General information[edit]

  • Title of Proposal: Wiki Loves Folklore 2023 in Benin
  • Username of Applicant: Azogbonon
  • Name of Organization: N/A
  • Amount awarded: 2162.57
  • Amount spent: 2162.57 USD, 1370000 XOF

Part 1 Understanding your work[edit]

1. Briefly describe how your proposed activities and strategies were implemented

For this campaign, the activities and strategies adopted have been successful because we have worked with new people exclusively in order to make them want to contribute even after the project is over, both in uploading images and in producing content on Wikipedia. This situation allows us to train people in the hope that they will take over the movement after us. And this is the goal I have set myself. To train young people and in the lot detected the most assiduous in order to make them participate has other projects.

2. Were there any strategies or approaches that you felt were effective in achieving your goals? Please describe these strategies and approaches.

Yes, the approach of responsibility and open-mindedness. It gives weapons to the new ones. During my tour with the wiki tours north Benin, I trained young students with whom I discovered the desire to learn and for lack of training and information they did not know where to start. So during this campaign, after communication on our social networks to inform the community of the launch, for the participation of all, I included the young people trained a few months earlier, which allowed a work that I am proud of, because the experience of the elders was an important help for the young recruits

3. Please use this space to upload media and other files that help tell your story and impact.

4. To what extent do you agree with the following statements regarding the work carried out with the support of this Fund? You can choose “not applicable” if your work does not relate to these goals.

Our efforts during the Fund period have helped to...
A. Bring in participants from underrepresented groups Agree
B. Create a more inclusive and connected culture in our community Agree
C. Develop content about underrepresented topics/groups Agree
D. Develop content from underrepresented perspectives Agree
E. Encourage the retention of editors Agree
F. Encourage the retention of organizers Agree

5. Is there anything else you would like to share about how your efforts helped to bring in participants and/or build out content, particularly for underrepresented groups?

This campaign involved people who knew nothing about how to contribute. The creation of accounts during the campaign proves, and even after this campaign I kept the participants by inviting them to contribute through trainings that I give online or in person on behalf of the Knowledge Workshop working group. Thanks to this campaign I was able to keep the desire of people to continue even without a campaign. Even hiethis campaign to involve people who knew nothing about how to contribute. The creation of accounts during the campaign proves it, and even after this campaign, I kept the participants by inviting them to contribute through trainings that I give online or in person on behalf of the Knowledge Workshop working group. Thanks to this campaign, I was able to keep people wanting to continue even without a campaign. Yesterday together with volunteers like me who created their account two weeks ago together we wrote an article just to show them that everyone can contribute even being in a less wealthy country the article is here: https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cybercriminalité_au_Bénin

and the pictures of the two training sessions: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Atelier_du_savoir

Part 2: Your main learning[edit]

6. In your application, you outlined your learning priorities. What did you learn about these areas during this period?

In 1 the non follow-up after the campaigns: Indeed when you go to train people for a campaign there are dozens of people who come for each training. These people are grouped into three categories of people namely people who come because there is a connection available so they can download films or documentaries. Secondly, people who come because they know that there will be a snack or a lunch. In 3, people who are passionate about learning even after the training so that they are not limited to one project. Then in the batch of 10 I quickly detect the people of the third category of people because I leave my coordinates while explaining to them the happiness to belong to an associative world and to contribute to its development. Then when one or two people contact me after the training that becomes a pride and I roll them up in a WhatsApp group that I created for the circumstance or I assign them tasks at the beginning and I am with them, after that I ask them which projects they are interested in: wikipedia, wikiquote, wikidata... then I train them online (by offering them the internet) or in person when we agree on the place and time. This is how I learn through them because it pushes me to be trained by more experienced volunteers (especially the user and administrator Moumou82 from Switzerland) than me and I come to duplicate it with them.

7. Did anything unexpected or surprising happen when implementing your activities? This can include both positive and negative situations. What did you learn from those experiences?

Yes the unexpected there was and a lot. I did not receive the funds for the campaign for several reasons. I made a return to Veronica, Davit and Rupika following an internal problem. I made the point to the authority that manages the conflicts because of the irregularities that I noticed. I took measures to make myself understood. Then as I know that I had to file a report since the project is already approved and the documents signed, and since I hired newcomers in the movement, in order to push them to enter the movement and to show them the advantages of being a regular and passionate volunteer, I released my own funds for the campaign in order to carry it out and be able to file the report. The statistics will show that the major contributors to this campaign have recently created their accounts and have done an amazing job. Given their commitment to the movement which continues to the my fear is that they will become discouraged if I do not manage to honor my promises on their reward and also in order to make me look good as there have been things done and promises made.

8. How do you hope to use this learning? For instance, do you have any new priorities, ideas for activities, or goals for the future?

Yes, I have set 3 major objectives. The first one is to continue to train people massively in order to increase active contributors on the African portal in general and especially in Benin in particular. In second position, to remain in the educational field because nothing is better than having educational learners, that allows a continuity in the contributions to the free knowledge and also allows that these train other people afterwards. In third position, to continue with the African cultural heritage because it allows me first to meet people sharing the same desires as me (tradition), and especially to document cultural realities through the projects of the Foundation.

9. Documentation of resources: Use this space to upload any documents that would be useful to share with others (e.g. communications material, training material, presentations).

I have informed in our different telegram groups, WhatsApp and private message of the results of this campaign. Informing the participants of the fight that I am carrying out so that the community is no longer under the yoke of one or few people. Blocking the growth and development of the community while respecting inclusion, bringing back people with whom there was a conflict to join us. Also by explaining to them that I will do what is necessary to ensure that their participation in this campaign is truly rewarded and that they continue to contribute by inviting volunteers to join the movement so that the rate of African contributors is on the rise, but all this in clarity and honesty.

Yes

22. If you have additional recommendations or reflections that don’t fit into the above sections, please write them here.

Despite the fact that I did not receive the funds for the campaign because of a problem in my community. I did fill in the space in question 15-16. Rupika, Davit, Veronica and the organization that deals with it are informed. I remain available for any explanation. On the other hand, I am constantly concerned about this situation because I have hired, promised new people that their efforts and contributions to the movement would be rewarded, known to all. My fear is that they will become discouraged and we will lose committed potential contributors. The statistics show that there is a lot of work to be done.
