Grants:Programs/Wikimedia Community Fund/Rapid Fund/Wiki Batu Basurek (ID: 23088899)/Final Report
Application type: Standard application
Part 1: Project and impact
1. Describe the implemented activities and results achieved. Additionally, share which approaches were most effective in supporting you to achieve the results. (required)
The activities successfully conducted include preliminary research on inscription references, obtaining a permit from the relevant archaeological government body, project announcements to the Jakarta and Padang communities, planning and executing multiple editing meetups, activity documentation and social media promotion, expert editing and formatting, collection of financial records, and reporting.
We differentiated our approach for new users by conducting training in small groups to prevent them from feeling overwhelmed. This allowed us to provide dedicated guidance on editing techniques, ensuring they received proper attention and could contribute effectively. For experienced users and community members, editing was conducted in larger group meetups. Additionally, consultation and coordination were held both online and offline to address writing and technical challenges encountered during the project.
The general results are as follows:
- Total bytes added: 608,035 bytes
- Total citations added: 703 citations
- Total pictures added to articles: 164 pictures
- Total pictures uploaded to Commons: 143 pictures
- Total articles improved: 66 articles
- Total new articles created: 35 articles
- Total Wikivoyage articles: 4 articles
- Total languages edited: 6 languages (id, en, min, bew, sas, jax)
- Total Wikidata items created: 2 items
- Total Wikidata items improved: 12 items
The primary target articles were created in the Indonesian, English, and Minangkabau Wikipedias (all exceeding 15,000 bytes). Additional stub articles were created in these languages as well as in Betawi, Sasak, and Jambi dialects, and on Wikivoyage.

Part 2: Learning
4. In your application, you outlined some learning questions. What did you learn from these learning questions when you implemented your project? How do you hope to use this learnings in the future? You can recall these learning questions below. (required)
You can recall these learning questions below: We hope to discover the best approaches for developing historical related articles, particularly those focused on inscriptions, archaeological sites, or ancient manuscripts, in a planned and systematic manner. We also want to explore whether a collaborative model involving multiple communities, each with its own core team members and well-structured planning, can collectively organize activities aimed at improving article quality.
We want to test this approach because, in writing competitions, participants often focus solely on increasing the byte count rather than creating well-structured, engaging, and readable articles that genuinely prioritize credible sources as supporting evidence. Our goal is to improve the development of these specialized articles in the future, as Indonesia is immensely rich in cultural heritage. Unfortunately, this wealth of heritage remains underdeveloped, unlike articles on topics such as famous figures, contemporary events, or popular items, which are extensively developed on Wikipedia.
Through this project—which we hope is only the beginning of similar initiatives in the future—we have identified several key lessons:
1. Preliminary reference research is essential. Providing researchers and editors with pre-vetted references allows those unfamiliar with the topic to focus on content creation rather than spending time searching for appropriate sources.
2. Involvement of experienced expert editors is a necessity. Having a seasoned editor oversee each group ensures that both content quality and formatting meet Wikipedia’s rigorous standards.
3. A structured project framework is crucial. Based on our successes and challenges, we have developed a recommended set of project phases to improve article quality within the timeframe. These phases can be adopted and scaled by other communities looking to enhance content as a follow-up to photo-uploading projects on Commons.
5. Did anything unexpected or surprising happen when implementing your activities? This can include both positive and negative situations. What did you learn from those experiences? (required)
Yes, some unexpected events occurred. Toward the initial end of the project (November 2025), a disaster struck Sumatra, which shifted the priorities of several team members who were either directly affected or served as disaster relief volunteers; as a result, the final activities were delayed and the project timeline was extended. Additionally, one of our core members was accepted into a master's degree program at a university in another city and could no longer continue with the project until its completion. Lastly, the blocking of Wikipedia login access (auth.wikimedia.org) and Commons in February 2026 by the Ministry of Communication and Digital forced the cancellation of the final editing meetup by the Padang team, meaning some planned activities could not be realized.
We learned that even well-planned projects must have the flexibility to be extended when reasonable challenges arise. We are grateful that the Foundation was not overly rigid and was willing to accommodate the time constraints we faced.
6. What is your plan to share your project learnings and results with other community members? If you have already done it, describe how. (required)
Following the submission of this report and its final approval by the Foundation, we plan to present our findings at various Indonesian community gatherings, both online and offline. Furthermore, should the opportunity arise, we intend to share our results at the ESEAP regional conference (or other regional events) and Wikimania.
Part 3: Metrics
7. Wikimedia Metrics results. (required)
In your application, you set some Wikimedia targets in numbers (Wikimedia metrics). In this section, you will describe the achieved results and provide links to the tools used.
| Target | Results | Comments and tools used | |

8. Other Metrics results.
In your proposal, you could also set Other Metrics targets. Please describe the achieved results and provide links to the tools used if you set Other Metrics in your application.
| Other Metrics name | Metrics Description | Target | Result | Tools and comments |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Project Dashboard | A dashboard for presenting the finished project results to the community | 1 | 1 | We are still encountering difficulties in setting up the project dashboard, as several activities outside of this project were inadvertently recorded. We are continuing to refine it; however, since the reporting deadline has passed, we have included the current link in the meantime.
Two participants developed experimental tools to support this project, although they are still far from perfect: 1. Altilunium, developed by user:rtnf. It is designed to translate old archaeological texts from Dutch into English. Link: https://altilunium.github.io/LbL-TC/sample/1912-Q2/ 2. Inscription Facsimile Converter, developed by user:Affandy Murad. It is used to convert photos of inscriptions into black-and-white facsimiles for article illustrations. Link: https://affandymurad.github.io/fax/ We see great potential for these tools in the future, especially if we successfully scale this interest to other communities. Indonesia alone has more than 1,000 inscriptions, the majority of which are not yet documented on Wikipedia. The potential across Southeast and East Asia means the collective benefits would be enormous. |
9. Did you have any difficulties collecting data to measure your results? (required)
Yes
9.1. Please state what difficulties you had. How do you hope to overcome these challenges in the future? Do you have any recommendations for the Foundation to support you in addressing these challenges? (required)
We are still encountering difficulties in setting up the project dashboard, as several activities outside of this project were inadvertently recorded. We are continuing to refine it; however, since the reporting deadline has passed, we have included the current link in the meantime.
To overcome these challenges in the future, we believe it would be very helpful if the Foundation could provide dedicated staff support or a brief technical consultation as projects approach their final reporting stage. Having an expert to help refine and verify the dashboard would ensure data accuracy and significantly ease the reporting burden on project organizers.
Additionally, we would value specialized training regarding the specific capabilities and limitations of the current dashboard tools. Having a clearer understanding of these technical aspects early on would allow us to better align our project workflows and reporting matrices with the tool's functionality from the very beginning.
Part 4: Financial reporting
[edit]10. Please state the total amount spent in your local currency. (required)
30308696
11. Please state the total amount spent in US dollars. (required)
1854.88
12. Report the funds spent in the currency of your fund. (required)
Provide the link to the financial report https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1zS9dhAIeVPAcEXHKSsBUFsxlqA_ZBfVY/edit?gid=787125669#gid=787125669
12.2. If you have not already done so in your financial spending report, please provide information on changes in the budget in relation to your original proposal. (optional)
The following changes occurred: Mid-project, core organizer 2 (Rahmat Denas) was accepted to continue his studies at a university outside of Padang and relocated, thus he could no longer continue his involvement in this project. This resulted in core organizer 1 (Ichsan Mochtar) performing the expert editing for all articles created by both the Jakarta and Padang teams. Consequently, the per diem and mobile internet fees for core organizer 2 were provided only three times, while core organizer 1 received them five times.
Additionally, the funds used for F&B during article editing/creation in Jakarta exceeded the budget. This occurred because we realized mid-project that co-working space rent in Jakarta was not required (see explanation below re: unused amounts), so it served as compensation. The excess funds were used to involve a larger number of new users and community members beyond the project's original committed team members.
13. Do you have any unspent funds from the Fund?
Yes
13.1. Please list the amount and currency you did not use and explain why.
5.628.804 IDR. The budget surplus is due to the following: the co-working space rent for the editing workshop in Jakarta turns out it was not required, leaving those funds unused. Similarly, office supplies, receipt printing, and miscellaneous/unexpected fees have not been used as of the reporting being submitted. Furthermore, the blocking of Wikipedia login access (auth.wikimedia.org) and Commons in February 2026 by the Ministry of Communication and Digital cancelled the last editing meetup by the Padang team; therefore, the funds were also not used.
13.2. What are you planning to do with the underspent funds?
B. Propose to use them to partially or fully fund a new/future request with PO approval
13.3. Please provide details of hope to spend these funds.
Community members in Jakarta and Padang have expressed interest in replicating the Wiki Batu Basurek project during the second half of 2026. Subject to approval, the remaining funds will be allocated to inscription research and reference collection, as well as operational costs—including travel, food, and online/offline coordination meetings with the core teams from both cities. A formal budget reallocation proposal will be prepared accordingly.
14.1. Are you in compliance with the terms outlined in the fund agreement?
Yes
14.2. Are you in compliance with all applicable laws and regulations as outlined in the grant agreement?
Yes
14.3. Are you in compliance with provisions of the United States Internal Revenue Code (“Code”), and with relevant tax laws and regulations restricting the use of the Funds as outlined in the grant agreement? In summary, this is to confirm that the funds were used in alignment with the WMF mission and for charitable/nonprofit/educational purposes.
Yes
15. If you have additional recommendations or reflections that don’t fit into the above sections, please write them here. (optional)
