The Wiki Loves Easter campaign was successfully implemented through a combination of awareness, training, and editing activities designed to engage both new and experienced contributors. The project began with an introductory session that familiarized participants with the objectives of the campaign, followed by practical training on editing Wikipedia, contributing to Wikidata, and uploading relevant media to Wikimedia Commons where applicable.
Throughout the campaign, participants worked on creating new articles, improving existing articles, and adding structured data related to Easter traditions, celebrations, churches, cultural heritage, and other relevant topics.
The project achieved its primary objectives by increasing participant engagement, expanding Wikimedia content related to Easter, and strengthening the editing skills of both new and returning contributors. In addition to the content created and improved, the campaign fostered greater awareness of how Wikimedia projects can be used to document cultural and religious heritage.
The most effective approaches included hands-on training sessions, continuous mentorship during the editing period, clear documentation of editing tasks, and consistent communication through online platforms. Providing real-time support and encouraging collaboration among participants significantly improved retention, participation, and the overall quality of contributions. These approaches created an inclusive learning environment and contributed greatly to the successful implementation of the campaign.

You can recall these learning questions below: By organizing Wiki Loves Easter 2026, we aim to gain valuable experience and achieve the following learning outcomes:
1. Project Management As project leads and facilitators, we aim to strengthen our project management skills by taking full responsibility for planning, coordinating, and executing all aspects of Wiki Loves Easter. This includes organizing training sessions and edit-a-thons, managing volunteers, coordinating partnerships with Christian associations and community groups, and ensuring all activities align with the Events goals. Through this process, we will also deepen our understanding of how to design culturally sensitive Wikimedia projects that document religious traditions in a respectful, neutral, and well sourced manner.
2. Community Building
We want to better understand how to build and sustain a culture focused editing community. This project will help us identify the motivations that encourage participants especially students and church youth communities to remain active contributors beyond a single event. By providing mentorship, follow-up engagement, and sharing future Wikimedia opportunities, we hope to develop strategies that support long-term editor retention. Collaborating with Christian associations, universities, and local cultural groups will also give us insight into how cultural communities can successfully engage with open knowledge platforms.
3. Enhanced Editing and Documentation Skills
Through hands on participation, we aim to strengthen our skills in creating and improving articles related to Easter traditions, Christian heritage, historical figures, and cultural practices. We will also improve our ability to upload and describe media files on Wikimedia Commons and contribute structured data on Wikidata. This experience will enhance our capacity to document cultural and religious heritage in line with Wikimedia’s sourcing, neutrality, and notability standards.
4. Understanding Contributor Challenges
This project will help us identify the challenges contributors face when documenting religious and cultural topics. These may include difficulties in finding reliable sources, balancing faith perspectives with neutrality, or technical barriers when uploading media. Understanding these challenges will allow us to develop better support systems and guidance materials for future culture- and heritage-focused Wikimedia initiatives.
5. Feedback and Continuous Improvement
We plan to actively collect feedback from participants, partners, and facilitators throughout the campaign. This will help us evaluate what worked well and what can be improved in areas such as training delivery, communication, and participant support. The lessons learned will inform future editions of Wiki Loves Easter and other culturally focused Wikimedia campaigns, making them more inclusive, effective, and impactful.

Enhanced Editing Skills: Through active participation in editing Wikimedia projects, particularly Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons, we aim to strengthen our skills in article creation, article improvement, referencing, citation practices, and adherence to Wikimedia's quality standards. This hands-on experience will not only contribute to the success of the project but also enhance our overall capacity to make high-quality contributions across Wikimedia platforms in the future.
4. Feedback and Continuous Improvement: We actively collected participant feedback throughout the project to evaluate our activities, identify areas for improvement, and refine future initiatives. These insights will help make future projects more effective, inclusive, and impactful while encouraging sustained participation in Wikimedia activities.
Implementing the inaugural Wiki Loves Easter project provided valuable learning experiences by translating planning into practical action across project coordination, community engagement, and content contribution. As a pilot edition, the project offered important lessons that will guide future iterations.
From a project management perspective, we gained a deeper appreciation for the importance of early planning, clearly defined roles, and consistent communication in maintaining volunteer motivation and ensuring smooth project execution. Coordinating activities, managing timelines, and working with partners reinforced the value of organization, accountability, and adaptability in community-driven initiatives.
In terms of community building, the project highlighted that long-term engagement is strengthened by relevance, regular follow-up, mentorship, and creating a sense of belonging. Participants were more likely to remain active when they felt supported, recognized, and connected to future opportunities within the Wikimedia movement. Collaboration with external communities also demonstrated the importance of aligning expectations and working toward shared goals to increase participation and impact.
From a technical standpoint, the project emphasized the importance of practical training and hands-on support in improving editing skills, particularly in areas such as sourcing, referencing, and content quality. It also revealed challenges associated with documenting women-focused topics, including limited source availability and gaps in representation, underscoring the need for targeted support, improved documentation, and continued advocacy for knowledge equity.
5. Did anything unexpected or surprising happen when implementing your activities? This can include both positive and negative situations. What did you learn from those experiences? (required)
Yes. One notable unexpected outcome was the high level of interest and enthusiasm shown by first-time contributors. While many participants were eager to contribute, some initially lacked confidence due to limited familiarity with Wikimedia policies, editing guidelines, and content standards. This highlighted the importance of providing accessible training and ongoing support for newcomers.
Another unexpected challenge was the misconception among some participants that Wiki Loves Easter was exclusively for Christians. Through our outreach, orientation sessions, and discussions, we were able to clarify that the campaign is open to everyone, regardless of religious background, and that its primary goal is to document and celebrate Easter-related knowledge, culture, and heritage on Wikimedia platforms. This clarification helped create a more inclusive environment and encouraged broader participation.
From these experiences, I learned that effective onboarding, patient mentorship, and clear communication are essential for fostering participant confidence and engagement. I also learned the value of adaptive planning and addressing misconceptions early, as these factors contribute significantly to both participant success and the overall resilience of a project.
