The primary goal of Wiki Loves Folklore & Feminism is to enrich Wikimedia Commons and Wikipedia with media and written content(swahili) that capture the diversity of folklore, cultural heritage, and women’s roles in these traditions. Many aspects of intangible cultural heritage from local dances, music, and attire to myths, folktales, and unique customs are underrepresented on these platforms, especially in the context of gender. We aim to address two main challenges: 1. Underrepresentation of Cultural Heritage: Many unique aspects of global folk traditions are missing from Wikimedia Commons and Wikipedia. By organizing a photography contest focused on documenting folklore, we encourage contributors to share images that showcase the rich cultural diversity of their regions. 2. Gender Gap in Folklore-Related Content: Folklore often includes significant contributions by women, but these contributions are not well-represented on Wikipedia. The repeating Feminism and Folklore writing sessions will focus on creating and enhancing articles that highlight women’s roles in folklore and intangible heritage.
We plan to these;
- Photography Hunting and Contest: Participants will be invited to a photography contest to capture their local folk traditions, with awards for the top three photos. By involving photographers from various regions. In our previous 2 works we upload quality and well educated and narrated photos about Monuments and another about Women in various categories, the works can be found in here [1] and [2]
- Wikipedia Editing Sessions: Alongside the photography contest, we’ll organize Wikipedia editing sessions focused on creating and improving articles about folklore and feminist themes.
- 7. What are the planned activities? (required) Please provide a list of main activities. You can also add a link to the public page for your project where details about your project can be found. Alternatively, you can upload a timeline document. When the activities include partnerships, include details about your partners and planned partnerships.
Planned Activities; 1. Photography Hunt and Contest: Organize a photography contest inviting participants to capture images of local folklore and cultural heritage. The top three photos will win prizes based on cultural relevance and quality.
2. Wikipedia Editing Sessions: Host editing sessions to create and improve articles focused on women’s roles in folklore and cultural traditions, providing training for new editors on documentation techniques and many more.
3. Community Engagement and Outreach: Promote the project through social media, community forums, and partnerships with local cultural organizations and women’s groups to encourage broad participation.
4. Partnerships: Collaborate with cultural institutions ie Masai Camp, and women’s organizations ie Ministry of Culture arts and sports in Tanzania and Taasisi ya Sanaa na Utamaduni Bagamoyo (TaSUBa) to support event promotion, expertise, and training sessions.
