Part 1: Project and impact

We implemented the Wiki Pagkat-on Sa Sugbo (Wiki Learning Sessions in Cebu) program to encourage Cebuanos to learn about various Wikipedia projects. It was a sort of Introduction to the world of Wikipedia and its sister projects. We need to reintroduce the open knowledge platform to as many Cebuanos as possible and present ownership for the Cebuano Wikipedia, one of the largest language Wikipedias, uncreated mainly by humans. Partnership with cultural organizations such as the Cebu City Public library and the Tourism Office yielded good results to help achieve our goals as we were able to tap government offices and access good venues from the partmership. Academic institutions also started working with Wikiclub Cebu in Wikiliteracy programs and as a result of Wikiclub Cebu's small milestones, it served as a case study for other Wikiclubs to be established in nearby cities.

You can recall these learning questions below: Through this pilot, we aim to gain valuable insights into effective community-driven approaches for increasing Wikipedia literacy and engagement. Specifically, we hope to learn:

1. Best Practices for Wikipedia Training in Local Contexts

  - Understanding the most effective methods for teaching Wikipedia fundamentals to different groups (students, professionals, general public).  
  - Identifying challenges faced by first-time editors and refining training materials accordingly.

2. Community Engagement & Sustained Participation

  - Measuring participant retention rates and post-training editing activity.  
  - Assessing the role of mentorship and collaborative editing meetup in fostering long-term contributors.

3. Improving Local Content & Knowledge Representation

  - Evaluating the impact of human-led editing in enhancing Cebu or Visayan related Wikipedia articles, addressing prior concerns about automated content generation in Cebuano Wikipedia (as reported at https://www.abc.net.au/news/science/2025-04-15/wikipedia-cebuano-lsjbot-ai-article-generation-non-english/105123090).  
  - Identifying knowledge gaps and opportunities for future content initiatives tailored to Cebu or Visayas’ history, socio-economic profiles, culture, and public information needs.

4. Scalability & Transferable Methodologies

  - Exploring whether the three-phase model (assessment, training, mentoring) can be replicated in other Wikipedia outreach efforts in Central Philippines.  
  - Learning how to integrate community-driven editing programs with existing structures like WikiClub Cebu for long-term impact.

1. Best Practices- we discovered during this pilot that we can work around low turn out on day events by conducting pocket-edit a thons such as WikiNights and micro Wiki expeditions or photowalks. For as little as two hours, we can counter burn out and over expectation on volunteer commitments. We also solved the frequent editing meetups by holding small edit a thons remotely. Cebu is an urban city and people are busy so we adjust to their time and motion. And we found the solution. Small, regular pocket events.

First time editors are overwhelmed with article creation, editing Wikipedia but find it interesting to translate existing articles and upload media on Wikimedia Commons. We also discovered that Cebu is a Wikidata territory. Cebuanos think that structured knowledge through Wikidata is as important as increasing millions of articles in Wikipedia.

2. Sustainability- we developed and agreed upon small but regular meetups or independent and remote editing shall be adopted in our community. We can edit without seeing each other regularly or meeting in person because of our busy schedules. We also identified member's interests, what project will they focus on, and how will they impact others too. Knowledgeable editors now provide mentorship to new ones and succession has been set in place. Once a month, editors get to meet briefly in person to discuss Wikiclub matters moving forward. 3. Since the Cebuano Wikipedia has already grown big on a particular field od study, we wish to diversify our content to include, local culture. We also decided to pursue more Wikimedia Commons projects as well as Wikidata projects to represent Cebuano knowledge. Since the Visayan language is widely spoken not only in Cebu but also across Mindanao, we are thankful that community members outside Cebu will also be able to contribute to the growth of the Cebuano Wikipedia. Now that Cebuano Wikipedia is being populated by human editors, we are starting to embrace the ownership of this Wikipedia as we also explore its sister projects and applying them to other content forms. content initiatives and other needs. 4. For the three- phase model, we discivered that while it works in Wikiclub Cebu, it is also being implemented and replicated in other Wikiclubs in Mindanao such as Wikiclub Zamboanga, Wikiclub Davao and Iligan.

5. Did anything unexpected or surprising happen when implementing your activities? This can include both positive and negative situations. What did you learn from those experiences? (required)

We discovered that not all members or participants wanted to edit Wikipedia. Most of our members still prefer Wikimedia Commons and Wikidata. We learned that imposing tasks and hard selling volunteers on Wikipedia will not make them stay. But allowing them to freely explore, follow their passions and interests and allowing them to explore on their own would yield better results and greater impact. We also learned that partners are now laying down stricter policies when working with academic institutions, The compliance process seems a little bit harder nowadays than two years ago. But, nonetheless

6. What is your plan to share your project learnings and results with other community members? If you have already done it, describe how. (required)

We do quarterly check ins with other Wikiclubs to share learnings and best practices, also to share lessons and challenges. We realized working and communicating with other Wikiclubs undergoing the same journey as us makes the experience even better. During our monthly check ins with Wikiclub Cebu members, we usually discuss what works, what does not, what should we continue on moving forward and what will make our community grow. Perhaps not all topics at the same time, but at least one of these things once a month. We also advocate for respect for our community wishes. We ask them how to make volunteerism more fun.
