6. What is the change you are trying to bring? What are the main challenges or problems you are trying to solve? Describe this change or challenges, as well as main approaches to achieve it. (required)

North Western Nigeria is a treasure trove of natural beauty, from sprawling wetlands and lush forests to fascinating wildlife. Yet, much of this natural heritage remains undocumented on Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons. This means the world is missing out on seeing these incredible places. Jigawa, Kano, and Kaduna States have never had a Wiki Loves Earth project, so we're changing that!

Without freely licensed images, these special places stay hidden. We want to showcase them to the world, highlighting their ecological and cultural importance.

Some places we'll capture: Jigawa State

  • Hadejia-Nguru Wetlands
  • Wawan Rafi Forest Reserve
  • Baturiya Wetlands Game Reserve
  • Birnin Kudu Rock Paintings
  • Gwaram Waterfalls

Kano State

Kaduna State

We're organizing the first-ever Wiki Loves Earth in these states! We'll:

  • Lead photo walks to key locations.
  • Team up with local photographers and volunteers.
  • Teach people how to share photos on Wikimedia Commons.
  • Spread the word about open access to knowledge.
  • Use these amazing photos to improve Wikipedia.
7. What are the planned activities? (required) Please provide a list of main activities. You can also add a link to the public page for your project where details about your project can be found. Alternatively, you can upload a timeline document. When the activities include partnerships, include details about your partners and planned partnerships.

We are organizing this project to document the natural beauty of Jigawa, Kano, and Kaduna States by capturing and sharing high-quality images on Wikimedia Commons.

To do this, we will hold photo walks in key locations, where experienced Wikimedians and photographers will take pictures of important sites. These include:

Jigawa State: Hadejia-Nguru Wetlands, Wawan Rafi Forest, Baturiya Wetlands, Birnin Kudu Rock Paintings, Gwaram Waterfalls, Balanga Forest, Kafin Hausa River, Sara Waterfalls, Maigatari Game Reserve, Ringim Wetlands.

Kano State: Falgore Game Reserve, Tiga Dam, Gaya Wetlands, Challawa Gorge Dam, Dambatta River, Danbatta Hills, Kano Zoo, Watari Dam, Rano Waterfalls, Bagauda Lake.

Kaduna State: Kajuru Waterfalls, Kamuku National Park, Fifth Chukker Polo & Wildlife Reserve, Kagoro Hills, Kufena Hills, Matsirga Waterfalls, Nok Cultural Site, River Kaduna, Trappco Ranch, Zaria Dam.

We will also organize training sessions where participants will learn how to take quality photos, upload them to Wikimedia Commons, and use them on Wikipedia.

To make this project successful, we will collaborate with local photographers and environmental experts. This effort will help in preserving and promoting the natural and cultural heritage of these states online.

8. Describe your team. Please provide their roles, Wikimedia Usernames and other details. (required) Include more details of the team, including their roles, usernames, Wikimedia group, and whether they are salaried, volunteers, consultants/contractors, etc. Team members involved in the grant application need to be aware of their involvement in the project.

This project will be led by a team of experienced Wikimedians with a strong background in organizing Wikimedia events, training new contributors, and improving content on Wikimedia projects. Our team members are dedicated to ensuring the success of this initiative by leveraging their expertise in community engagement, photography, and Wikipedia content enhancement.

Bashir Sani I'm one of the oldest Hausa Wikipedia editors and a highly experienced Wikimedian. I have organized and facilitated numerous Wikimedia projects across Northern Nigeria, contributing significantly to the growth of the Hausa Wikimedia community. One of my notable projects was the Wiki Photo Walk in Jigawa State 2022, where I successfully documented various locations across the state. As the project lead, I will be responsible for overseeing all activities, coordinating with team members, training participants, and ensuring the project's overall success.

  • Umar Yaryasa User:Mr. Sufie is an experience Wikimedian from Kano. His role in this project will be as a facilitator, guiding participants on uploading images to Wikimedia Commons and improving Wikipedia articles by integrating the newly captured photographs.

Usman Hamisu is an experienced Wikimedian who has been actively involved in Wikimedia projects in Northern Nigeria. He will serve as one of the project's facilitators, working closely with the team to train participants and ensure effective knowledge transfer during the events.

All three team members are dedicated volunteers with a deep understanding of Wikimedia projects. We will lead the physical training sessions, ensuring that participants gain hands-on experience in contributing to Wikimedia Commons and Wikipedia.

In addition to the core team, we will collaborate with professional photographers from each of the three states (Jigawa, Kano and Kaduna). Each state we will work with two professional photographers, who will play a crucial role in guiding us to key locations during photo walk, ensuring we capture high-quality images of the targeted natural sites. The Photo walk will take place with five participants, three are experience Wikimedians while two are Professional photographers. These photographers will also participate in our training sessions, where they will teach the participants how to take photographs suitable for Wikimedia Commons, ensuring proper licensing and metadata documentation.

9. Who are the target participants and from which community? How will you engage participants before and during the activities? How will you follow up with participants after the activities? (required)

This project will engage Wikimedia contributors, professional photographers, and environmental enthusiasts from Jigawa, Kano and Kaduna . We aim to involve both experienced and new participants who are passionate about documenting natural heritage and contributing to free knowledge.

Before the activities, we will create awareness through online training. During the project, we will conduct photo walks in different states to capture landscapes, forests, wetlands, and wildlife. We will also organize physical training sessions where participants will learn how to upload images to Wikimedia Commons and use them on Wikipedia in each state.

After the project, we will ensure long-term engagement by creating a WhatsApp group for continuous learning, hosting a virtual follow-up session for feedback, and recognizing top contributors to encourage ongoing participation. This approach will help sustain contributions to Wikimedia Commons and Wikipedia beyond the project.
