Wiki Loves Monuments 2025 in Northern Nigeria aims to ensure that our history and cultural landmarks are not lost to time. By involving communities and giving visibility to our rich heritage through Wikimedia, this project creates an enduring impact in education, tourism and cultural identity.

Moreover, this campaign will provide an opportunity to highlight important historical elements. There are tribes that have not yet been documented on Wikipedia, such as the Gamergu tribe, Kotoko tribe from Borno, and Tula, Waja, Ngas language from Adamawa, Mambila people from Taraba. These tribes have a rich history that should be continuously preserved and shared.

Also there's places that are rich in history but are underrepresented or not covered at all on Wikipedia movement.

1. Bauchi State is home to many rich and remarkable places waiting to be documented in Wikipedia platforms, including the Tunga Dutse Rock Engravings, Dukkey Wells, and Kalban Hill.

2. Rabeh’s Fort in Dikwa, Borno State, Built in the late 19th century by Rabeh ibn Fadlallah after his conquest of the Kanem-Bornu Empire.

3. Mbormi Battle Ground in Gombe State Site of the 1903 battle where Sultan Muhammadu Attahiru I was killed resisting British colonial forces.

Organizing photo walk activities

Photo Walks are an important part of the Wiki Loves Monuments campaign. They bring together local photographers, culture lovers and community members to explore and photograph historic landmarks. During these walks, participants get practical training on how to take clear, high-quality photos and properly document what they capture. It’s a fun, hands on way to learn photography while helping preserve cultural heritage through images.

Conducting Edit-a-thons

Edit-a-thons are also a key part of the campaign. They bring together both new and experienced Wikipedia editors from Northern Nigeria to learn and collaborate. These events focus on teaching people how to improve and create Wikipedia articles, especially by translating them into local languages like Hausa and Fulfulde. Seasoned editors help guide newcomers through the basics of editing and following Wikipedia's guidelines. Participants also learn how to upload photos to Wikimedia Commons and add important information like descriptions and categories. The goal is to make Northern Nigeria’s cultural heritage and historic sites more visible and accessible to people everywhere.
