Wiki Loves Folklore 2023 in Tunisia

Q. Indicate if it is a local, international, or regional proposal and if it involves several countries? (optional)

Local

Q2. If you have answered regional or international, please write the country names and any other information that is useful for understanding your proposal.

R. If you would like, please share any websites or social media accounts that your group or organization has.

1. What is the change that you are trying to bring about and why is this important.

Tunisia has a very rich cultural heritage it is expressed through traditional celebrations of weddings (and other events), culinary art, music... but the amount of freely licensed photos of listed cultural heritage in Tunisia on commons is still low. As time goes by this heritage becomes less accessible because of the modernization of people's life habits. Through this proposal we hope to engage communities connected to cultural initiatives to work with Wikimedia projects as a vehicle to document and communicate their work We believe that connecting this to global campaigns such Wiki Loves Folklore will also make us gain more visibility and learn from other Wikimedian communities.

2. Describe your main approaches or strategies to achieve these changes and why you think they will be effective.

-Recruit newcomers : We will try to relocate the event in another city than the capital Tunis in order to target new communities. The in-person event will take place in Mahdia a rich cultural city whose inhabitants are very attached to their traditions and are glad to share it to the world. in addition to that offering prizes will encourage photographers to participate. This approach proved its effeciency in the previous contests.

  • Building the capacity of the community members: it is important to acquaite the participants with the policy and interface of the wikimedia projects, an experienced wikimedian will lead the training of the photographers.
3. What are the activities you will be developing and delivering as part of these approaches or strategies?

in February we will promote the event via mailing lists and social media. The in-person event will take place in March: A photowalk in an art and crafts village will be organised as well as an exposition of a set of traditional meals to be photographed by participants; In the afternoon a workshop to introduce photographers to wikimedia projects and wikicommons. In April: the jury (a panel of 3 people from mixed backgrounds) will judge photos in several rounds. In June: a closing ceremony and an exhibition of the 10 best photos of the contest will be held in Mahdia.

In July: i will write the project report.
