Folklore in Nigeria refers to the body of traditional stories, beliefs, customs, proverbs, songs, dances, and art forms passed down orally or through cultural practices across generations. It is deeply rooted in the diverse ethnic and linguistic groups of Nigeria, reflecting the values, history, and worldview of the people. Nigerian folklore plays a crucial role in preserving the identity of its communities and continues to be a significant aspect of cultural expression and education. Nigeria is a diverse country with multicultural beliefs and tradition and its folklore is vast and diverse, yet it remains underrepresented on Wikimedia platforms. There is a huge knowledge gap in the documentation of our folklore, like In the Northern part of Nigeria, There is a knowledge gap with the story of Queen Amina of zazzau: folklore surrounding her reign and exploits, Bayagiddas the Hero who founded the hausa state and the Durba festival: its original and significance in the northern - Nigeria. These folklore are undocumented from the documentation, from the written aspect to the pictorial aspect of the folklore, In the Western part of Nigeria, we have what is called Oriki: It is a Yoruba literary genre that involves poetic verses to praise a person, family, or tribe.
The word oriki is a combination of the Yoruba words orí meaning "head" and kì meaning "to praise or greet". This Oriki is seen in every family but do you know it is dying and the older ones who have passed it from generation to generation are dying. It is also time to start documenting this unique folklore in Yoruba land. In Osun state, many of the local towns in Osun state which is about 41 of them, their folk traditions, customs, and cultural heritage are missing on their Wikipedia articles. Example Aiyedire town in Osun state does not have representation of its folklore stories, like The Drum of Unity is missing, the Aiyedire Forest and its myths and stories are missing under the article. On Ila Orangun”s article on Wikipedia, the folklore is missing, staff of Ajagunla is from the city but undocumented and holds a significant role among the people of Ila Orangun. That is how it is for articles written about cities in Osun state. The Eastern part of Nigeria will be documenting the folklore and traditions of the Eastern people.
With this proposal, we aim to bring about a significant shift in the way Nigeria’s rich and diverse cultural heritage is represented on Wikimedia projects. This shift can help the educational sector because many schools in Nigeria today have made history not a compulsory subject. How do the generation now and yet unborn know about our folklore when civilization has taken everything away from us. It's like we are losing our identity as a people. When you talk about the unpopular folklore to children born in the 1990’s , they ask what is that. There was a time as children while growing up, in the evenings we sat with our grandparents under the moonlight and she told us stories about our town, folk stories every night. We called it Alo in Yoruba land( Meaning stories, they tell us folk stories related to our origin). Children of my age group then looked forward to moments of Alo with their grandparents. Now social media has taken away the educational fun time with grandparents. Children are now on their phones distracted. Preserving these folklores will help to educate the younger ones who didn't have those Alo times with their grandparents but stuck on social media. Another knowledge gap which is undocumented Folklore stories which narratives are around feminism and women’s roles in Nigeria which often are overlooked or relegated to the margins. . Through the Wiki Loves Folklore and Feminism campaign, we intend to document and celebrate local cultural practices, folklore traditions, and the significant but often underrepresented roles of women within these cultural narratives. This effort is critical for the preservation, awareness, and global accessibility of these traditions.By combining the themes of folklore and feminism, we seek to bridge the knowledge gap, inspire cultural pride, and ensure the preservation of stories that highlight the contributions of women in society.
The tradition is dying because of civilization and so many undocumented traditions. We also want to foster an inclusive and active community of contributors from various regions across Nigeria, encouraging participation in the free knowledge movement.
Main Challenges or Problems We Are Trying to Solve Cultural Knowledge Gaps: Nigeria is home to a myriad of cultural practices, stories, music, art, and rituals that are passed down orally through generations. Unfortunately, much of this rich folklore remains undocumented or inaccessible in the digital sphere, especially on platforms like Wikipedia and Wikicommons. We can use oral documentation to store dying stories, dying myths. This cultural knowledge gap we are trying to fill, has a far reaching side effect on our representation as a people, that is why we are bringing six communities together and a media fan club to document and fill the knowledge gaps. Osun network and OAU Fan club would be working together because they are both in Osun state and the documentation of Osun folklore is very large. Things are so bad that in 2019, Dr Bukar Usman, President Nigerian Folklore Society The Nigerian Folklore Society (NFS) called on media practitioners to promote and preserve Nigerian culture by airing cartoons, video games and movies, among others. Dr Bukar Usman, the President of the society, made the appeal in an interview with the News Agency in Abuja( https://nta.ng/2019/05/16/cultural-preservation-society-tasks-media-on-folklore/)He also said to sustain and preserve the Nigerian culture our reliance is on the media to carry the message across board not only to citizens but even to the entire world that there is something we are promoting in Nigeria
These gaps have led to a significant loss of cultural knowledge over time, reducing the visibility of Nigeria’s cultural heritage to both local and international audiences. 2 Cultural Erosion: The decline of oral traditions and folklore due to globalization and insufficient archiving efforts.
Low Community Participation and Awareness: There is a lack of active participation from local communities in contributing their knowledge to Wikimedia platforms. This issue stems from limited awareness, a shortage of training opportunities, and a perceived inaccessibility of editing and contributing to Wikipedia. The challenge is more pronounced in regions where literacy and internet access might be barriers, alongside the general hesitation to engage in digital knowledge-sharing. Gender Imbalance in Content and Representation: Women, who play a crucial role in Nigerian folklore and cultural traditions, are often underrepresented on Wikipedia and related projects. The gender gap in content and the scarcity of women storytellers or historians in existing digital narratives perpetuate a gender bias, reducing the richness of the cultural heritage that gets documented. Furthermore, women’s contributions in cultural, artistic, and storytelling realms are often overshadowed or undocumented, leading to a skewed representation that fails to fully capture the cultural fabric. Language Barrier is another effect to the documentation of Folklore. If we can document these stories in our different languages, the originality of the stories would be preserved and this will help reduce the huge knowledge gap affecting the documentation Digital Documentation and preservation: This can also be a very huge barrier. Many people in Africa don't like reading so also writing, when they perceive Wikipedia as just a writing tool, this can discourage them, whereas we have other sister projects which they can use to store our folklore which is Wikicommons. Training and encouraging more people to contribute and document on Wikicommons can also bring about a very huge change in the documentation of our folklore and in the perception of contributions to Wikipedia.
Approaches to Achieve This Change
Community Collaboration and Partnerships:
We will engage six local Wikimedia community and Nigerian Institute of Journalism Fan Club, OAU Fan club, leaders from Anambra, Imo, the Igala-speaking regions, Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) Ile Ife and Osun Network, Kaduna, and Gombe State. These leaders will play a pivotal role in mobilizing volunteers, providing training, and fostering collaboration among different cultural groups.
By establishing partnerships with cultural organizations, educational institutions, and community groups, we will create a robust network to support the documentation efforts.( Efforts are on going to bring the ministry of arts and culture into the project, Council of Tourism in Lagos state, The Osun community is working with Rosetta Life community; a community of artists and Creative, Moremi organisation in Osun State, in Anambra, the community is partnering with community stakeholders in Nnewi which are traditional chieftains that have the indigenous knowledge of folklores.
Organizing Targeted Workshops and Training Sessions: We will host a series of in-person and virtual workshops tailored to different skill levels, equipping participants with essential skills for content creation on Wikimedia platforms. This training will cover photo documentation, article writing, Oral documentation, and techniques for translating cultural content into digital formats. The workshops will also include gender-sensitivity training to ensure that women’s roles in cultural narratives are accurately and respectfully represented. Campaigns and Contests to Drive Engagement: We will organize the Wiki Loves Folklore contest to inspire participants to photograph and upload images of local cultural practices, rituals, art forms, and festivals. This visual documentation will enrich the repository of free cultural media. There will be oral documentation by the Nigerian institute of Journalism fanclub. Document the Oriki in Yoruba land. The Folklore and Feminism campaign will run concurrently, with a special focus on highlighting and documenting the roles and stories of women in Nigerian folklore. This component will motivate participants to write and translate articles, ensuring that women's contributions are brought to the forefront. Outreach and Raising Awareness: We will create awareness campaigns through social media, and local outreach programs to inform and invite communities to participate in our documentation efforts. This approach will emphasize the importance of preserving cultural heritage, Folklore and the benefits of contributing to Wikimedia projects. We will leverage local festivals and university events to engage people, offering hands-on activities that spark interest in cultural documentation. Creating a Sustainable Community of Contributors: Beyond the campaign, we will work on establishing a sustainable model for continuous contribution. This includes setting up mentorship programs, creating local user groups, and offering ongoing support to volunteers interested in contributing long-term to Wikimedia projects. We aim to build a lasting impact by nurturing a community that feels empowered and equipped to share their cultural heritage with the world. Through these concerted efforts, we envision a more diverse and inclusive representation of Nigeria’s cultural and feminist heritage on Wikimedia platforms, enriching the global knowledge landscape and preserving these stories for generations to come.
