6. What is the change you are trying to bring? What are the main challenges or problems you are trying to solve? Describe this change or challenges, as well as main approaches to achieve it. (required)

Libya and Morocco are renowned for their olive cultivation, high-quality dates, medicinal plants, and unique agricultural practices adapted to their desert environment. Additionally, the countries have diverse methods of animal husbandry and the promotion of animal, plant, and fishery resources. However, these fields suffer from a significant lack of documentation in Wikimedia projects, particularly in terms of media and information derived from experts and individuals interested in documenting these domains in Libya and Morocco. Main Challenges: 1. Limited awareness of the importance of documenting Libya and Morocco's agriculture and natural resources on platforms like Wikimedia Commons. 2. A shortage of local contributors capable of producing high-quality media content (photos, videos, audio recordings) about these fields. 3. A lack of interest among researchers in academic and scientific institutions in documenting Libya and Morocco’s agricultural and environmental diversity on Wikimedia platforms. 4. Weak connections between free knowledge communities, local farmers, and producers, which hinders the collection and availability of content on Wikimedia platforms.

Approaches to Achieve the Change: 1. Actively participating in the Wiki Loves Africa “from farm to plate” campaign to highlight Libya and Morocco’s agricultural narrative and strengthen its presence on Wikimedia projects by organizing training activities focused on media documentation. 2. Raising awareness about the importance of visual and audio documentation through Wikimedia Commons, by conducting workshops for farmers, experts, and local enthusiasts. 3. Inviting academics and organizations focusing on agriculture and the environment to encourage researchers to document these fields, while providing the necessary tools for this purpose. 4. Developing a visual and written database on Wikimedia Commons that showcases Libya and Morocco’s agricultural diversity, with a particular focus on desert farming and unique medicinal plants.

Additionally, we aim to foster a culture of cooperation across the Maghreb region by enhancing communication and collaboration among communities through shared efforts. To achieve this, we will actively involve participants from neighboring regions, encourage cross-regional discussions, and explore opportunities for joint initiatives, strengthening the ties between Wikimedia communities in the Maghreb. The ultimate goal is to enrich Wikimedia projects with Libyan and Moroccan content, showcase its agricultural and environmental wealth, and encourage scientific research and global awareness about Libya and Morocco’s unique resources.

7. What are the planned activities? (required) Please provide a list of main activities. You can also add a link to the public page for your project where details about your project can be found. Alternatively, you can upload a timeline document. When the activities include partnerships, include details about your partners and planned partnerships.

Our planned activities for the Wiki Loves Africa campaign in Libya and Morocco will focus on engaging diverse audiences, promoting the campaign theme “From Plate to Farm,” and encouraging contributions to Wikimedia Commons. These activities will include advocacy, and training sessions, as detailed below:

1. Advocacy Sessions (8 sessions) These sessions will target key groups, including local communities, organizations, and individuals, to raise awareness about the campaign and the importance of documenting Libyan and Moroccan culinary and agricultural methods and processes. Purpose: Promote the campaign’s objectives and encourage participants to contribute photos, videos, and audio that align with the theme. Target Audience: Students, photographers, cultural enthusiasts, agricultural professionals, and food experts. Structure: Each session will cover the campaign theme, the benefits of contributing to Wikimedia Commons, and practical examples of contributions.

2. Introductory Sessions (3 sessions) To equip participants with the necessary tools and knowledge for effective contributions, we will conduct the following sessions:

Session 1: Campaign Overview and Theme Introduction Overview of Wiki Loves Africa, its goals, and the 2025 theme, “From Plate to Farm.” Discussion on how Libya and Morocco’s culinary traditions and agricultural practices align with the theme.

Session 2: Introduction to the ISA Tool Hands-on training on using the ISA tool to add metadata and tags to images, enhancing discoverability and usability. Explanation of how tagging supports Wikimedia projects and connects content to relevant articles.

Session 3: Commons Licensing and Upload Guidance Explanation of Wikimedia Commons’ licensing policies, emphasizing free knowledge and open access. Step-by-step guidance on uploading content, ensuring quality and compliance with Wikimedia Commons’s standards.

3. Timeline The activities will span over 2 months, allowing ample time for advocacy, training, and contributions.

These activities will ensure that the campaign effectively highlights Libya and Morocco’s rich culinary and agricultural heritage while empowering local communities to contribute to Wikimedia projects.

9. Who are the target participants and from which community? How will you engage participants before and during the activities? How will you follow up with participants after the activities? (required)

The target participants will primarily come from various groups that have an interest in preserving and documenting Libya and Morocco’s agricultural practices, food production, and related themes. Specific target groups include: Volunteers and active contributors from the Wikimedia Libya Community and Morocco who are familiar with Wikimedia tools and projects. Students and Academics: Particularly those studying agriculture, history, and cultural studies, who may contribute valuable content related to Libya and Morocco’s farming practices. Photographers and Visual Artists: Individuals with an interest in documenting agricultural practices, from plate to farm, through photos, illustrations, or video content. General Public:Libyians who may be unfamiliar with Wikimedia projects but are engaged in agriculture, food production, or other related topics.

Engagement Before and After the Activities: Invitations will be sent through Facebook, universities, and local cultural and agricultural associations. Clear information will be provided about the project’s objectives, activities, and the significance of documenting Libya and Morocco’s agricultural practices from plate to farm on Wikimedia Commons. We will highlight the importance of preserving this knowledge for future generations and the role Wikimedia projects play in making it accessible to a wider audience. An online registration form will be used to collect participant details, including their background, interest in agriculture, and specific needs (e.g., experience with Wikimedia tools, availability for online or in-person sessions). This will help us tailor our sessions to participants’ needs and encourage a diverse group. Participants will receive introductory materials such as user guides or simple tutorials about Wikimedia tools, particularly Commons. These materials will cover key concepts like content creation, uploading, and licensing. We will ensure that participants are familiar with the ISA tool for documenting and sharing relevant agricultural knowledge. We will organize online training sessions via Zoom for those unable to attend in person. For committed participants, we will hold in-person workshops in key cities to provide hands-on training on using Wikimedia projects and tools to document agricultural knowledge. A WhatsApp group will be created to foster communication, coordination, and collaboration among participants. This will allow them to ask questions, share their progress, and stay updated on session schedules and campaign milestones. After the campaign, we will share a survey with participants to evaluate their experience and gather feedback on the effectiveness of the training and the overall impact of the campaign. This will help us assess the success of the initiative and identify areas for improvement in future campaigns.

11. How did you discuss the idea of your project with your community members and/or any relevant groups? Please describe steps taken and provide links to any on-wiki community discussion(s) about the proposal. (required) You need to inform the community and/or group, discuss the project with them, and involve them in planning this proposal. You also need to align the activities with other projects happening in the planned area of implementation to ensure collaboration within the community.

Some members of the Wikimedia Libya community discussed the opportunity to participate in the Wiki Loves Africa campaign, especially following the success of the Wiki Loves Monuments campaign. Additionally, since Wiki Loves Africa is not included in the annual plan, we saw this as a chance to expand our contributions and involvement in Wikimedia projects. As a result, I took the initiative to move forward with the idea and prepare the grant application, which will provide me with valuable organizational and managerial experience. This effort also led to the formation of the team mentioned in a previous question, with roles distributed to ensure effective implementation of the project. To further strengthen this initiative, I reached out to Mounir, considering his extensive experience with Wikimedia Morocco. Together, we identified this campaign as an opportunity to build bridges and foster a culture of joint initiatives across the Maghreb region. Mounir communicated with Wikimedia Morocco, and they welcomed the idea of him leading this campaign in Morocco, marking the beginning of collaborative efforts between our communities.
