Ibibio tribe is one of the oldest ethnic groups in Nigeria, known for its rich cultural heritage, traditions and legacies, The Ibibio ethnic group is predominantly located in Akwa Ibom State, a South -southern State in Nigeria. It's cultural heritage includes the intangible heritage which includes dances like ekombi. Festivals like Ekpene, cuisine, oral traditions, and local arts. Most of these cultural practices are at risk of extinction, because they are not documented. The challenge leading to these risks includes:
- Lack of documentation: dances, songs, oral traditionals are intangible heritages which are passed down verbally, and this makes it vulnerable to extinction;
- Endangered cultural practices:
Due to modernization, the younger generations disengage from practicing our cultural practices and if this continues it will be at risk of extinction.
- Awareness Gap:
People lack knowledge in identitfying open source platforms such and the Wikimedia platforms for cultural documentation,
- Accessibility:
These cultural festivals and performances often take place in remote locations, which makes it challenging to be documented.
- Lack of technical skills:Most of the community members and photographers lack the skills needed to document and upload content on the Wikimedia platforms.
Based on my research, many articles related to Ibibio culture, and traditions on Wikipedia lack visual content and lots of topics are still not covered.
The importance of image in an article is enormous as it provides visual context in an article, enriching the content, and increasing readers engagement.
Here are a few Ibibio practices and traditions with limited representation on the open-source platforms: Indigenous healthcare practices (the knowledge behind the use of herbs for healing and spiritual cleansing in the Ibibio tradition); Craftsmanship; Marriage Customs ( the Ibibio traditional marriage rites), Festivals, Oral Narratives and forklore.
The aim of this project is to tackle the risk of endangered cultural practices and under-representation of the Ibibio rich cultural legacies and histories which is as a result of modernization through capturing and documentation of the cultural practices such as festivals, oral narratives, craftsmanship, music, traditional marriage custom, dances, local art, proverbs, etc. This will promote our cultural wealth on the Wikimedia platforms such as commons and Wikipedia, and empower the local community on the importance of cultural preservation.
