Wikidata 10th Birthday Celebration at Dallung Wikimedians Community

Q. Indicate if it is a local, international, or regional proposal and if it involves several countries? (optional)

Local

R. If you would like, please share any websites or social media accounts that your group or organization has.

1. What is the change that you are trying to bring about and why is this important.

Wikidata has been the most project that Dallung Wikimedians Community has contributed to, we have organized events throughout the year to introduce participants to Wikidata and have registered a tremendous number of editors as volunteers in our community. This project seeks to:

1. Promote interaction, networking, and socialization among community members.
2. Create awareness about Wikidata and its tools
2. Recruit new editors for the various Wikimedia projects
3. Increase skills for existing editors

We will also have a session for the Birthday cake cutting.

2. Describe your main approaches or strategies to achieve these changes and why you think they will be effective.

Meetups: This approach is great for discussions and it is relevant to this event since we will have discussions about Wikidata.

Workshops/Training: This approach or strategy is used to gain new knowledge and also rekindle what they already know, that is, they refresh their minds on what they already learned. It is a very effective approach since we will have in attendance experienced editors and those that are fairly new. Ideas are shared among colleagues during workshops and in this way, participants would not only gain new knowledge but also socialize and get to know more about their co-wikimedians.

Editathon: Editathons are usually the quickest approach to use if one wants to complete a task early. It is very participatory and engages participants more. Participants will be enthused to work more as they see their co-participants doing the same. Again, this approach will allow participants to communicate among themselves and finally addresses issues among themselves that relate to the event.

3. What are the activities you will be developing and delivering as part of these approaches or strategies?

Below are the activities that we will go through as part of the approaches or strategy explained above:

We will have a training/workshop session where participants will be introduced to Wikidata to build on the skills of already existing editors and introduce Wikidata and other Wikimedia projects to newly recruited editors. This training will be held on Saturdays within the month of October 2022 leading to the birthday celebration.

An editathon session will be used to create/improve wikidata items for selected teacher training colleges in Ghana.

We will have a meetup session where we will talk about the history of Wikidata and what we have achieved as a community in contributing to Wikidata and also cut a cake to complete the event.

Here is a link to the items we will work on: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1sPTbU3vr00UTgmz2dyxLpaItf8rlfxMb8qkPOGUbQp8/edit
