Indonesia is one of the world’s largest archipelagic nations, home to 84,291 villages, 30% of which are located on the island of Java, the center of life for 55% of Indonesia’s population. However, information and knowledge about these villages on Java remain extremely limited. Most entries are limited to one-paragraph stubs, and there is a severe lack of detailed information on topics such as history, geography, demographics, economy, arts and culture, sports, and tourist attractions. In fact, these villages possess distinct uniqueness, characteristics, and tourism potential. This is precisely why we are proposing this project, Wiki Suluk Desa, to establish Wikimedia projects such as the Indonesian Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons as trusted and comprehensive sources of information and visual documentation about the villages on the island of Java. we use an approach that includes: 1. Conducting research and fieldwork to gather information and high-quality photos on the history, geography, and tourism potential of villages, then uploading them to Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons to address data gaps. 2. Engaging local communities and university students and organizing Wiki Training sessions and workshops to equip them with the skills to document the potential of their own regions independently and sustainably. 3. Creating an ecosystem of skilled, active, and long-term dedicated contributors to continuously document villages that remain underrepresented in Indonesia’s digital space

The Wiki Suluk Desa project aims to document the local knowledge of villages on the island of Java on the Wikimedia platform. To achieve this, we are taking six key steps: identifying blank village articles, training local communities (such as Impala, Blidz, and History Fun Walk Malang), conducting field explorations (such as mangrove planting activities and village photo sessions), and organizing regional edit-a-thons and community gathering. Throughout the project, participants will receive direct guidance from the organizing committee, be provided with incentives and certificates, and participate in a final evaluation session to build a sustainable community of contributors. This series of activities is scheduled to take place periodically, beginning with the preparation and content mapping phase in early September 2026. The intensive fieldwork in the Greater Malang area will be carried out through several targeted regional batches. Coastal Cluster Batch 1, in collaboration with the organization Impala (September 26-27, 2026), will follow a route along the western coast through Donomulyo Subdistrict to Bantur, where the first day will be dedicated to documenting Balekambang and Modangan Beaches with participants, followed on the second day by the organizing committee independently surveying the surrounding villages. Coastal Cluster Batch 2, in collaboration with the Blidz collective (October 10-11, 2026), will shift to the central coastal route, traveling through Gedangan Subdistrict to Sumbermanjing Wetan to document Clungup Beach, Gatra Beach, and Asmara Bay with participants on the first day, followed by the organizing committee independently surveying a dozen surrounding villages on the second day. This Coastal Cluster was then concluded by Batch 3 (October 17, 2026), which took the eastern coastal route through Tirtoyudo Subdistrict to Ampelgading, with the organizing committee traveling directly to the villages of Purwodadi, Pujiharjo, and Lebakharjo. Activities continued with the Malang Urban Batch (October 23-24, 2026), where the first day consisted of independent fieldwork by the organizing committee to document exploration routes across five subdistricts in Malang City, followed on the second day by a joint agenda with participants from the History Fun Walk community, exploring the thematic villages of Jodipan and Penanggungan. To conclude the fieldwork series, the Batu Batch (October 30-31, 2026) followed the same urban model, with the organizing committee conducting surveys and documentation in Batu City on the first day, followed by a joint activity with participants on the second day to the Coban Lanang and Coban Talun nature tourism areas. Through this entire series of field batches, our primary documentation focus across the Greater Malang region covers a total of 57 urban villages in Malang City, 19 coastal villages in Malang Regency, and 19 villages in Batu City. Alongside this field schedule, expansion activities in the form of regional community gathering will be held in parallel throughout October 2026. This agenda covers the West Java region in collaboration with Wikimedia Bandung, the DIY region in collaboration with Wikimedia Yogyakarta, and the East Java region in collaboration with Wikimedia Madura, with a focus on holding Wikipedia writing community gathering to document the profiles of villages in their respective regions. Through this series of activities, we aim to achieve the following concrete outcomes: 1,000 photos on Wikimedia Commons, 100 articles on the Indonesian Wikipedia, 150 data points on Wikidata, 40 travelogues on Wikibooks, and updates to the travel guides on Wikivoyage.

The target participants for this project total 90 people from various strategic communities on the island of Java. For the Greater Malang field cluster, we are targeting 40 participants consisting of 10 members of the Impala UB nature lovers’ organization for Batch 1, 10 members of the Blidz collective for Batch 2, 10 members of the History Fun Walk Malang community for the Urban Batch, and 10 young people from the general public for the Batu Batch. Initially, we will coordinate with participants through community liaisons and hold briefing sessions as well as online pre-workshops to provide basic technical training on the Wikimedia platform and assist with bulk account creation. During the activities, we will lead the participants, along with the organizing committee, to visit pre-planned locations in each region to gather information, vital data, and photographic documentation directly in the field for upload to Wikimedia Commons through intensive mentoring, then conclude the day’s activities by providing incentives, certificates, and souvenirs to the participants. After the series of field activities is complete, as a follow-up, we will guide participants to write about their travel stories; we will then collect these writings and publish them on the Wikibooks platform as travel story articles. Meanwhile, for the regional meetup, we brought together 50 participants, including 10 Wikimedia contributors from Bandung (West Java), 10 from Yogyakarta (DIY), 20 from Madura (East Java), and 10 students from the Brawijaya University Wiki Club. Unlike the field clusters, interactions with these 50 participants focused on an intensive Wikipedia writing meetup without any on-site field trips. Meetup coordinators guided them through collaborative editing sessions to document profiles of villages in their respective regions on the Indonesian-language Wikipedia, concluding with the presentation of certificates and event souvenirs. As a long-term follow-up for both clusters, the organizing committee will maintain communication through digital groups to facilitate ongoing editing consultations and monitor the progress of all participants’ volunteer contributions via a public dashboard

1. We discussed this project idea with members of the Klub Wiki Universitas Brawijaya, a campus-based Wikimedia community actively editing Wikipedia and other Wikimedia projects. From this consultation, we learned that several UB WikiClub members, who are currently enrolled students had previously carried out similar activities on a small scale in a village as part of a community service project. Their real-world experience provided valuable insights for us in identifying technical challenges and understanding the dynamics of on-the-ground activities. 2. The core team held a series of coordination meetings, both online via Google Meet and in person at several cafes in Malang. These meetings focused on designing the program structure, developing a timeline, and carefully mapping out the project’s operational risk management. 3. We have established communication and coordination with local Wikimedia communities and volunteers, such as Wikimedia Madura, Yogyakarta, and Bandung. This collaboration has been instrumental in helping us understand the local context, identify the potential of villages that need to be highlighted, and develop specific educational approaches tailored to the characteristics of the communities in each region. 4. Based on all the feedback gathered from the series of consultations, we made several adjustments to the work plan so that program implementation in the field could proceed more effectively and be more targeted.

We hope to learn how to effectively bridge the gap between local knowledge and digital platforms through the implementation of the Wiki Suluk Desa project in Indonesia. Through this program, we aim to highlight villages with hidden potential and gain a deeper understanding of how digital literacy can be used as a tool for cultural preservation, adding important information to village profiles through regional community gathering, and community empowerment. By collaborating with students, meetup organizers, and various local communities, we hope to develop skills in gathering vital information, engaging the community, and conducting participatory documentation while uploading cultural assets to Wikimedia Commons during the fieldwork journey. We also hope to improve our ability to curate culturally sensitive content, ensuring that underrepresented local sites and village stories are accurately documented so they become better known to the public, and to compile this information into travel stories on Wikibooks once the entire series of events is complete. Through this project, we aim to identify the best ways to sustain this writing initiative, so that more young people will volunteer to add important information and showcase their villages on digital platforms on an ongoing basis.
