Grant Proposal[edit]

M. Please state the title of your proposal. This will also be the Meta-Wiki page title.

Wiki Loves Philippines 2022

Q. Indicate if it is a local, international, or regional proposal and if it involves several countries? (optional)

Local

Q2. If you have answered regional or international, please write the country names and any other information that is useful for understanding your proposal.

R. If you would like, please share any websites or social media accounts that your group or organization has.
1. What is the change that you are trying to bring about and why is this important.

Through Wiki Loves Philippines 2022, we aim to rebrand and reintroduce the less popular Wiki Loves X contests in the Philippines namely Wiki Loves Fashion PH, Wiki Loves Monuments PH and introducing Wiki Loves Food PH through a series of campaigns and outreach activities within the second half of the year. By conducting an activity using one effective campaign strategy while retaining the characteristics of these campaigns at the same time, it addresses a common objective which is to increase the awareness of Wikimedia Commons as a sister project of Wikipedia as well as reducing the cost entailed in conducting similar campaigns throughout the year.

2. Describe your main approaches or strategies to achieve these changes and why you think they will be effective.

The influence of social media has proven to be significant in campaigns targeting the desired audience and prospected participants. Through Facebook which is arguably the most popular social media in the country, as well as through the use of the global campaign banner shown in Wikimedia sites, audience reach is maximized. However without outreach activities on the ground, the campaign is disconnected with the actual experience of engaging the participants, involving volunteers, as well as tapping relevant institutions for sustaining the campaign in the future. Outreach activities include photo walks, photography workshops, article writing, adding images sessions, and collaborations with photographers and relevant government agencies.

3. What are the activities you will be developing and delivering as part of these approaches or strategies?

There will be one landing page on Meta which features the component campaigns to be spread out from September to December, as follow: Wiki Loves PH - Fashion (September 1 to September 30), Wiki Loves PH - Monuments (October 1 to October 30), and Wiki Loves PH - Food (November 1 to December 30). A dedicated Facebook page will be utilized for each component campaign, using the existing pages for Wiki Loves Fashion in the Philippines and Wiki Loves Monuments PH, and creating a new one for Wiki Loves Food Philippines. These social media pages will utilized for the promotion of all component campaigns.

There will be separate winners for Wiki Loves PH - Fashion, Monuments, and Food, and only one awarding event to be conducted on 16 January 2023, in time for the Wikipedia anniversary celebration. At least one photo walk will be dedicated for each component campaign, involving different participants and photographers, three editing sessions, and collaborating with at least one relevant government agency.

4. Are your activities part of a Wikimedia movement campaign or event? If so, please select the relevant campaign below. If so, please select all the relevant campaigns from the list below. If "other", please state which.
  • Wiki Loves Fashion
  • Wiki Loves Monuments
  • Wiki Loves Food
5. Do you have the team that is needed to implement this proposal?

Wiki Loves Philippines Team includes Maffeth Opiana, Marife Altabano, Judith.arendaing, LeahLhey; with the technical support of local and global Wikipedians who have been helping our past campaigns.

6. Please state if your proposal aims to work to bridge any of the identified CONTENT knowledge gaps (Knowledge Inequity)? Select up to THREE that most apply to your work.

Philippine heritage, in particular: traditional and modern locally-designed clothes (excluding festival costumes); built heritage particularly churches, lighthouses and bridges during the Spanish period; Gabaldon buildings during the American period (to avoid deletion due to lack of Freedom of Panorama in the Philippines); and traditional and Philippine cuisine

6.1 In a few sentences, explain how your work is specifically addressing this content gap (or Knowledge inequity) to ensure a greater representation of knowledge.

This campaign will encourage contributions of quality images covering the rich intangible and tangible cultural heritage of the country, from the underdocumented local fashion industry and cuisine to the lesser known build heritage scattered all over the archipelago.

7. Please state if your proposal includes any of these areas or THEMATIC focus. Select up to THREE that most apply to your work and explain the rationale for identifying these themes.

Culture - The Philippines is one of the most diverse cultures in the world. Situated in Southeast Asia, the country was under the colonization of Spain for over 300 years with significant influence of Chinese and American cultures therefore it has a unique cultural heritage which must be illustrated on Wikimedia projects.

8. Will your work focus on involving participants from any underrepresented communities?

Yes - The participants to be involved in the campaign are from the Philippines including women participants.

9. Who are the target participants and from which community? How will you engage participants before and during the activities? How will you follow up with participants after the activities?

We have a growing community of photography enthusiasts and contributors on Commons involved in organizing similar activities in the past. We also have experiences in connecting with local photographers and individuals who are interested in taking part in the photo contests. Through collaborations with existing local contributors and networking with global Wikipedians, organizing has become easier and fun!

10. In what ways are you actively seeking to contribute towards creating a safer, supportive, more equitable environment for participants?

Frienldy Space Policy will be observed in in-person activities and online sessions.

11. Please tell us about how you have let your Wikimedia communities know about the planned activities and this proposal. Use this space to describe the processes you carried out to make the community more involved in planning this proposal. Please link the on-wiki community discussion(s) around the proposals.

The proposal will be shared with community members in relevant talk pages and social media groups.

12. Are you aware of other Rapid Fund proposals in your local group, community, or region that are being submitted and that align with your proposed project?

Yes

If yes:

12.1 Did you explore the possibility of doing a joint proposal with other leaders in your group?
N/A
12.2 How will this joint proposal allow you to have better results?
N/A

If no:

12.1 What was the reason for you deciding NOT to develop a joint proposal? How will you guarantee coordination efforts to make sure that you are not duplicating efforts and that you can maximise your work and joint impact.
The Wiki Loves Philippines Team includes the past team members of these campaigns.
13. Will you be working with other external, non-Wikimedia partners to implement this proposal? Required.

Yes

13.1 Please describe these partnerships and what motivates the potential partner to be part of the proposal and how they add value to your work.

Individual local and global Wikipedians, photography groups and government agencies harmonize well as each has a role to play in the success of the campaign. Technical support extended by seasoned contributors proved to be important as with the creativity and skills of the photographers who will become new Wikipedians. Support from the government agencies and other partners give the campaign a boost for public interest and legitimacy.

14. In what ways do you think your proposal most contributes to the Movement Strategy 2030 recommendations. Select a maximum of THREE options that most apply.

Manage Internal Knowledge, Innovate in Free Knowledge

Learning, Sharing, and Evaluation[edit]

15. What do you hope to learn from your work in this fund proposal?

We hope that the appreciation of the local heritage through Wiki Loves Philippines campaign will open doors to opportunities for unheard voices to be part of the movement, and this will increase local knowledge and close knowledge gaps. We hope that through this campaign, the Wikimedia movement in the Philippines will be sustained enough and more communities of contributors will sprout in different parts of the archipelago.
