The WikiPortraits initiative has successfully addressed a significant gap in the availability of freely-licensed, high-quality images of notable individuals across Wikipedia and Wikimedia projects. Inspired by this success, we propose the establishment of WikiPortraits Nigeria, a project dedicated to capturing and providing high-quality portraits of celebrities and distinguished individuals in Nigeria, especially focusing on women and underrepresented groups.

In Nigeria, despite the growing number of Wikimedia photo events and the increasing accessibility of photography, many notable personalities lack adequate representation through quality portraits. This absence is particularly pronounced for women and emerging talents who often remain underrepresented in visual documentation. Current media practices often prioritize commercial enterprises that do not contribute freely-licensed photographs, leaving a noticeable void in resources for Wikipedia and other Wikimedia initiatives.

WikiPortraits Nigeria will tackle this issue by providing a structured approach that enables local photographers and volunteers to navigate the credentialing process and access significant events where these individuals can be photographed. The funding from this grant, we will be able to cover important award shows, cultural festivals, and high-profile events, ensuring that we not only capture significant moments but also engage with the community to educate them about the importance of free licensing.

We will be recruiting both experienced photographers and newcomers interested in contributing to the Wikimedia movement, WikiPortraits Nigeria will foster a new cohort of artists committed to enhancing Nigeria’s representation on Wikipedia. We have a team from Wiki Photo Tour Nigeria who will serve as the driver.

Through this we will create portraits for various celebrities and use the pictures in their Wikipedia page freely licensed like for Biola Adebayo, EN:Teniola AladeseBiola Adebayo, Hilda Baci, Calabar Chic, Dolly Nwaduba, Aisha Lawal and many others who do not have pictures

Our goal is to build upon the successful models established in other countries while tailoring our approach to the unique context of Nigeria’s entertainment, literary, and cultural scenes. With your support, WikiPortraits Nigeria will promote inclusivity and strive to ensure that notable Nigerian figures are rightfully celebrated and represented across Wikimedia projects.

2. Photography Workshops: Organize training sessions for local photographers, including both experienced individuals and newcomers. These workshops will focus on skills related to portrait photography, storytelling through images, and understanding the principles of free licensing.

3. Community Engagement Session: Host events in local communities to raise awareness about the importance of free-licensed images and the role of Wikipedia/Wikimedia projects in preserving cultural heritage. This will include discussions on how to upload images and contribute to knowledge sharing.
