026, organized in collaboration with Wikimedia Bandung, Wikimedia Yogyakarta, and Wikimedia Madura. On that date, each community will hold a community gathering in its respective area, then jointly participate in the edit-a-thon session to edit and complete articles about tourist villages on the Indonesian Wikipedia. To ensure participants’ continued engagement after the main event concludes, we are also organizing a photography contest themed around tourist villages (November 23-December 7, 2026), open to the public with a target of 20 participants: the results will be featured in a photo exhibition on December 12, 2026. Through this series of activities, we aim to achieve concrete outcomes: 30 articles on the Indonesian Wikipedia (1 participant writing 1 village article), 100 photos on Wikimedia Commons (20 photos per village, with 2 photos per category such as village gates, schools, and village halls), and 60 data items on Wikidata, which will be added directly by the committee.

8. Describe your team. Please provide their roles, Wikimedia Usernames and other details. (required) Include more details of the team, including their roles, usernames, Wikimedia group, and whether they are salaried, volunteers, consultants/contractors, etc. Team members involved in the grant application need to be aware of their involvement in the project.

9. Who are the target participants and from which community? How will you engage participants before and during the activities? How will you follow up with participants after the activities? (required)

The target number of participants for this project is 80 people from various communities. For the Greater Malang field cluster, we are targeting 30 participants, consisting of 10 participants for Batch 1 in the villages of Polowijen and Rampal Celaket, 10 participants for Batch 2 in the villages of Gunungsari and Punten, and 10 participants for Batch 3 in Pandan Rejo Village. We are prioritizing participants who already possess basic Wikipedia editing skills rather than new contributors, because the CEK DESA method we have developed will be more effectively taught to participants who already understand the basic editing mechanisms. Before the series of activities began, we held a CEK DESA Method Upgrading session on November 18, 2026, specifically for the coordinators (PIC) from each partner community (Wikimedia Bandung, Yogyakarta, and Madura) so that they could pass this method on to their respective community members. Throughout the event, we guided the field cluster participants, together with the organizing committee, to document content for Wikimedia Commons directly in the field through intensive mentoring. This was followed by a WikiLatih session on editing Wikipedia articles about villages using the CEK DESA method, and we concluded the day’s activities by presenting certificates and souvenirs to the participants. Meanwhile, for the collaborative edit-a-thon cluster, we brought together 30 participants who are also experienced Wikimedia contributors, including 10 from Bandung (West Java), 10 from Yogyakarta (DIY), and 10 from Madura (East Java). Each community first held a community gathering in its own region, which also served as a session for project coordinators to teach the CEK DESA method to community members, before jointly participating in a simultaneous edit-a-thon to edit the profiles of tourist villages in their respective regions on the Indonesian Wikipedia. As a follow-up after the entire series of activities was completed, we directed participants in the field clusters to take part in a photography contest themed around tourism villages, the results of which were displayed in a photo exhibition. Meanwhile, for all clusters, the organizing committee maintained communication through digital groups to facilitate ongoing editing consultations and monitor participants’ contribution progress via the outreach dashboard.

11. How did you discuss the idea of your project with your community members and/or any relevant groups? Please describe steps taken and provide links to any on-wiki community discussion(s) about the proposal. (required) You need to inform the community and/or group, discuss the project with them, and involve them in planning this proposal. You also need to align the activities with other projects happening in the planned area of implementation to ensure collaboration within the community.

1. We discussed this project idea with members of the Brawijaya University Wiki Club, a campus-based Wikimedia community actively editing Wikipedia and other Wikimedia projects. From these consultations, we learned that several members of the Wiki Club UB, who are currently enrolled students had previously carried out similar activities on a small scale in a village as part of a community service program. Their firsthand experience provided us with valuable insights into identifying technical challenges and understanding the dynamics of implementing activities in the field. 2. The core team held a series of coordination meetings, both online via Google Meet and in person at several cafes in Malang. These meetings focused on developing the program structure, setting a timeline, and mapping out the project’s operational risk management. 3. We have established communication and coordination with local Wikimedia communities and volunteers, namely Wikimedia Bandung, Yogyakarta, and Madura. This collaboration helps us understand the local context, identify the villages’ potential that should be highlighted, and develop educational approaches tailored to the characteristics of the communities in each region. 4. Based on the input we gathered through these various discussions, we made several adjustments to our work plan to ensure the program could be implemented more effectively and precisely in the field.

Learning and metrics

[edit]
17. What do you hope to learn from your work in this project or proposal? (required)

We hope to learn how to bridge the gap between the potential of tourist villages and their visibility on digital platforms through the implementation of the WikiOnDesa project in Greater Malang. We want to understand how the CEK DESA method we developed can help document villages' history, economy, regional conditions, demographics, culture, and access and infrastructure in a comprehensive and consistent way, while also serving as a framework that can be adopted by other Wikimedia communities to extend its impact. Through collaboration with the Wikimedia communities in Bandung, Yogyakarta, and Madura, we also hope to develop our ability to coordinate simultaneous cross-regional edit-a-thons, so that this method can be carried forward and applied by other communities to document the potential of their own regions. In addition, we hope this project can foster participants' sense of ownership over their villages and local heritage, encouraging more people to voluntarily and sustainably continue documenting and sharing their region's potential on Wikimedia platforms.
