Le projet Wiki Loves Monuments 2025 au Burundi a permis à la communauté Wikijambo et à tous les contributeurs du Burundi de participer à la campagne internationale Wiki Loves Monuments en partageant des photographies de monuments historiques, de patrimoine architectural et de sites culturellement significatifs à travers le pays. Les participants à la campagne WLM 2025 ont visité divers monuments reconnus et sites architecturaux emblématiques au Burundi pour les documenter à travers la photographie et télécharger leurs images sur Wikimedia Commons.Au cours de la campagne, ce fut l’occasion de recruter de nouveaux contributeurs qui ont contribué à la campagne et nous espérons qu’ils continueront à contribuer aux projets Wikimedia, car nous restons avec les nouveaux bénévoles avec nos canaux de communication. Afin de nous aider à atteindre les résultats, nous avons fourni un retour d’information continu et une communication régulière pour permettre la résolution des problèmes ; Nous avons également mis en place des formations pour soutenir les contributeurs dans leurs activités.

1. How can the Wiki Loves Monuments contest enhance the recognition and appreciation of Burundi's cultural heritage among participants and the public? 2. What specific obstacles do local communities face when contributing to Wikimedia projects, and what effective solutions can we propose? 3. What are the best methods to raise awareness among local populations, especially youth and underrepresented groups, about the importance of documenting their heritage? 4.What concrete impact can increased participation in the contest have on enriching Wikimedia projects concerning to Burundi?
Expected results:
- Discovery of Burundian Heritage: Highlight Burundi’s richness and diversity through images and other content created during the project.
- Understanding local dynamics: Study local participation dynamics to adjust our future approaches.
- Impact on national pride: Measure the impact of the contest on the sense of national pride and community among participants.
- Accessibility and inclusion: Find ways to make Wikimedia platforms more accessible and inclusive.
These learnings will guide our future efforts to strengthen African contributions to Wikimedia and ensure a lasting impact of our initiatives.
During the implementation of the Wiki Loves Monuments 2025 project in Burundi, we gained several valuable insights related to our learning questions:
1.Recognition of Cultural Heritage We observed that the contest sparked genuine interest in Burundian heritage among both participants and the general public. The visual documentation of monuments enabled the rediscovery of often overlooked sites, thereby strengthening cultural pride and a sense of connection to our history. Discussions around the photos fostered collective awareness of the importance of preserving and promoting our heritage.
2.Challenges Faced and Solutions The main challenges identified included:
- Lack of familiarity with Wikimedia tools
- Limited internet access in certain regions
- Low representation of women and youth
To address these, we implemented:
- Targeted training and support sessions
- Ongoing communication through local channels
- Partnerships with educational institutions to reach young people
3.Outreach to Underrepresented Groups The most effective methods were:
- Organizing photo walks and hybrid events
- Using social media to share tailored messages
- Involving experienced contributors as mentors for newcomers
These approaches helped expand our audience and encourage more inclusive participation.
4.Impact on Wikimedia Projects Increased participation significantly enriched Wikimedia projects:
- Over 450 files were added to Wikimedia Commons
- Wikipedia articles were created or improved
- Links were established between images
This contributes to greater visibility for Burundi on international platforms.
Future Use of Learnings
These insights will guide our upcoming initiatives:
- Strengthening training and mentorship programs
- Developing bilingual guides (Kirundi, French, Swahili, Kifuliru, Kibembe, Mashi, Lingala) to improve accessibility
- Adapting our communication strategies to local realities
- Continuing our efforts toward a more inclusive, representative, and sustainable Wikimedia

Pour partager les résultats de Wiki Loves Monuments 2025, j’ai organisé une réunion hybride en avril 2025 à Bujumbura pour discuter des images téléchargées sur Commons et échanger les meilleures pratiques. Dans le même temps, au Burundi, nous avons mis en avant Wiki Loves Monuments, une initiative visant à mettre en valeur le patrimoine culturel du pays.
À l’avenir, je prévois de : 1. Organiser des ateliers locaux pour enseigner la documentation culturelle. 2. Créez des guides bilingues sur Meta-Wiki. 3. Fournir un mentorat aux nouveaux contributeurs.
Ces efforts visent à promouvoir la culture burundaise à travers les projets Wikimedia.
