Grants:Programs/Wikimedia Community Fund/Rapid Fund/Wiki Loves Africa 2026:Rites and Rituals in Fulfulde Community (ID: 23611426)/Final Report
Application type: Standard application
Part 1: Project and impact
1. Describe the implemented activities and results achieved. Additionally, share which approaches were most effective in supporting you to achieve the results. (required)
This year's campaign started with preparing our event landing page and getting our promotional materials ready including flyers and posters for online promotions and T-shirts for outreach to connect with both amateur and professional photographers as well as photowalks. Then our very first training workshop followed up where we organized a physical training session introducing the participants to the Wiki Loves Africa 2026 and the campaign's theme Rites and Rituals, train them on phone photography and also how to contribute media files and images on the Wikimedia Commons.
Participants were encouraged to respect people's privacies during photowalks to obtain images for upload session and in order to avoid unexpected situations that could lead to unpleasant experiences we splited the photowalks participants into three groups and assigned one of the five organizers as their team lead serving as their guide, tutor and whom the could reach out to in a situation of an emergency. After the photowalks for a few days, we then call for a upload session and during this time the particpants, especially the new ones were taught how they should name their images and give them a more informative titles and captions. In that session, we helped them understand the concept of uploading the entries better and then use the community's router for the upload sessions but some were reimbursed to upload on their convinient time especially beacuse there has been network challenges during the time and the campaign was held when the majority of the participants were observing Ramadan fasting. So, the women especially alongside those who came from distant places were excused during the upload and got reimbursed to upload the images after reaching home while the remaining participants stayed and uploaded most of the images together and later, everyone continues to do so at home for the remaining contest periods.

You can recall these learning questions below: 1. In our three years of participation in the WLA campaign in the year 2023, 2024 and 2025 huge successes were achieved, therefore, are you able to maintain that impact this year and what make this year outsanding?
2. In what way(s) did your previous experiences helped in guiding you through in organizing this campaign and in shaping the success achieved in this year?
3. How can you rate your overall performance in this year's campaign when compared to previous years?
4. In what way do you think your participation in WLA make your community members feel engaged and become attached to the Wikimedia movement?
5. Were your efforts successful in addressing the content gap and knowledge inequity by increasing contributions from underrepresented region?
6. Did your retention strategies effectively encourage ongoing participation and contributions from the Fulfulde speaking community after the project is implemented?
7. What do you hope to do different in the coming year to make your campaign even more exciting?
1. Yes, we are able to maintain our impact despite the internet challenges and in this year, we were able to engage more professional photographers than ever before.
2. Our previous experiences helped in shaping this year's campaign in many ways starting from how to approach the people you target to shot as your subject to seek their permission, handling the network challenges as well as in post event follow up to ensure the relationship between us and the experienced photographers we worked with is fully maintained.
3. Our performmance can be rated 10 out of 10 because when compared to previous campaigns, we produced more number of high quality images than before and we also had the chance to upload photographs that cut across different religious beliefs, various ethnicities and distinct communities not just the Fula cultural traditions.
4. To our community members, WLA has always been a spirit booster. They always find the outdoor activities associated with the campaign, the travels and taking a breath from tedious editing work to a capture and upload fun and engaging. This is what is making them always excited about the coming of WLA campaign.
5. Yes, absolutely. We were able to produce photographs of cultures and tradtions that were not documented on Commons.
6. Yes, sure.
7. We hope to encourage the participants to do more by uploading not just photographs but also media files including videos and audios this would expand our scope and presense of our community in the campaign.
5. Did anything unexpected or surprising happen when implementing your activities? This can include both positive and negative situations. What did you learn from those experiences? (required)
Yes, we faced recurring interenet issues/bad network from all the network providers in the country making it difficult to upload images and faced challenges connecting during the workshops.
6. What is your plan to share your project learnings and results with other community members? If you have already done it, describe how. (required)
We would share this with the community members through our WhatsApp group immediately after submitting this report.
Part 3: Metrics
