We are organizers of the 2026 Wikidata Workshop, which is set up to be a workshop of the International Semantic Web Conference, to be held from 25 to 29 October 2026 in Bari, Italy. The workshop is a research workshop where papers on Wikidata are presented and discussed. The workshop is an in-person event. One problem with Wikidata is that the community of Wikidata researchers and the community of Wikidata contributors are not well connected. To help alleviate this problem we want to attract more attendees to the workshop that are Wikidata contributors but are not academics or employed in research labs, and thus foster more interaction between the two communities. As many of these contributors do not have institutional support for travel to present their work, we are requesting funds to support or partially support attendees who are active Wikidata contributors but that would otherwise have to pay their expenses themselves. This would allow such contributors to attend the workshop and enhance ties between Wikidata researchers and contributors. We have discussed having a hybrid event but we feel that in-person attendance is the best way for Wikidata contributors to learn more about the Wikidata research community and Wikidata researchers to learn more about Wikidata contributors.
We are requesting funds in this cycle, even though the workshop is not until October, so that we can advertise the availability of funds in our calls for papers. The funds will be used to provide full support for the estimated costs to one European participant and one non-European participant. We will state that either or both may be used for partial support for two participants.

We will state in our calls for papers and calls for participation that there are funds available to support attendance by Wikidata contributors with no institutional support. We will publicize the workshop agressively in the standard Wikidata channels, including Telegraph grups and the weekly Wikidata status update. We will create pages for the workshop in the Wikidata wiki. We will evaluate requests for support and determine how best to spend the funds to increase contact with the Wikidata contributors community.
We will specially target Wikidata contributors who have made contributions to Wikidata or built tools related to Wikidata that have research implications, as well as Wikidata contributors who have submitted papers to the workshop or are workshop organizers. We will encourage those who are supported to read submissions before the workshop. After the workshop we will ask them about what they learned and what the research community can do to help them and the rest of the Wikidata community. We will require that they write a report on their experiences to be published in the Wikidata wiki and reimburse their expenses only after the report is published.
We hope that these efforts will build a stronger bridge between the researchers and the general Wikidata community. This would result in more awareness of research results in the Wikidata community, more awareness of the concerns of the Wikidata community among researchers, and closer integration between the two communities.

We will target Wikidata editors who have made research-worthy contributions to Wikidata of any kind, such as building the Wikidata ontology, tools that help in interacting with Wikidata, or systems that use Wikidata. We will send out publicity for the workshop using the usual Wikidata methods, including Telegram groups, Wikidata weekly updates, and Wikidata Wikiprojects. We will encourage supported individuals to become better acquainted with research related to Wikidata by reading submitted papers before the workshop, by interacting with workshop attendees during the workshop, and by requiring them to write a report on the workshop. We will continue to interact with the targetted individuals after the workshop by publicizing the workshop proceedings to the Wikidata editors community.

We have been in contact with the Wikidata community over the last few years, recently discussing the workshop in a Wikidata office hour. We have been in contact with Wikimedia Deutschland about previous workshops in the series. As stated above, we will be publicizing the workshop this year to the Wikidata community more than it has been publicized in the past.

We hope to have workshop participants know more about the Wikidata editing community and have supported participants learn more about research related to Wikidata. We hope that these supported participants will, in turn, educate other Wikidata editors about research related to Wikidata.
