Wiki Loves Easter (WLE) is a first-of-its-kind Event designed to encourage contributions on Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons by documenting the customs, traditions, and cultural expressions associated with Easter celebrations around the world, while also marking and celebrating the Easter season in 2026. Easter is one of the most globally observed Christian celebrations, rich with religious meaning, historical significance, and diverse cultural expressions. However, many of these traditions, especially from communities in Africa and other underrepresented regions remain poorly documented on Wikimedia platforms. This project seeks to change that by mobilizing contributors to preserve and share knowledge related to Easter.

Participants will document Easter traditions and cultural practices, local Christian heritage, churches and pilgrimage sites, and biographies of notable figures in Christian history connected to Easter. As a pilot edition, Wiki Loves Easter 2026 serves as a stepping stone to test its impact and feasibility before expanding into a broader recurring global campaign. It also aims at demonstrating that Wikimedia is not only about routine editing, but also about documenting and celebrating globally significant cultural and religious moments.

Wiki Loves Easter 2026 is scheduled to run in April 2026, aligning with the Easter season, while strengthening the representation of Christian cultural heritage across Wikimedia projects.

The Challenges We Are Addressing

Limited coverage of Easter traditions: Wikimedia projects currently lack sufficient visual and textual documentation of contemporary Easter customs, rituals, and celebrations across many cultures and regions.

Insufficient representation of Christian historical figures: Biographies of important figures in Christian history, particularly those associated with Easter, Holy Week, and early Christianity, are often incomplete, underdeveloped, or entirely missing.

Low representation of local voices: Much of the existing content reflects limited geographic perspectives, with insufficient representation from local Christian communities, especially in the Global South and diaspora communities. Recruiting new Wikimedia editors: Many students in Christian universities and faith-based institutions are unaware that they can actively contribute to preserving religious and cultural heritage on Wikimedia. There is a gap between knowledge consumers and knowledge contributors.

Our Approach To address these challenges, Wiki Loves Easter 2026 will implement the following strategies:

Create Awareness: We will use social media platforms such as Instagram, WhatsApp, Facebook, and X to promote the campaign, share educational content about Easter traditions, and highlight opportunities to participate. Outreach will also include engagement with Christian associations, Christian student associations, campus fellowships, and church youth communities to raise awareness about contributing to Wikimedia.

Content Creation and Documentation During the campaign period, we will organize a combination of training workshops and edit-a-thon (both virtual and physical). These sessions will teach participants how to create and improve articles and upload images to Wikimedia Commons. Special focus will be placed on documenting local Easter celebrations, churches, pilgrimage activities, and cultural expressions.

Partnerships: We will collaborate with Christian associations, Christian universities, churches, and faith-based student organizations to mobilize participants who are already actively engaged with Easter traditions. Cultural institutions and local heritage groups will also be approached to support documentation efforts and provide historical or cultural context.

Editor Support and Retention: We will prioritize participant support through hands-on training, beginner-friendly editing guides, mentorship from experienced Wikimedians, and post-event follow-up. Through partnerships with Wikimedia communities, educational institutions, and faith-based organizations, these activities will support participants in contributing high-quality content to Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons while promoting cultural preservation and open knowledge.

Planned Activities for Wiki Loves Easter.

Create Awareness: We plan to raise awareness through various media, both online and offline channels, like social media and public talks. On social media, we plan to utilize digital materials like flyers, short videos, and informative posts to capture attention, increase participation, and encourage participation. For public talks and outreach sessions, we will employ creative and interactive methods to engage prospective participants via one-on-one conversations, informal group discussions.

Online Training workshop: We will host a virtual training session to prepare participants to contribute effectively. We will focus on creating and improving Wikipedia articles, adding reliable references for religious and cultural topics, and upload easter-related media to Wikimedia commons.

Physical training and editing session: We will organize an in-person training and editing session where participants will collaboratively contribute to Wikimedia projects. This session will provide hands-on guidance on editing Wikipedia articles, improving existing content related to Easter celebrations, religious practices, and cultural heritage, as well as uploading and properly categorizing media on Wikimedia Commons. Experienced facilitators will be available to support participants, answer questions, and ensure contributions meet Wikimedia standards.

Contest: The campaign will conclude with an online contest open to all participants. Prizes will be awarded to the top 3 contributors, the top newest editor. This aims to celebrate participant efforts and sustain engagement beyond the campaign.

Favourdare123 (Project Lead): I am an experienced editor with extensive training experience. I have led the WikiVibrance International Youth Day (IYD) 2022 project and EveryBookItsReader 2024: African Books and Authors. I have co-facilitated significant editing campaigns on both Wikipedia and Wikidata. Notably, I co-facilitated the Wikimedia Awareness Outreach in Abuja and the Harnessing the Power of Open Data: Maximizing Wikidata Technical Tools workshops. As the project lead, I will develop tailored training resources to enhance contributions for both new and experienced editors. Throughout the physical and online events, I will guide participants in interactive edit-a-thons to ensure they acquire essential skills aligned with our project's objectives. Additionally, I will oversee the overall success of the project across the four communities, train editors on English Wikipedia and initiate community engagement activities and oversee the award presentation in the Wikimedia community in Ilorin.

Akintundedaniel (Co-facilitator and Jury): He is an experienced editor with extensive project facilitation and training experience, having accumulated over 10,000 contributions and still counting. he has led various projects across global campaigns in his local community, such as SheSaid, Art + Feminism, Wiki Loves Earth, Feminism and Folklore, and Wiki Loves Africa. As a project lead, he has promoted gender equity by profiling notable women and documenting their contributions to the global economy. His experience with projects promoting gender equity includes projects like Shesaid event in Nigeria 2024, Women in Art and Technology 2023, Feminism and Folklore 2024 Unilorin, and Art + Feminism 2024 & 2025 Unilorin. As the project lead, he will oversee all aspects of this project, ensuring that all contributions align with our goals. He will lead training sessions, provide guidance and mentorship throughout the edit-a-thon, and oversee the growth of the community we build through this campaign.

Jessephu (Co-facilitator and logistics, and Jury): He currently serves President of the Unilorin Wikimedia Fan Club. He is an experienced Wikiquote editor and trainer who has participated in and won major campaigns, including the She Said 2022 campaign focused on women in education. He also served as a co-facilitator and jury member for the SheSaid Nigeria 2024 event and is a team member of the Say It Right campaign, contributing to efforts that improve accurate representation and pronunciation of names on Wikimedia projects. For this project, he will co-facilitate the training sessions, support participants during the edit-a-thon, and handle communications and logistics for both the team and attendees. His strong background in article review, organizing events, mentoring new editors, and serving as a jury member will play a key role in ensuring a smooth event and helping participants create high-quality Wikipedia and Wikimedia commons.

The campaign will spotlight the rituals that characterize the Easter season, from Palm Sunday processions and Holy Week observances to Good Friday services, Easter Vigil ceremonies, sunrise services, baptisms, choir performances, and Easter Sunday celebrations.

Participants will be encouraged to capture and share visuals such as church decorations, liturgical vestments, candlelight services, dramatic reenactments of the Passion, traditional Easter meals, community gatherings, and family celebrations.

Special emphasis will be placed on engaging underrepresented Christian communities and Christian universities across regions and cultures, ensuring their unique expressions of Easter rites and traditions are preserved and represented on platforms like Wikipedia, and Commons. This includes documenting local languages used in worship, indigenous hymns, traditional attire, and community-specific ways of marking the season.

Before and during the contest, participants will be supported through pre-campaign orientation sessions, training workshops, task lists, editing guides, and mentorship programs facilitated via online platforms and chat groups. Engagement will remain high weekly on community storytelling events that focus on different aspects of Easter observances, such as Holy Week traditions, music and hymns, church architecture, pilgrimage activities, and festive foods.

By organizing Wiki Loves Easter 2026, we aim to gain valuable experience and achieve the following learning outcomes:

1. Project Management As project leads and facilitators, we aim to strengthen our project management skills by taking full responsibility for planning, coordinating, and executing all aspects of Wiki Loves Easter. This includes organizing training sessions and edit-a-thons, managing volunteers, coordinating partnerships with Christian associations and community groups, and ensuring all activities align with the Events goals. Through this process, we will also deepen our understanding of how to design culturally sensitive Wikimedia projects that document religious traditions in a respectful, neutral, and well sourced manner.

2. Community Building We want to better understand how to build and sustain a culture focused editing community. This project will help us identify the motivations that encourage participants especially students and church youth communities to remain active contributors beyond a single event. By providing mentorship, follow-up engagement, and sharing future Wikimedia opportunities, we hope to develop strategies that support long-term editor retention. Collaborating with Christian associations, universities, and local cultural groups will also give us insight into how cultural communities can successfully engage with open knowledge platforms.

3. Enhanced Editing and Documentation Skills Through hands on participation, we aim to strengthen our skills in creating and improving articles related to Easter traditions, Christian heritage, historical figures, and cultural practices. We will also improve our ability to upload and describe media files on Wikimedia Commons and contribute structured data on Wikidata.
