This project is a continuation of a previous pilot project focused on improving the quality of articles about important 13th century Hindu Buddhist inscriptions in West Sumatra. These inscriptions hold significant historical value as they mark the beginning of the written historical era of the Minangkabau people, as one of the major ethnic groups in Southeast Asia with a population of approximately 6 to 8 million. Through this follow up project, the efforts initiated in the earlier phase will be expanded and deepened to produce better, more accurate, and more publicly accessible knowledge documentation through the Wikimedia platform.
The primary change sought is an improvement in the quality of articles related to these inscriptions so that they meet higher standards in terms of content completeness, information structure, visual documentation quality, data connectivity through Wikidata, and the use of credible reference sources. In doing so, these articles are expected to serve not only as general information sources but also as learning resources and preliminary references for students, researchers, cultural communities, and the general public who wish to understand the early history of Minangkabau more deeply.
In its implementation, this project faces several key challenges. First, there remain significant deficiencies in existing articles, both in terms of data completeness, historical context, writing quality, and the availability of current documentary photographs suitable for use. Second, the number of inscriptions in this region is considerable, with at least 21 inscriptions in West Sumatra and 2 inscriptions held at the National Museum in Jakarta, totalling 23 inscriptions. In the previous project, Wiki Batu Basurek successfully completed 10 articles, and the remaining 13 articles will continue to be developed in this project, so that improvements to all articles can be realized. Accordingly, this project continues the development of 13 article objects and selects 8 objects located within Tanah Datar Regency, West Sumatra, for up to date documentation. Third, based on lessons learned from the pilot project, a more systematic working model and methodology is still needed so that efforts to improve inscription articles can be replicated more effectively at a broader scale in the future.
The scope of this project covers eight inscriptions located in Tanah Datar Regency, West Sumatra, namely: Prasasti Saruaso I, Prasasti Saruaso II, Prasasti Kuburajo I, Prasasti Kuburajo II, Prasasti Rambatan, Prasasti Bandar Bapahat, Prasasti Pariangan, and Prasasti Ombilin. Two inscriptions currently held at the National Museum and/or National Library in Jakarta, namely: Prasasti Padang Roco and Prasasti Amoghapasa. Two inscriptions in Pasaman Regency, namely: Prasasti Lubuk Layang and Prasasti Ganggo Hilia. And one inscription in Solok Regency, namely: Prasasti Paninggahan. The determination of this scope was made strategically so that available resources can be utilized optimally, while also enabling the achievement of tangible and measurable outcomes within the project implementation period.
To address these challenges, this project will be carried out through three main approaches. First, literature research to gather, review, and verify information from relevant sources in order to enrich and strengthen article content. Second, the procurement of current, high quality visual documentation to address the lack of photographs has long been one of the primary obstacles in presenting information. Third, the organization of targeted editing activities designed with clear direction, involving experienced editors while also opening space for participation by newly joined contributors who have an interest in preserving history and culture through Wikimedia projects.
As a follow up project, this initiative is oriented not only toward the end result of improved article quality, but also toward strengthening working approaches that can be applied again in the future. Therefore, the various challenges, obstacles, and lessons that arise during implementation will be documented systematically. This documentation will serve as the basis for evaluation as well as a reference for developing a more mature methodology, so that similar initiatives concerning other inscriptions in West Sumatra and other regions beyond West Sumatra can be carried out more effectively, purposefully, and sustainably.

The main project activities are planned in several stages. The first stage is project preparation and coordination, which includes drafting a work plan, scheduling site visits, preparing documentation equipment, and arranging access to locations and institutions that fall within the project scope. At this stage, the core team from the Wikimedia Community Volunteers of Padang will also establish a priority list of objects and articles to be developed.
The second stage is literature research and data collection, which involves searching, gathering, and reviewing relevant sources such as books, journals, collection catalogues, research reports, and other references related to the target inscriptions. This activity is carried out to enrich article content, strengthen historical context, and ensure the use of credible sources.
The third stage is field visual documentation or documentation updating. In this stage, the team will conduct visits to inscription sites that are prioritized under this Wiki Batu Basurek 2.0 initiative. As a continuation of the previous project, Wiki Batu Basurek, this second phase has 13 priority inscriptions for development, however not all 13 will undergo documentation. Eight inscriptions will receive updated documentation, namely: Prasasti Saruaso I, Prasasti Saruaso II, Prasasti Kuburajo I, Prasasti Kuburajo II, Prasasti Rambatan, Prasasti Bandar Bapahat, Prasasti Pariangan, and Prasasti Ombilin. Documentation of these inscriptions is still incomplete and in some cases entirely absent from Wikimedia Commons. Meanwhile, the remaining 5 inscriptions, namely Prasasti Padang Roco, Prasasti Amoghapasa, Prasasti Paninggahan, Prasasti Lubuk Layang, and Prasasti Ganggo Hilia, already have complete photographs available on Wikimedia Commons.
The 8 inscriptions to be documented are spread across Tanah Datar Regency, West Sumatra. The following are estimated distances from each inscription site to the center of Batusangkar, the regency capital. Prasasti Saruaso I is located near the center, approximately 1 km away. Prasasti Saruaso II is located in Tanjung Emas District, approximately 9 km from the regency capital. Prasasti Bandar Bapahat is approximately 6 km from the regency capital. Prasasti Kuburajo I and Kuburajo II are situated within the same inscription complex, approximately 4 km from the regency capital. Prasasti Rambatan is approximately 8 km from the regency capital. Prasasti Pariangan is approximately 15 km from the regency capital, and Prasasti Ombilin is approximately 25 km from the regency capital.
The documentation of all these inscriptions is expected to produce a minimum of 32 photographs to be uploaded to Wikimedia Commons. This documentation also aims to generate current, high quality photographs that can be used to supplement articles on Wikipedia and serve as an inscription photo collection on Wikimedia Commons available for use across various other projects.
Following the documentation stage, the project will carry out a Wikilatih training activity for the Wikimedia Community of Padang, targeting 15 to 20 participants, to be held in the city of Padang. This activity is designed to strengthen community members' capacity to edit articles more thoroughly, improve reference quality, manage structured data in Wikidata, and make optimal use of visual documentation results in developing cultural heritage themed articles. Through this training, the project focuses not only on content outcomes but also on building community capacity so that members are able to continue similar efforts more independently and sustainably.
This Wikilatih activity will be guided and trained directly by Naval Scene, who is the pioneer and the core organizer for the previous Wiki Batu Basurek project. That project is also referred to as a pilot project for an initiative aimed at producing quality articles on Wikipedia while involving local community members and volunteers. With his direct presence, he will be able to provide clear and detailed explanations and instructions to participants, who in turn can be guided hands-on in how to produce quality Wikipedia articles. Most importantly, his long years of contribution to Wikipedia and Wikimedia projects can serve as a source of motivation for participants, particularly community members and volunteers, to continue contributing to Wikipedia and other Wikimedia projects.
The next stage is media processing and uploading to Wikimedia Commons, alongside the development and editing of the 13 target articles. All documentation results will be selected, described, properly categorised, and uploaded to Wikimedia Commons for open use. Based on the outcomes of research, documentation, and capacity building through Wikilatih, the Wikimedia Community of Padang will carry out editing in stages to improve article structure, add important information, strengthen references, incorporate visual documentation, and complete any remaining gaps in content. In addition to article development on Wikipedia, this project will also cover the completion and improvement of related data on Wikidata so that information on each inscription is better connected and usable across Wikimedia projects.
The final stage is documentation of results and project reporting. Project achievements will be summarised through a dashboard or public project page, promoted within the Wikimedia community in Indonesia, and reported to the Wikimedia Foundation as the grant provider. Furthermore, the challenges, lessons learned, and working approaches gained throughout implementation will be documented as a foundation for developing more systematic working methods in similar activities in the future.
On the whole, this project not only continues the results of the previous pilot project but also strengthens the quality and breadth of those results through a clearer focus, namely the completion and improvement of 13 articles by the Wikimedia Community of Padang, accompanied by community capacity building through Wikilatih. With this approach, the project is expected to make a real contribution to the preservation, documentation, and dissemination of knowledge about inscriptions of significant importance to the early history of the Minangkabau people.

Adhmi is based in Batusangkar, Tanah Datar Regency, West Sumatra, Indonesia. He is an active contributor and volunteer since 2018 within the Wikimedia Community of Padang. He has been actively involved in running community programs from the very beginning of the Wikimedia Community of Padang's formation up to the present. He has participated in various Wikimedia programs across Indonesia, and has also attended the ESEAP Strategy Summit 2023 and Wikimania 2023 in Singapore, where he received a full travel scholarship. With extensive experience in editing workshops and advanced level contributions across Indonesian and Minangkabau language Wikipedias, Adhmi possesses the expertise to produce well structured, high quality articles that meet Wikimedia standards. In this project, his responsibilities include concept planning, activity coordination, research oversight, as well as recruiting, organizing, and mentoring volunteer editors.
Andri Kesenja 01 is based in Batusangkar, Tanah Datar Regency, West Sumatra, Indonesia. He is a contributor and volunteer actively engaged with the Wikimedia Community of Padang. As a contributor and volunteer, he has several years of experience creating and editing articles on Wikipedia through the Book Grant program. He is also active in various Wikimedia Community of Padang activities, including the Dana Wiki program, Wikilatih program, community meetups, Wikidialek, and community meetings. In addition, he is active as a Cultural Practitioner in West Sumatra Province, playing an active role in assisting local governments in drafting and updating the Regional Cultural Framework Document (Pokok Pikiran Kebudayaan Daerah or PPKD). Through this work, he has contributed to data collection, information verification, narrative drafting, and cultural potential mapping as the basis for sustainable cultural development planning. His active experience within the community, combined with the background of his other activities, will greatly support the course of this project. In this project, Andri Kesenja 01 is responsible for activity planning, photography, organizing workshops and Wikilatih sessions, as well as developing multilingual articles together with volunteer editors.

The target participants for this activity are members of the Wikimedia Community of Padang, West Sumatra, who have already contributed to the Indonesian Wikipedia and Minangkabau Wikipedia. This activity is intended for experienced volunteer editors, while also opening space for new participants who are interested in learning about and developing Wikipedia articles more deeply.
Before and during the activity, participants will be engaged through announcements at community meetings as well as online announcements on the Community's Social Media channels. Throughout the project, updates and activity documentation will be shared periodically through the community's WhatsApp group to maintain communication and participant engagement.
After the activity concludes, the team will share a final report through the same communication channels. The report will be accompanied by a link to complete documentation and a project dashboard displaying the progress, achievements, and key outcomes of the project, so that it can be accessed and reviewed by participants as well as the broader Wikimedia community.

We hope to learn the best approaches for developing history-themed articles, particularly those related to inscriptions, archaeological sites, and ancient manuscripts, in a more planned and systematic manner. In addition, we also wish to understand the extent to which a collaborative model among fellow community volunteers, supported by a solid core team and sound planning, can work effectively to improve article quality.
Through this project, we aim to test an approach that places greater emphasis on article quality rather than simply increasing byte count, as is often the case in writing competitions. The expectation is that the articles produced will be better structured, more engaging to read, and supported by credible sources. The lessons learned from this project are hoped to serve as a foundation for the development of higher-quality Indonesian cultural heritage articles in the future.
