This pilot program aims to enhance Wikipedia literacy in Cebu by equipping students, professionals, and the general public with essential editing skills. This initiative addresses several key challenges:
1. Limited Awareness & Participation: Many individuals in Cebu are unfamiliar with Wikipedia’s editing process, limiting local contributions.
2. Quality & Representation of Local Knowledge: Cebuano Wikipedia is one of the largest language editions, yet much of its content was generated by Lsjbot, an automated tool that created millions of articles. While this expanded the encyclopedia’s reach, it also raised concerns about content quality and the need for human editors to refine and expand articles. For historical context, global community discussion is seen at https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Proposals_for_closing_projects/Closure_of_Cebuano_Wikipedia

3. Sustained Engagement & Mentorship: New editors often struggle with retention due to long established policies from the pioneer members of the Wikimedia community and the lack of structured support.
To address these challenges, the project follows a three-phase model:
1. Needs Assessment: Identifying articles to create / improve and understanding the needs of different target groups such as students, subject matter professionals willing to share their valuable content and reliable sources, and others in the general public.
2. Training Proper: Conducting structured training sessions covering Wikipedia fundamentals, policies, and best practices for content creation.
3. Mentoring & Collaborative Editing: Pairing participants with experienced ESEAP regional Wikipedia editors via virtual meeting ensures a long-term engagement. Follow-up event, such as a post-training editing meetup, will encourage continued collaboration on articles of their interest.
This pilot program builds on existing efforts of WikiClub Cebu, which launched last December 2024 to foster a local Wikipedia editing community. It shows potential for collaborative editing and knowledge-sharing. By integrating mentorship and structured training, this program will empower Cebuano contributors to improve Wikipedia’s content quality and ensure that knowledge from locals is well-represented.
- 7. What are the planned activities? (required) Please provide a list of main activities. You can also add a link to the public page for your project where details about your project can be found. Since the establishment of Wikiclub Cebu, we were able to form a new and revitalized Cebuano wiki community. As a neophyte group, we discuss our future plans and activities in small meetups, in social media platforms and with partners that we are working with such as the academe, the public sector and a few national government agencies who are supportive of our cause.
We are also in touch monthly with SKAP online, as they continue to guide and support us and walking us through in facing challenges, giving us skills audit. We do consultations with our partners but we realize that what is needed at this moment is for us to be proficient in editing and mastering the basics of Wikipedia editing.
