- An event page has been created on Wikimedia Commons to serve as the central hub for the Wiki Loves Onam 2024 photography campaign. The event page provides detailed information about the campaign, including its objectives, guidelines for participation, and the rules for submitting photographs. It also outlines the criteria for selecting winning entries and offers resources for participants to better understand the cultural significance of Onam.
- In addition to the essential details, the page has been customized from WLX templates to reflect the spirit and vibrancy of Onam. Custom modifications have been incorporated into the design of the pages, featuring visuals and elements that represent the festival's rich traditions and festive atmosphere. And also we have contributed to those templates that can be used by others while organizing similar campaigns.

Part 2: Learning
[edit]4. In your application, you outlined some learning questions. What did you learn from these learning questions when you implemented your project? How do you hope to use this learnings in the future? You can recall these learning questions below. (required)
You can recall these learning questions below: The idea behind this campaign is to bring awarness about the Wikimedia projects to the community and to bring the active contributors to Wikimedia projects through different campaigns. Through this campaign;
- I would like to learn about the how comprehensive and accurate the documentation of Onam can be done
- How many community members can be encouraged to actively participate in the campaign events (photo competitions, workshops, edit-a-thons)
- How many images after the campaign can be reused in Wikimedia projects and how many articles are directly improved through the campaign
When implementing the Wiki Loves Onam campaign, we gained valuable insights based on the learning questions outlined in my project proposal.
We learned that documenting the Onam festival comprehensively is a challenging yet rewarding process. Through the campaign, we were able to capture a wide variety of aspects related to Onam, including traditional customs, festivals, and events. By collaborating with local communities, we ensured that the content was both culturally accurate and reflective of the various regional variations of Onam. We realized that having a systematic approach to verifying cultural and historical details helped in creating a rich, well-documented repository on Wikimedia Commons. We have added uploaded the videos to WIkimedia Commons that can be used on various Wikimedia projects and langauges that depicts Onam events.
The campaign succeeded in attracting existing and new community members, with a notable number of individuals attending workshops, contributing to the photo competition, and participating in the edit-a-thons. We saw that a combination of online and offline engagement methods, such as social media promotion and on-ground events, helped in broadening the reach of the campaign. The free venue space at the college collabrating with the FOSS community over there provided for the workshops also played a key role in facilitating more face-to-face interactions, which significantly boosted community participation. In the future, building stronger local partnerships will be essential in maintaining and expanding engagement, particularly with offline events.
One of the key successes of the campaign was the reusability of the images uploaded to Wikimedia Commons. Many of these images were integrated into Wikipedia articles related to Onam, such as articles on cultural practices, flowers, events and the other festival itself. We are tracking the number of images reused in Wikimedia projects, and we noticed that several articles improved in terms of visual and informational content. However, we also realized that additional follow-up efforts is needed to further increase the number of images used in various Wikimedia projects and articles. For future campaigns, we plan to work closely with active editors to ensure that the media content is effectively integrated into relevant articles across multiple language Wikipedias.
5. Did anything unexpected or surprising happen when implementing your activities? This can include both positive and negative situations. What did you learn from those experiences? (required)
During the campaign, one of the most unexpected and positive outcomes was the overwhelming participation we have received. More than 4,000 photographs from contributors came, exceeding our initial expectations. The level of community engagement was remarkable, with photographers from various regions showcasing diverse aspects of Onam celebrations, including traditional art forms and varities of flowers.
On the other hand, we did face challenges in managing such a large volume of submissions, especially when it came to categorizing and curating the content. We learned the importance of having a structured system in place for handling large-scale contributions and the need for more volunteers to assist with reviewing and organizing the submissions. So during the workshop we worked on the categorizing and adding structured data to the media files.
6. What is your plan to share your project learnings and results with other community members? If you have already done it, describe how. (required)
We have already shared some of our initial learnings during a meetup call with the Wikimedians of Kerala User Group members.
We plan to share our final project learnings and results with the broader Wikimedia communities in the following ways:
- Diff Posts: We will publish detailed posts on Diff, highlighting the campaign’s achievements, challenges, and insights.
- Meta-Wiki Report: A comprehensive report summarizing the campaign, including statistics, key learnings, and participant feedback, will be added to Meta-Wiki. This report will be made publicly available to other organizers and community members to replicate or improve upon the model.
These efforts will ensure that our campaign's outcomes and experiences are accessible and beneficial to the wider Wikimedia community.
