Grants:Programs/Wikimedia Community Fund/Rapid Fund/Wiki For Minorities in Uganda (ID: 23751644)/Final Report
Application type: Standard application
Part 1: Project and impact
1. Describe the implemented activities and results achieved. Additionally, share which approaches were most effective in supporting you to achieve the results. (required)
Wiki for Minorities in Uganda was implemented through a physical training where participants were introduced to training on Wikipedia projects that include English Wikipedia, Wikidata, Wikimedia Commons, Runyankore Wikipedia (Incubator), and Luganda Wikipedia. The projects had live demonstrations to help participants have a hands-on experience and ensure their editing is of high quality. Live demonstration trainings help participants to know what to do while editing on their own. This was successful, and we encouraged them to follow-up incase thay needed more support. Throughout the overall project, we achieved creating 33 English Wikipedia articles, 105 Wikidata entries, 187 Wikimedia Commons uploads, 3 Luganda Wikipedia articles translated, and 6 Runyankore Wikipedia articles translated, including 17 improved English Wikipedia articles.
2. Documentation of your impact. Please use space below to share links that help tell your story, impact, and evaluation. (required)

Additionally, share the materials and resources that you used in the implementation of your project. (required)
For example:
- Training materials and guides
- Presentations and slides
- Work processes and plans
- Any other materials your team has created or adapted and can be shared with others
The training was done through practical live demonstrations on the existing Wikimedia Projects. We demonstrated live so that participants can grasp and follow directly from their laptops to create articles on English Wikipedia, Luganda Wikipedia and upload photoes on Wikimedia Commons. This saved time and allowed for more interactions and questions were answered as the specific projects were being presented.

Part 2: Learning
4. In your application, you outlined some learning questions. What did you learn from these learning questions when you implemented your project? How do you hope to use this learnings in the future? You can recall these learning questions below. (required)
You can recall these learning questions below: How best can University students meaningfully contribute to sustainably support Wikimedia movement goals? Once introduced, will students use Wikipedia to develop/improve more content within their local communities? How best can teachers play their role in sustaining and managing Wiki Clubs in their respective Universities? What strategies can be employed to ensure students have continuous editing on Wikipedia and its sister projects?
First, Makerere University accepted the training to be conducted, but later they called us for a meeting to discuss training details, and their key concern was the definition of Minorities. We explained this, but later, the university leadership said they would have another training that would be on the same day, and we had to hire a hotel to use as a venue to train the participants.
In the question we raised, we intended to train both students and their lecturers but due to a collusion in programming which was unpredicted, we only trained the students and one of our goal is that in the next training, we have a better planning and timeframe to ensure lectureres are part of this training to allow for better incorperation of wikimedia projects specifically Wikipedia both English and Luganda so that their research and courseworks are authentic but also empowering the University community to contribute toward building such projects.
The students trained have joined the Wikimedia Uganda Community and will be mentored effectively. Unfortunately, at the time we had the training, they were almost sitting for exams, and they prioritized their exams first and later transitioned to doing internships, which affected their contributions, but we engaged the COT and Wikimedia Community User Group members to fill the gap that was totally unforeseen which led to the success of the project.
5. Did anything unexpected or surprising happen when implementing your activities? This can include both positive and negative situations. What did you learn from those experiences? (required)
The project encountered no major operational obstacles; however, participant engagement was temporarily impacted when Makerere University students began their examination schedule and subsequently transitioned to field internships. This academic calendar overlap briefly reduced student availability during the post-workshop campaign period.
What we learned.
1. Changing the campaign timeframe to the last quarter of the year to allow effective participation in documenting the project outcomes. 2. Opening up the Campaign to Community members and not only focusing on the student communities from the Universities selected to ensure we have a mix of approaches to having participants contribute, but also have experienced editors support new members and mentor them in joining and contributing to Wikimedia projects.
3. Having a better approach which will include engaging stakeholders of minority communities like, for example, the LGBTQ+ Community leaders in Uganda, Disability Unions in Uganda, among others, to ensure we have a concrete approach in collaboration to build better content and improve learning for the project and its outcome.
6. What is your plan to share your project learnings and results with other community members? If you have already done it, describe how. (required)
Our plan is to use social media and tag the Wikimedia Community Uganda User Group for community members to follow the work we have done and success stories. Currently, the Wikimedia Community Uganda User Group is preparing to host its Annual General Meeting, and the COT Team is planning to share the learnings and achievements of this project with community members. Later in the year, we will also have a community Baraza, and we will use this platform to share the work and achievements of the project, as well as onboard more community members to the project as we plan and strategize on building synergies to improve minority content and reduce this gap in the Wikimedia project.
Part 3: Metrics
