This pilot project aims to enhance the quality of articles on significant 13th-century Hindu-Buddhist inscriptions in West Sumatra, which marked the beginning of the written historical era of the Minangkabau people, a prominent Southeast Asian ethnic group with a population of 6–8 million. The project seeks to address key shortcomings, including the lack of well-structured and comprehensive information, quality images, Wikidata entries, and credible references.
Key challenges include: 1. Missing Information: Existing entries lack sufficient research data and up-to-date quality images, limiting their effectiveness as educational resources. 2. Limited Scope: With at least 21 inscriptions in the region, documenting all requires substantial effort, so this project focuses on 12 selected inscriptions (to be found in 2 locations only). 3. Lack of Methodology: There is no established system for improving articles on inscriptions, hindering scalability for larger efforts.
This pilot project introduces a systematic approach to overcome these challenges through: 1. Literature Research: Collecting and analyzing data to enrich article content. 2. Acquisition of Updated Images: Providing visual documentation to address current gaps. 3. Well-Planned Editing Workshops: Engaging experienced editors while reaching out to interested new participants to join the initiative.
The scope is focused on nine inscriptions located in Tanah Datar District, West Sumatra, and two inscriptions and one abklatsch (paper rubbed copy) preserved at the National Museum and/or National Library in Jakarta. Challenges encountered during the project will be documented and analyzed to guide future efforts on a larger scale.
- 7. What are the planned activities? (required) Please provide a list of main activities. You can also add a link to the public page for your project where details about your project can be found. Alternatively, you can upload a timeline document. When the activities include partnerships, include details about your partners and planned partnerships.
The activity plan for the inscription project consists of several phases, carried out in two cities: Padang (Sumatra) and Jakarta (the capital of Indonesia). The first phase involves visiting the Adityawarman Inscription Site in Padang to photograph nine inscriptions. In Jakarta, the team will visit the National Library and/or National Museum to research and photograph two inscriptions and one abklatsch (paper copy of a lost inscription). These twelve inscriptions were selected for their accessibility to the core team, and the scope of this pilot project has been deliberately limited.
The second phase will involve ten workshops in each city to edit article topics with volunteer editors. The goal is to use the photographs obtained in the first phase to create new articles or improve existing ones, add Wikidata entries, and include more references. Volunteers will be recruited from the Wikimedia Padang and Jakarta communities and through online announcements on Minangkabau-language and Indonesian-language Wikipedia.
The core team will be responsible for scheduling appointments, preparing equipment, conducting visits, and gathering data from the National Museum and Library. Collaborative editing sessions with volunteers will enhance the articles using the collected materials. We aim to create articles about these inscriptions in at least three languages: Indonesian, Minangkabau, and English. Additional languages may be included based on the skills of volunteer editors. The final phase involves creating a dashboard, promoting the project results within Indonesian Wikimedia communities, and submitting a report to WMF (Wikimedia Foundation) as the grant provider.
This project builds upon earlier initiatives like ONCHI (Jakarta and surrounding areas) and WikiRantau (Sumatra), which successfully funded by Rapid Fund support. While those projects focused primarily on photography, this proposal addresses the gap in developing high-quality articles. We are selecting a limited number of inscriptions not covered by similar projects, and we aim to prioritize improving the articles' quality. Our strategy emphasizes extensive editing workshops and actively recruiting/improving committed volunteer editors to ensure impactful results.
- 8. Describe your team. Please provide their roles, Wikimedia Usernames and other details. (required) Include more details of the team, including their roles, usernames, Wikimedia group, and whether they are salaried, volunteers, consultants/contractors, etc. Team members involved in the grant application need to be aware of their involvement in the project.
Core team member: Wikimedia username: Naval Scene & Wikimedia username: Rahmat Denas
Naval Scene resides in Jakarta, the former capital and largest city of Indonesia. He is a co-founder and sysop of Wikipedia Minangkabau, as well as a long-time volunteer contributor. Since 2012, he has actively led and participated in various Wikimedia projects across Jakarta, Central Java, Padang, and other cities, serving both as a trainer and project member. With extensive experience in editing workshops and senior contributions across multiple Wikipedias—Indonesian, Minangkabau, Javanese, Sundanese, and Betawi—Naval Scene has the expertise to create well-structured, high-quality articles that align with Wikimedia standards. In this project, his responsibilities include concept planning, activity coordination, overseeing research, and recruiting, organizing, and mentoring volunteer editors.
Rahmat Denas resides in Padang, the provincial capital of West Sumatra, Indonesia. He is also a co-founder of Wikipedia Minangkabau and a sysop for both Wikipedia Minangkabau and Wikipedia Indonesia. A dedicated, long-time volunteer contributor, he has years of experience in editing workshops as both a trainer and participant. Rahmat Denas remains actively engaged in Wikimedia projects, particularly within Padang's Wikimedia communities, focusing on Minangkabau and Indonesian Wikipedias. With his sysop expertise and journalistic background, he ensures articles are well-researched and meet high-quality standards. For this project, Rahmat Denas is responsible for activity planning, photography, organizing workshops, and developing multilingual articles in collaboration with volunteer editors.
- 9. Who are the target participants and from which community? How will you engage participants before and during the activities? How will you follow up with participants after the activities? (required)
Target Participants and Communities: The editing sessions will target Wikimedia community members primarily from Padang, West Sumatra, and Jakarta, as well as online contributors to Indonesian Wikipedia and Minangkabau Wikipedia. These sessions aim to engage experienced volunteer editors with prior online editing experience, along with new participants invited to join the project.
Engagement Before and During the Activities: Prior to commencing activities, the pilot project will be announced at community meetings to raise awareness and encourage participation. Online announcements will also be made on the village pumps of Minangkabau Wikipedia and Indonesian Wikipedia. Throughout the project, updates and documentation will be shared via the communities' WhatsApp groups, ensuring consistent communication and active engagement with members.
Follow-Up with Participants After Activities: Following the completion of the pilot project, a comprehensive report will be prepared and distributed through the same communication channels. The report will include a link to the full documentation, providing participants and community members with access to review the project outcomes. Additionally, a dashboard will be created to showcase progress, key metrics, and project results in an accessible format, ensuring that the insights and achievements can be shared widely within the Wikimedia community and beyond.

Learning and metrics
[edit]- 17. What do you hope to learn from your work in this project or proposal? (required)
We hope to discover the best approaches for developing historical related articles, particularly those focused on inscriptions, archaeological sites, or ancient manuscripts, in a planned and systematic manner. We also want to explore whether a collaborative model involving multiple communities, each with its own core team members and well-structured planning, can collectively organize activities aimed at improving article quality.
We want to test this approach because, in writing competitions, participants often focus solely on increasing the byte count rather than creating well-structured, engaging, and readable articles that genuinely prioritize credible sources as supporting evidence. Our goal is to improve the development of these specialized articles in the future, as Indonesia is immensely rich in cultural heritage. Unfortunately, this wealth of heritage remains underdeveloped, unlike articles on topics such as famous figures, contemporary events, or popular items, which are extensively developed on Wikipedia.
