Our goal is to showcase the vibrant agricultural heritage, food production methods, and culinary customs of Taraba State on Wikimedia projects by capturing and sharing photographs that reflect this year’s Wiki Loves Africa theme, "Farm to Plate." This theme underscores the path of food from its source to plate, presenting an excellent opportunity to document Taraba State’s varied farming practices, local food preparation methods, and cultural dining customs.
Sadly, Taraba State is still underrepresented on Wikimedia projects, with only a limited number of images or multimedia content highlighting its agricultural richness, food systems, and associated cultural treasures. This lack of visibility hinders global appreciation for the state's contributions to Nigeria’s agricultural and cultural scene.
To tackle this issue, we propose to:
- Host a thematic photowalk: We will gather photographers to capture high-quality images of Taraba State's agricultural practices, markets, food preparation techniques, traditional dishes, and dining customs. Key areas of focus will include farming on the Mambilla Plateau, local crops such as tea and coffee, traditional food processing, and bustling markets.
- Educate participants: We will offer training on how to upload, classify, and license images on Wikimedia Commons under open licenses to ensure worldwide accessibility.
- Incorporate images into Wikimedia projects: These photographs will enrich Wikipedia articles, Wikidata entries, and Wikivoyage pages concerning Taraba State. The content will particularly emphasize how food is cultivated, processed, and consumed, illustrating the Farm to Plate journey in a local context.
- Connect with the community: We will work alongside local farmers, market vendors, cooks, and food artisans to represent their practices authentically and promote awareness of the advantages of sharing knowledge openly through Wikimedia Projects.
Some significant locations and subjects we will document include:
Farming activities at Gashaka Gumti National Park and the Mambilla Plateau (noteworthy for tea and coffee plantations).
Agricultural infrastructure such as the Kashimbila Hydroelectric Power Station and its influence on farming communities.
Food markets and dining culture in towns like Gembu, Wukari, and Muri.
Traditional food processing methods and local dishes distinctive to Taraba State.
- 7. What are the planned activities? (required) Please provide a list of main activities. You can also add a link to the public page for your project where details about your project can be found. Alternatively, you can upload a timeline document. When the activities include partnerships, include details about your partners and planned partnerships.
The workshop, which involves training the participants to take high-quality photos that capture the target locations of Taraba State, is set to take one day. This is followed by four photowalk days where the team will tour selected sites across the state to capture the landscapes, cultural sites, people, and the architectural heritage of the places. The project intends to engage the services of two accomplished photographers from Jalingo, Taraba State's capital, to lead the process and take quality pictures.
A one-day edit-a-thon and upload session will follow after the said photo walks. In the session, participants will be trained on how to upload pictures on Wikimedia Commons, categorize them appropriately, and integrate them into other Wikimedia projects, especially Wikipedia, Wikidata, and Wikivoyage. This way, participants can be empowered to contribute actively within the Wikimedia movement, and the documented materials are used to enrich Wikimedia projects.
The partnerships with local cultural and tourism bodies will ensure access to key locations and align the project to the needs within the community. A document for timeline tracking, combined with a public project page, will be developed to keep track of its progress and share updates with stakeholders.
- 8. Describe your team. Please provide their roles, Wikimedia Usernames and other details. (required) Include more details of the team, including their roles, usernames, Wikimedia group, and whether they are salaried, volunteers, consultants/contractors, etc. Team members involved in the grant application need to be aware of their involvement in the project.
The project group consists of committed, experienced Wikimedia contributors as well as professional photographers in order to guarantee the achievement of this project.
- Mahuta is the project leader and a seasoned Wikimedian, who has been organising and supporting Wikimedia projects since 2021. He will coordinate the planning, deputized management and execution of the project with the aim that person of first instance, to terms of goals, and in terms of time, all objectives shall be carried out successfully.
- Yahuzaishat is an experienced Wikimedian from Taraba State. His task is to select important sites for the documentation and to involve people of the local community. By dint of his extensive knowledge of the territory and of its cultural heritage, his role in the success of the project is fundamental.
- Gwanki is a very seasoned Wikimedian with a long and rich background in the implementation of Wikimedia projects and the training of participants. His task is to act as a moderator and upload trainer. Gwanki will teach participants how to upload images to Wikimedia Commons and how to use them on the other Wikimedia projects, including Wikipedia, Wikidata, and Wikivoyage. His involvement is very important that the participants learn the necessary skills to conduct themselves in a useful manner.
- The group also consists of two professional photographers, both from Jalingo, the state capital of Taraba State. They will offer interactive training to participants on how to take high-quality pictures and will actively go on the photowalks. Through their knowledge, the images will conform to the necessary Wikimedia Commons standards.
This team is a mix of volunteers and contractors. Mahuta, Yahuzaishat, and Gwanki are volunteering their labour and expertise and photographers will be contracted to provide photographic services. All team members have complete knowledge of their tasks and duties, which will be listed on Meta-Wiki for openness and responsibility).
- 9. Who are the target participants and from which community? How will you engage participants before and during the activities? How will you follow up with participants after the activities? (required)
The target participants for this project are residents of Taraba State, especially people from Jalingo, the capital of Taraba State, and will focus on the youth, photographers, and cultural enthusiasts, as well as Wikimedia contributors from the local community. Participants will include both experienced and new contributors who have an interest in photography, cultural documentation, and contributing to Wikimedia projects.
Pre-activity outreach to participants will be done via social media. Announcement of the project and its benefits, invitations to take part therein. Partnership engagements with local culture and tourism organizations will be instrumental in mobilizing persons from across the state. An induction session will also be in place to orient them on the essence of this project.
The participants will be engaged in the Photowalks, workshop, and edit-a-thon sessions. Participants will receive hands-on training and mentorship from experienced photographers and Wikimedia contributors to effectively learn and contribute. We will also provide necessary resources, like training materials, to enhance their experience.
A WhatsApp group for follow-up after the activities will help keep the participants engaged with regular updates, extra training opportunities, and reminders of further contributions to Wikimedia projects. This will also encourage them to be continuously active within the Wikimedia community through participating in successive projects, giving their valuable feedback, and mentoring other individuals within their networks. Monitoring their contributions within the Wikimedia projects will ensure sustained engagement and growth.

Learning and metrics
[edit]- 17. What do you hope to learn from your work in this project or proposal? (required)
This project is targeting learning on how one can possibly create and develop the base point culture, history, and environmental investments of Taraba on projects to Wikimedia, and how effective engagement can happen with the local communities, sustainable partnerships develop with cultural and tourism players, and empower participants to contribute meaningfully to Wikimedia Projects.
Learning best practices on doing photowalks, trainings, and edit-a-thons in regions that remain largely unreported-for example, in regions with little or no Wikimedia activity-would also help. Quality and usage assessment of the uploaded images would help improve understanding regarding how to integrate visual content across the platforms and increase the visibility of local heritage on global perception.
