6. What is the change you are trying to bring? What are the main challenges or problems you are trying to solve? Describe this change or challenges, as well as main approaches to achieve it. (required)

This pre-university approach builds on the successful model of YaliChecks to enhance media literacy and digital skills among young people, particularly girls, through sustained edit-a-thons and capacity-building activities. By engaging students from Junior and Senior High Schools, universities, and corporate institutions, we aim to celebrate youth participation during International Youth Day and empower women during International Women’s Week and International Day of the Girl Child. This edition aims to address critical challenges such as the limited access to digital skills in rural communities and the underrepresentation of women in historical, cultural, and digital archives. These challenges perpetuate cycles of exclusion and missed opportunities for marginalized groups, particularly young girls, who are often left behind in the digital age. By focusing on these gaps, the project seeks to create a more inclusive digital landscape, one where girls from rural communities can access the tools and skills they need to thrive in an increasingly digital world. Beyond digital literacy, this initiative strives to empower these girls with a comprehensive set of skills that will enable them to become informed leaders, advocates, and agents of change. The project will equip them with critical research and analytical skills, allowing them to engage with and contribute to discussions on important issues such as gender equality, cultural preservation, and misinformation. These capabilities will help them not only contribute to digital archives but also challenge stereotypes and misrepresentations of women in history. Through training in digital content creation and social media, participants will be able to amplify their voices, share their stories, and showcase their contributions to society. This visibility will not only help break down barriers for women in digital spaces but also inspire others to follow their lead. The project will also foster collaboration and networking, connecting these young girls with mentors and peers from diverse backgrounds, thereby expanding their opportunities for growth and learning. Moreover, the initiative will help cultivate leadership, public speaking, and communication skills, empowering these young girls to advocate for themselves and their communities. By developing emotional intelligence and resilience, they will be better equipped to overcome challenges, build positive relationships, and lead with confidence in both their personal and professional lives. If implemented, this proposal will bring about a profound and lasting impact. It will empower young girls to navigate the digital world confidently, ensuring they have the skills and opportunities to participate fully in society. The project will create a ripple effect, positively affecting not only the girls themselves but also their communities, where they will inspire future generations to continue breaking barriers and contributing to a more equitable and inclusive world.

7. What are the planned activities? (required) Please provide a list of main activities. You can also add a link to the public page for your project where details about your project can be found. Alternatively, you can upload a timeline document. When the activities include partnerships, include details about your partners and planned partnerships.

The project will include workshops focused on digital skills, research, and WikiData editing, alongside competitions like WikiData and Feminism & Folklore to practically apply the skills learned. Workshop will focus on International Women’s Week and International Youth Day, supported by virtual check-ins to provide ongoing guidance. New dimensions, such as contributions to Wikisource, wikibooks and uploading missing images of women to Wikimedia Commons linked to WikiData items, will expand the scope of activities. The project will also foster collaborations with Wikimedia Ghana, Women in Red, and Feminism & Folklore to strengthen its community impact while ensuring continued learning and capacity building for past participants. The strategy involves leveraging partnerships with media organizations, banks, and academic institutions to widen participation and mentorship and ensure visibility and recognition of contributions through local awards for Feminism and Folklore and WikiData campaigns. There will be a writing contest to test their skills on the platform prior to the end of all training and edit a thons. Thus, organising 3 workshops, Virtual check-ins/ meetings and 2 competitions on wikidata and Feminism and Folklore for the editors. Edits will be tracked using a dashboard

Learning and metrics

[edit]
17. What do you hope to learn from your work in this project or proposal? (required)

Through this project, we hope to learn the following: Have we successfully bridged the digital skills gap for young girls in rural areas? We aim to assess the extent to which participants have gained digital literacy and research skills, particularly in WikiData and Wikisource, and how these skills have empowered them in their education and communities. Has the initiative effectively contributed to closing the gender gap in digital and cultural archives? We will measure the increase in women-focused content in WikiData and Wikisource, along with the participation of young girls in creating and editing content related to gender, history, and culture. What impact has the mentorship and collaborative partnerships had on the skills development of participants? We will analyze how mentorship from facilitators, including trainers from various regions, has influenced the participants' growth and leadership development. How have the girls applied their digital skills in their communities or academic pursuits? We will gather feedback to understand how the skills learned have been implemented in real-world scenarios and academic projects, and whether participants feel more confident in taking on leadership roles.
