Inscriptions are one piece of written evidence on the history of a place or a region. For example, history of old kingdoms in a region in Indonesia are usually written in one or more inscriptions in their jurisdiction. Unfortunately, information regarding the inscriptions are not complete or are stub-class articles.

Through WikiPrasasti, we are trying to create and to improve articles related to inscriptions, particularly around West Java—Jakarta, Banten, and Bogor—to ensure complete and cited information about those inscriptions. This project is the continuation of Wiki Batu Basurek (WBB) project that previously has succeeded in improving inscription articles around Padang. Reflecting from the success, we are planning to expand the project to include inscriptions around West Java.

Our focus in WikiPrasasti is to improve the class of inscription articles from stub- to B-class articles. These improvements are important to ensure completeness and quality of information to free the knowledge regarding the inscriptions in Indonesian Wikipedia as one of the main and early reference of topics, including history and kingdom in Indonesia.

Strategy that we will use will continue from the previous WBB project with some customization reflecting from lesson learnt from previous project, such as:

  1. We will have a workshop to introduce the writing guide and the basics of editing in Indonesian Wikipedia. The workshop will be covered in the early stage of the project, where we will also choose a small group (consists of 4 to 5 people) to work on each inscription article. We aim to have at least 10 inscription articles that will be proposed to have a Good Article rating in Indonesian Wikipedia.
  2. Souvenirs (t-shirt and pen) will be given to participants that joined the program consistently. The t-shirt will be given to participants that join the editing gathering at least 5 times and minimum 10,000 editing bytes; while, the pen will be given to all participants that joined at least one meeting. These souvenirs are usually one of the driving forces in Indonesian contributors to join the program consistently.
  3. Decentralisation of photo contribution. In the WBB project, the picture was uploaded by one main organizer. This gave the project a bottleneck due to real-world activities of the organizer. To ensure smooth progress for the project, we aim to decentralize the photo contribution to Commons to each team instead of one person. The pictures that the main organizer takes will first be uploaded to a third-party service, such as Google Drive, which later can be accessed and uploaded by each team according to their inscription. Besides lowering the risk of bottleneck, this strategy will also improve participants' contributions and to introduce how to contribute to Wikimedia Commons.
  4. Main organizer (OwlyKnight and Hzu Hzu) will be tasked to prepare for reference and basic information regarding the inscriptions, its related kingdom, and its significance to improve the quality of the articles. The organizers will supervise the teams to ensure quality of the articles that they created or improved during the program.

In this project, WikiPrasasti team aim to improve the following articles:

Jakarta
  1. Tugu Inscription
  2. Sunda-Portugal Agreement Inscription
  3. Kebantenan Inscription
Banten
  1. Cidanghiang Inscription
  2. Batu Tulis Muruy Inscription
  3. Tapak Kaki Kiri Nyoreang Inscription
  4. Ki Amuk Canon
Bogor
  1. Ciauruteun Inscription
  2. Kebon Kopi I Inscription
  3. Kebon Kopi II Inscription
  4. Muara Cianten Inscription
  5. Jambu Inscription
  6. Batutulis Inscription
7. What are the planned activities? (required) Please provide a list of main activities. You can also add a link to the public page for your project where details about your project can be found. Alternatively, you can upload a timeline document. When the activities include partnerships, include details about your partners and planned partnerships.

The planned activities for the project are divided into 4 stages:

  1. Research: The two main organizers will do research on the planned inscriptions to gather main information and references. This is an important step to guide the participants on which reference that they can use and how, and to ensure consistent, high quality information for the participants and their contributions.
  2. Introduction and Workshop: This activity will be done to introduce participants regarding WikiPrasasti’s goal and writing guide. Besides, we will also provide workshops on how to contribute to Wikipedia, understanding article class in Wikipedia, and tips on reading references and writing encyclopedic articles. In this workshop, the participants will also be given a short survey to gather information regarding their understanding in contributing to the Wikimedia project, particularly Wikipedia.
  3. Team Contribution: After the workshop, each team will be given time once every month to gather and to contribute to the chosen Wikipedia article. In these activities, there will be organizers who will oversee participants’ contributions and help participants when they face challenges. At the end of this stage, we also aim to have a workshop to propose articles to Good Article in Indonesian Wikipedia.
  4. Evaluation and Reporting: At the end of the planned timeline, the organizer will do an evaluation on each of the teams’ performance and results and request for feedback and survey from the participants to understand their improvement in terms of understanding and skills in contributing to Wikimedia projects. The organizer will also ensure articles’ quality to be at least B-class standard by doing necessary revision to the articles. At the end, a report in Meta-Wiki and Diff will be made regarding the overall experience of the project.

The information regarding the project, including its goals, writing guides, sources, and report, will be placed in WikiPrasasti Meta-Wiki page. Below is the proposed timeline:

8. Describe your team. Please provide their roles, Wikimedia Usernames and other details. (required) Include more details of the team, including their roles, usernames, Wikimedia group, and whether they are salaried, volunteers, consultants/contractors, etc. Team members involved in the grant application need to be aware of their involvement in the project.
  • OwlyKnight: a contributor from Komunitas Wikimedia Jakarta, which is the current spokesperson for the community. He was actively contributing in many Indonesian-language Wikimedia projects, such as Wikipedia, Wikisource, and Wiktionary, and other multi-lingual projects, such as Wikidata and Wikimedia Commons. He has experience in working in Wikimedia-related projects, such as Wiki Batu Basurek, WikiMaèn, and WikiMaknyus. In this project, his responsibilities include planning the concept, developing writing guide, coordinating activities, overseeing research, and recruiting, organizing, and mentoring volunteer editors.
  • Hzu Hzu: a contributor from Komunitas Wikimedia Jakarta. In the Wiki Batu Basurek project, she was responsible as a Project Organizer (volunteer) & Administrative Lead. She was actively contributing in many Indonesian-language Wikimedia projects, such as Wikipedia, Wikisource, and Wiktionary, and other multi-lingual projects (Betawi & Minang). She has experience in working in Wikimedia-related projects, such as Wiki Batu Basurek, WikiMaèn, and WikiMaknyus. In this project, her responsibilities include planning the concept, coordinating activities, and recruiting, organizing, and mentoring volunteer editors.

Besides the core organizers, we will also recruit local guides to guide the team in taking pictures related to the inscriptions.

9. Who are the target participants and from which community? How will you engage participants before and during the activities? How will you follow up with participants after the activities? (required)

The target participants are contributors around West Java, including Greater Jakarta and Banten. Before the program begins, we will have a hybrid short workshop to introduce the program and writing / contribution guide to the participants. We will invite one organizer of Wiki Batu Basurek to present and to provide tips on improving articles from stub- to B-class articles in Indonesian Wikipedia. Then, we will split the participants into at least 10 groups, with each group having 3 to 4 participants.

To recruit new contributors, we will make an outreach and introduction workshop, especially in Lebak, Banten. We will aim to invite new contributors to this workshop, which will be used to introduce Wikipedia, to train new editors, and to encourage them to join WikiPrasasti and wiki community.

Each month, we will have a gathering activity to report on progress and challenges that each team faces, while also contributing to the article. Besides, each team may also have their own gathering activity to improve their chosen article. At each gathering activity, there will be organizers to check their contribution and to ensure articles’ quality are up to the standards.

We will follow up on each team online at least every two weeks to ensure their progress and quality. Besides, since the participants are around West Java, organizers may also join the gathering activities of some teams offline to provide better and live feedback while the team is working on their article.

After the articles are considered good enough—such that it has a B-class quality—we will have another workshop to introduce editors about the application process for Good Article in Indonesian Wikipedia. We will encourage each team to propose their article to become a Good Article in Indonesian Wikipedia.

You also need to align the activities with other projects happening in the planned area of implementation to ensure collaboration within the community.

We discussed the project with Komunitas Wikimedia Jakarta during their monthly meeting, that can be found here: Monthly Meeting — June 2026.

Besides, we also found that there is a similar project that will be run, which is Wiki Batu Basurek II. We have discussed with the team off-wiki and our goals compliment each other—Wiki Batu Basurek II continue on improving Wikipedia articles that related to inscriptions around Padang, while WikiPrasasti aim to improve Wikipedia articles about inscriptions around West Java, which can be expanded to Java and even Indonesia.

Besides, we also found that there is another project which documented inscriptions around West Java, which is ONCHI, but the project was not improving Wikipedia articles up to B-class articles. We will use the pictures of related inscriptions from that project and improve the Wikipedia articles. We have created a discussion on the project’s talk page.

Learning and metrics

[edit]
17. What do you hope to learn from your work in this project or proposal? (required)

The previous WBB project was to learn feasibility on projects that aim to improve article quality instead of quantity, which mostly include returning editors. The current project aims to expand the participants to new contributors. Therefore, we would like to understand challenges that the new contributors may face while improving Wikipedia articles and contributing to Wikidata and to Wikimedia Commons. We would like to know if the guidelines of each project, especially regarding article class, are understandable and applicable to the newcomers.

To ensure these learning points, we will provide a survey before and after the program. We would like to know what do the participants know more after they joined the program, what are their challenges, and how can we improve the learning curve in contributing to Wikimedia projects for newcomers.
