Wiki Loves Africa

6. What is the change you are trying to bring? What are the main challenges or problems you are trying to solve? Describe this change or challenges, as well as main approaches to achieve it. (required)

We wish to promote the culture, biodiversity, and local stories of the Republic of Burundi through the documentation and sharing of free content on Wikimedia. The goal is to improve the representation of Africa in digital resources and encourage citizen participation in content creation.

Burundi is a country where Kirundi is the main language, spoken by the majority of the population. However, French and English are also official languages, and Swahili is used in certain contexts. This linguistic diversity poses a challenge for creating content accessible to all. However, there are several approaches to overcome these obstacles and promote the creation and sharing of quality content.

Main Challenges to Address

1.Many citizens are not aware of Wikimedia projects and their importance.

2.In some regions, internet access is difficult, which limits participation.

3.There may be a lack of training for potential contributors on how to create and share quality content.

4.The linguistic diversity of Burundi complicates the creation of content accessible to all.

Approaches to Achieve This

1.Organize information sessions to raise awareness about Wikimedia projects and their positive impact. These sessions can help demystify the platforms and encourage active participation.

2.Set up training sessions to teach participants how to contribute effectively. These trainings can cover various aspects such as photography, writing, research, and content editing. By providing practical skills, participants will be better equipped to create high-quality content.

3.Work in partnership with schools, universities, and NGOs to reach a broader and more diverse audience. These collaborations can include workshops, seminars, and joint projects that encourage the participation of young people and local communities.

4.Use social media to promote the event and contributions. Social platforms are an excellent way to attract attention, share successes, and encourage ongoing participation. By creating a dynamic online presence, it is possible to mobilize a larger and more engaged community.

7. What are the planned activities? (required) Please provide a list of main activities. You can also add a link to the public page for your project where details about your project can be found. Alternatively, you can upload a timeline document. When the activities include partnerships, include details about your partners and planned partnerships.

Wikijambo in Burundi will focus on photo and video activities under the theme "From Farm to Plate" for Wiki Loves Africa. The images will be uploaded to Wikimedia Commons and will be used to showcase Burundian cuisine, illustrate articles related to Burundi and Africa on Wikipedia and its related projects, as well as other Wiki categories. An exhibition of the best images will be organized to encourage participants and reward the best photos and videos.

Trainings:

  • Mobile phone photography, cameras, quality photos, encyclopedic videos, etc.

Webinars:

  • Basics of Wikimedia Commons, introduction to categories, etc.

Workshop:

  • Image editing tools, video editing, sound editing, etc.

Photowalk:

  • Visit places to take photos related to the theme "From Farm to Plate."

8. Describe your team. Please provide their roles, Wikimedia Usernames and other details. (required) Include more details of the team, including their roles, usernames, Wikimedia group, and whether they are salaried, volunteers, consultants/contractors, etc. Team members involved in the grant application need to be aware of their involvement in the project.

PatrickFound: Project Manager. The project manager will oversee all activities related to the development and implementation of the project. He will facilitate access to targeted areas, ensure compliance with grant commitments, and provide reports on the progress and status of the campaign.

Rosiness220: Co-organizer, responsible for partnerships. Her mission is to mobilize people around the project and jointly train those who wish to participate in the campaign.

Africain777: Design and communication.

9. Who are the target participants and from which community? How will you engage participants before and during the activities? How will you follow up with participants after the activities? (required)

I. Target Participants and Communities

II. Strategies to Engage Participants Before and During Activities

Before the Activities:

1. Awareness and Mobilization:

  - Organize communication campaigns on social media (Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp) and through traditional media (radio, newspapers).
  - Collaborate with universities, training centers, and photography associations to recruit participants.
  - Disseminate information at the sites where the outings will take place.

2. Training and Preparation:

  - Organize introductory workshops on Wikimedia Commons, photography, and the specific requirements of the contest.
  - Set up online sessions for participants who are geographically distant.

During the Activities:

1. Collaborative Photo Outings:

  - Plan thematic visits with mixed groups (photographers, community members) to encourage interactions and co-creation.
  - Have photography experts present to guide participants in capturing high-quality images.

2. Engagement on Social Media:

  - Share participants' experiences in real-time through posts and live videos.

3. Personalized Support:

  - Provide mentoring by experienced mentors to resolve technical issues related to uploading or editing.

III. Follow-up with Participants After the Activities

Recognition and Encouragement:

1. Award Certificates of Participation to value the engagement of all participants.

  - Distribute symbolic souvenirs to reinforce the sense of belonging to the Wikimedia community.

2. Integration into the Local Wikimedia Community:

  - Invite participants to join regular training and contribution sessions organized by Wikimedians in Burundi.
  - Create a dedicated WhatsApp group to exchange future opportunities and ensure follow-up on acquired skills.

3. Sharing Results:

  - Communicate the finalist contributions and winners on online platforms (Wikimedia sites, social media).
  - Organize community feedback sessions to present the impacts of the contest.

This inclusive and structured approach aims to create an enriching experience for participants while strengthening the Wikimedia community in Burundi and promoting the production of relevant and quality visual content.

Learning and metrics

[edit]
17. What do you hope to learn from your work in this project or proposal? (required)

Thanks to this project, we aim to address the following learning questions:

1. How can the Wiki Loves Africa contest enhance the recognition and appreciation of Burundi's cultural and natural heritage among participants and the public? 2. What specific obstacles do local communities face in contributing to Wikimedia projects, and what effective solutions can we propose? 3. What are the best methods to raise awareness among local populations, especially youth and underrepresented groups, about the importance of documenting their heritage? 4. What concrete impact can increased participation in the contest have on enriching Wikimedia projects concerning Burundi?

Expected results:

  • Discovery of Burundian heritage: Highlight the richness and diversity of Burundi through the images and other content created during the project.
  • Understanding local dynamics: Study local participation dynamics to adjust our future approaches.
  • Impact on national pride: Measure the impact of the contest on the sense of national pride and community among participants.
  • Accessibility and inclusion: Find ways to make Wikimedia platforms more accessible and inclusive.

These learnings will guide our future efforts to strengthen African contributions to Wikimedia and ensure a lasting impact of our initiatives.
