Grants:Programs/Wikimedia Community Fund/Rapid Fund/Wiki Afrodemics Mentorship Program 2025 (ID: 23644693)/Final Report
Application type: Standard application
Part 1: Project and impact
1. Describe the implemented activities and results achieved. Additionally, share which approaches were most effective in supporting you to achieve the results. (required)
1. Call for Applications: This is the first activity carried out, and we received 271 applications across 50 African countries. The publication was done on social media, especially LinkedIn, without any additional cost for ad running.
2. Participant Onboarding and Orientation: 20 participants were selected across 10 countries in both anglophone and francophone countries. A volunteer francophome trainer User:Chaido007 and a volunteer French to English translator were also onboarded for the five months journey. We limited our participants to 20 instead of 30 listed during the application because of the limited resources.
3. Mentorship Program: The participants were paired with different mentors who guided them during the three-month training. We also involved another experienced volunteer Dave Palfrey who introduced and trained the participants on the art and the act of Wikidata.
4. Guided Edit-a-thons: The participants participated in a guided edit-a-thon where they contributed to both Wikipedia and Wikidata. During this period, 280 articles were created on the English Wikipedia and 1, 170 articles were edited.
5. Peer Learning and Knowledge Exchange Sessions: During the project, there was peer learning sessions where we discovered that participants needed to be taught on how to documents their stories on the wikimedia diff platform. therefore, we carried out a training and 70 percents of the particpants now have diff stories on the diff platform.
6:Documentation and Reporting: For transparency, two diff bloposts were published during the project. The [ https://diff.wikimedia.org/2026/06/13/introducing-the-wiki-afrodemics-mentorship-project-cohort-1/ first one introduced] the public to our project and the activities that we have carried out while the last one docummented our achievements and area of improvement.
Most Effective Approaches
.1. Leveraging on social media, especially, Linkedin and different Wikimedia Whatsapp groups produced a great inter-countries participants. there is no need to run ads looking for participants.
2. Mentorship: One on one training proved to be very successful. With years of training over two thousand participants across different projects, this proven to be very succesful because the participants were taught according to their pace and the fear of failure was removed from theor heart. As it is documented in their success stories on Diff blogs. Some samples are: [ https://diff.wikimedia.org/2026/06/20/from-learner-to-contributor-my-experience-in-the-wiki-afrodemics-mentorship-programme/ Malona Adige], Adufe 262
Don'ts during the project 1. Before embarking on cross country campaign, especially the ones that involved data reimbursement or stipend. Check the cross-country money transfer choices available. During the project, I had trouble sending reimbursement to a participant in Namibia as all the mobile money transfer and PAPPS transfer did not include Namibia. The other option is to use FX transfer, but that added an additional 50 dollars to a data reimbursement of 30 dollars.
