In 2024, the "Wiki for Minorities" initiative in the Arabic community achieved remarkable results. Through our efforts, we conducted an editing contest that led to the creation of over 450 new articles and an images contest, "Wiki for Minorities Images Contest 2024," which resulted in the upload of more than 1,000 images to Wikimedia Commons. Additionally, our ambassador program successfully engaged over 15 ambassadors across the region, significantly amplifying our outreach and impact.
Building on this success, we are planning an exciting series of activities for 2025. These include two dedicated edit-a-thons, one focusing on the Yazidis and the other on the Baháʼí Faith, aiming to explore their rich cultural and religious heritage. We will also organize the "Wiki for Minorities Images Contest 2025," which seeks to continue enhancing the visual representation of minority groups. Alongside these efforts, we plan to expand the Wiki Ambassadors Program to recruit and empower new ambassadors while hosting a specialized training session to attract and engage members from minority communities to contribute actively to Wikimedia projects.
The Yazidis and Baháʼí Faith represent some of the most significant minority groups in the Middle East, celebrated for their unique identities and traditions. In recognition of their global significance, the Wiki Minorities team will focus on enriching Arabic Wikipedia with content that highlights their histories, cultural contributions, and global presence. This includes uploading and sharing images that document the lives and heritage of these communities on Wikimedia Commons. These initiatives aim to preserve their identities and increase awareness and representation across Wikimedia platforms, fostering a deeper understanding and appreciation of their contributions to the cultural and social fabric of the region.
- 7. What are the planned activities? (required) Please provide a list of main activities. You can also add a link to the public page for your project where details about your project can be found. Alternatively, you can upload a timeline document. When the activities include partnerships, include details about your partners and planned partnerships.
1. Edit-a-thons: Yazidis and Baháʼí Faith In 2025, we will organize two Edit-a-thons on Arabic Wikipedia to address critical content gaps. The first will focus on creating new articles about the Yazidis and enhancing existing ones, while the second will target the Baháʼí Faith. To support participants, we will develop a comprehensive dataset identifying articles and templates currently available on English Wikipedia but missing in Arabic Wikipedia. This dataset will also prioritize key topics related to these minority groups in the Middle East. Both Edit-a-thons will recognize three winners based on the quality and impact of their contributions. A detailed datasheet on gaps and places will guide participants, ensuring the events' success. 2024 page: https://w.wiki/Axjn
2. Wiki for Minorities Images Contest 2025 Following the success of the 2024 edition, which saw the upload of over 1,000 images, we will launch the 2025 contest with an expanded focus. This version will cover significant places and minority communities, ensuring broader and more inclusive visual representation on Wikimedia Commons.

3. Training Session for Minority Engagement We will host a specialized training session to teach participants how to edit Wikipedia and upload images to Wikimedia Commons. This initiative aims to engage members of the Arab community and minority groups, empowering them to share their knowledge, culture, and heritage on Wikimedia platforms and actively contribute to closing content gaps.
4. Wiki for Minorities Ambassadors Program 2025 Building on the success of the 2024 program, which expanded our reach across the Middle East, the 2025 edition will focus on enhancing the program’s impact. By providing ambassadors with advanced training and resources, we aim to strengthen their ability to support minority representation and foster impactful contributions to Wikimedia projects.
