Main Proposal
[edit]- 1. Please state the title of your proposal. This will also be the Meta-Wiki page title.
Wiki and GLAM: Harnessing Knowledge to Foster Gender Equality
- 2. and 3. Proposed start and end dates for the proposal.
2026-01-19 - 2026-05-22
- 4. Where will this proposal be implemented? (required)
International (more than one country across continents or regions) The proposal colead is Mariana Hartenthal, a Brazilian wikimedian and GLAM professional based in Portugal. Essenam Fumey is originally from Togo and lived in Senegal for most of her life. She is currently based in Canada. Internationalization is an important aspect of this proposal, as we want to bring together gender organizers from different parts of the globe to share their experiences and knowledge. Since this proposal is a continuity of the work carried out during GLAM Wiki 2025, in terms of geography, at least Spanish-speaking, Portuguese-speaking, and French-speaking gender organizers, present in the Gender+Glam workshop (https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/GLAM_Wiki_2025/Program/Program), will be contributing to this strategic work. We would like to test starting to work on this globally (thematic global work), and as it evolves, we will understand if narrowing the focus is necessary.
- 5. Are your activities part of a Wikimedia movement campaign, project, or event? If so, please select the relevant project or campaign. (required)
Other (please specify) This proposal is not part of any Wikimedia movement campaign, project, or event, but an initiative that aims to collaborate, for example, with gender campaigns such as Art+Feminism and Visible Wiki Women, WikiLovesWomen, and WikiGap, as well as GLAM communities. These collaborations will be delineated during the course of the project.
- 6. What is the change you are trying to bring? What are the main challenges or problems you are trying to solve? Describe this change or challenges, as well as main approaches to achieve it. (required)
Only 19% of all biographies on Wikipedia are about women across languages, and women and gender diverse contributors make up around 20% of active editors. One strategy to tackle this challenge is to build relationships with institutions that steward public knowledge, and GLAMs play a central role in that sphere. The coleads of this proposal first met during the “GLAM and Gender - Harnessing knowledge and practices to shape our collective future” workshop in the GLAM Wiki 2025 conference (https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/GLAM_Wiki_2025/Program/Program). The workshop gathered organizers from around the world who shared their views on Wiki projects that tackle gender inequality in collaboration with GLAMs. They acknowledged that usually these initiatives remain fragmented, leading to missed opportunities to learn from others' experiences, and expressed the need for a more centralized space gathering Wiki + GLAM initiatives on gender; they also proposed the creation of some kind of resource to guide future initiatives. Therefore, we envisioned this strategic proposal focusing on gender organizers' work: we seek to create a place where they can learn from each other, exchange ideas, and communicate their experiences. In four months, we intend to produce enough documentation to create learning resources for gender organizers who don’t want to reinvent the wheel or repeat mistakes. Besides the public page, these resources may take the shape of a booklet, a toolkit, or another format decided by the participants. We will have a better understanding of gender + GLAM projects within Wikimedia and foresee the steps needed to move forward. Our main goal is to set the foundations for an international Community of Practice (CoP) dedicated to boosting gender focused GLAM initiatives. Our approach to achieving this goal is threefold: 1. Identify previous experiences of Wiki gender organizers who have collaborated with GLAMs in gender-equality projects. 2. Communicate these experiences to other Wiki gender organizers, and 3. Outline a roadmap to continue the implementation of the next steps to follow.
- 7. What are the planned activities? (required) Please provide a list of main activities. You can also add a link to the public page for your project where details about your project can be found. Alternatively, you can upload a timeline document. When the activities include partnerships, include details about your partners and planned partnerships.
In the first month: 1. Create a mailing list to communicate with the participants in the “GLAM and Gender - Harnessing knowledge and practices to shape our collective future” workshop (2025 GLAM Wiki conference https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/GLAM_Wiki_2025/Program/Program) who demonstrated interest in being part of the project. We gathered their contact information during the workshop. We will adapt our communication channels to the community preferences. Create a call to participation and distribute it on existing gender gap channels (gendergap@lists.wikimedia.org, WikiWomen, Gender Gap, and Wiki Women* Task Force on Telegram). 2. Create a public page about the initiative on Meta-Wiki to collect information about past and current Wiki + GLAM gender initiatives, communicate our activities, and invite collaborators. This page will be constantly fed throughout the project to create a resource that can be accessed by all Wiki organizers. 3. Interview gender organizers within Wikimedia who have led GLAM partnerships to tackle gender inequality. We will also approach GLAM professionals to hear their perspectives. The goal is to learn from their experiences. 4. Publish a blog post about our findings on Diff. This will be a response to our interviews and conversations with gender organizers in the Wiki community. The goal is to share knowledge. 5. Organize a Zoom call with participants to discuss the Glam and gender learning resource, as well as our findings. The goal is to listen and share perspectives.
In the second month: Continue feeding the public page. Continue managing communication channels (mailing list and/or other channels). Interview gender organizers within Wikimedia who have led GLAM partnerships to tackle gender inequality. Publish a blog post about our findings on Diff. Send the first version of the GLAM and Gender learning resource to the community. Organize Zoom call to discuss the first draft of the Glam and Gender learning resource and share findings so far.
In the third month: Continue feeding the public page. Continue managing communication channels (mailing list and/or other channels). Interview gender organizers within Wikimedia who have led GLAM partnerships to tackle gender inequality. Publish a blog post about our findings on Diff. Share the second version of the Glam and gender learning resource to the community, so that they can respond and suggest adjustments. Organize Zoom call to discuss the second version of the learning resource, share findings so far, and start discussing next steps after the project is over.
In the fourth month: Continue feeding the public page. Continue managing communication channels (mailing list and/or other channels). Interview gender organizers within Wikimedia who have led GLAM partnerships to tackle gender inequality. Share the final version of the Glam and Gender learning resource with the community; two weeks later, publish it on Diff blog post, our public page, and other relevant spaces within Wikimedia (f.ex., as a “help resource” on WikiProject: Women). Organize Zoom call to establish next steps after the project is over. The goal is to have a plan to continue promoting Wiki + GLAM partnerships towards gender equality. Publish the final blog post on Diff with our findings. Write the project report.
- 8. Describe your team. Please provide their roles, Wikimedia Usernames and other details. (required) Include more details of the team, including their roles, usernames, Wikimedia group, and whether they are salaried, volunteers, consultants/contractors, etc. Team members involved in the grant application need to be aware of their involvement in the project.
Mariana Hartenthal, co-lead, Mwvh Mariana Hartenthal is a Brazilian Wikimedian based in Portugal, a GLAM professional with over twenty years of experience working in museums in Brazil, England, the United States, and Portugal, and a volunteer member of Wiki Editoras LX. She is also a researcher with an M.A. in Museum Studies and a Ph.D. in Art History. She brings her expertise and experience in the intersection of GLAM and gender to this strategic proposal to advance global initiatives that can help professionals committed to narrowing the gender gap in GLAM through open knowledge resources.
Essenam Fumey, co-lead, AdjoEsse Essenam Fumey, an information science engineer, is the co-founder and a member of the Wikimedians of Senegal User Group and a Ph.D. student in Information Sciences. She is passionate about Wikidata and about bridging the gender gap between men and women in Wikimedia.
- 9. Who are the target participants and from which community? How will you engage participants before and during the activities? How will you follow up with participants after the activities? (required)
The target participants are gender organizers within the Wikimedia movement who are interested in addressing gender inequality through partnerships with GLAMs. We first engaged with potential participants during the “GLAM and Gender - Harnessing knowledge and practices to shape our collective future” workshop in the 2025 GLAM Wiki conference (https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/GLAM_Wiki_2025/Program/Program). There were 19 people in the workshop, including members of WELX, WikiDonne, and Wikiesfera. Our initial goal is to keep communicating with participants through a mailing list, but we will adapt to the needs of the group – we might create a Slack or a Telegram channel. More structured communication about our events will be published on our Meta page.
- 10. Does your project involve work with children or youth? (required)
No
- 10.1. Please provide a link to your Youth Safety Policy. (required) If the proposal indicates direct contact with children or youth, you are required to outline compliance with international and local laws for working with children and youth, and provide a youth safety policy aligned with these laws. Read more here.

- 11. How did you discuss the idea of your project with your community members and/or any relevant groups? Please describe steps taken and provide links to any on-wiki community discussion(s) about the proposal. (required) You need to inform the community and/or group, discuss the project with them, and involve them in planning this proposal. You also need to align the activities with other projects happening in the planned area of implementation to ensure collaboration within the community.
Tila Cappelletto and Lucy Hinnie organized the “GLAM and Gender - Harnessing knowledge and practices to shape our collective future” in the 2025 GLAM Wiki conference with the goal to to gather organizers who wanted to understand how GLAM partnerships can be implemented strategically to advance gender equality in Wikimedia (https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/GLAM_Wiki_2025/Program/Program). The initiative grew out of a shared desire to turn workshop ideas into action and to deepen the conversation begun at the conference. Participants agreed that they wanted to continue the conversation in a more structured way after the conference, and Mariana Hartenthal and Essenam Fumey volunteered to lead the initiative. Our intention is to consolidate a network of like-minded Wiki gender organizers, starting with the workshop participants and reaching out to communities within Wikimedia that work with gender, for example the Art+Feminism User Group.

Learning and metrics
[edit]- 17. What do you hope to learn from your work in this project or proposal? (required)
How can Wiki gender organizers contribute with GLAMs to create a more equitable open knowledge landscape? What are the challenges Wiki gender organizers have faced while implementing Wikimedia solutions in GLAM contexts? What are the success stories? What can we learn from them? Can we trace a guideline for best practices? Conversely, what went wrong? What can we learn from failures?
- 18. What are your Wikimedia project targets in numbers (metrics)? (required)
| Other Metrics | Target | Optional description |
|---|---|---|
| Number of participants | 20 | Some of the participants of the workshop "GLAM and Gender - Harnessing knowledge and practices to shape our collective future" at GLAM Wiki conference already manifested their interest to be part of the project. We will also invite other Wikimedia gender organizers from across the globe, envisioning between 5 and 10 organizers who work on gender issues. In total, we foresee between 10 and 20 people involved with the initiative, with different engagement levels. Since the blog posts, our page, and toolkit will be made public through Meta-Wiki and Diff, the information will benefit other organizers beyond those directly involved with the project. |
| Number of editors | 20 | The project focuses on Wikimedia gender organizers, who are also Wiki editors in some capacity as well, so the numbers are the same: between 10 and 20 editors involved. |
| Number of organizers | 2 | This initiative will be organized by two co-leads (Mariana Hartenthal and Essenam Fumey), and one advisor (Tila Cappelletto). However, it’s important to remember that all the participants will be Wiki organizers as well, and therefore will spearhead initiatives in their regions that will feed the development of this project. |

- Optional description for content contributions.
It is important to emphasize that this is a strategic proposal focused on gender-movement organizers' work. Our main goal is not to add new content to Wikimedia projects; still, in the medium and long term the implementation of this proposal will certainly facilitate the gender organizers' work on Wikimedia projects, increasing content and participation, usually on Wikipedia, Wikimedia Commons, and Wikidata.
- 19. Do you have any other project targets in numbers (metrics)? (optional)
