Grants:Programs/Wikimedia Community Fund/Rapid Fund/Wikidata e Ciência Aberta - Integrando dados na América Latina (ID: 22991160)/Final Report
Application type: Standard application
Part 1: Project and impact
1. Describe the implemented activities and results achieved. Additionally, share which approaches were most effective in supporting you to achieve the results. (required)
The HumaniData Project held three events over the course of three months: one webinar and two editathons. In May 14, we organized a webinar to launch the project and talk about Wikidata and Open Science in Latin America, with presentations by Tiago Lubiana and Érika Guetti Suca. The webinar was part of the month-long program of the Festa da Wikimedia em Português, and 26 people from Brazil, Portugal and Uruguay attended. On June 14, we held the first Wikidata editathon at the University of São Paulo in partnership with Prof. Dr. João Ohara, a professor of History Theory in the Department of History. On June 27, we organized the second editathon at the University of Campinas (Unicamp) in collaboration with Prof. Dr. Germana Barata, a specialist in science communication. All events were designed to promote the Wikidata database and to foster discussion on Latin American scientific production. In the case of the webinar, it was essential to connect with speakers who are already authorities in the use of Wikidata and who have a strong interest in the topic of Latin American scientific output. This was important because Latin America — and Brazil in particular — lacks a strong community of Wikidata editors. The webinar also explored the relationship between Wikidata and Open Science, which helped increase participant engagement throughout the session, resulting in very positive feedback. As for the editathons, partnerships with university professors were crucial. They provided physical space and helped engage students in the activities.

Part 2: Learning
4. In your application, you outlined some learning questions. What did you learn from these learning questions when you implemented your project? How do you hope to use this learnings in the future? You can recall these learning questions below. (required)
This Rapid Grant was extremely important for the consolidation of the HumaniData Project. The HumaniData Project was conceived with the intention of having a long-term scope, and we submitted the application with the understanding that the activities supported by the Rapid Grant would be part of the project's growth and development. We were initially concerned about the possibility of connecting issues of gender and diversity with the use of Wikidata, also considering a decolonial perspective. Today, after some time engaging with the community itself, we believe our questions have matured. We cannot talk about Wikidata without addressing how data is biased and how there is a significant lack of data representation for Latin America and Brazil. The data does not reflect our cultures. This lack of representation is also clearly reflected in the Latin American and Brazilian Wikimedia communities, where collaboration among Wikidata editors is still in a very early stage. It has also become one of our concerns to explore the possibility of building a community focused on Wikidata within Brazil and Latin America, especially considering the existing language barrier. Even so, we emphasize that Latin America and Brazil share a similar colonial experience, and that mutual strengthening between these regions is both fruitful and necessary. All of these now more developed concerns are preparing us to continue with the HumaniData Project and further solidify its impact.
5. Did anything unexpected or surprising happen when implementing your activities? This can include both positive and negative situations. What did you learn from those experiences? (required)
The Webinar event pleasantly surprised us both in terms of the number of people it reached and the level of engagement throughout the entire presentation. We believe one of the key factors for its success was inviting guest speakers and allowing them the freedom to speak about their areas of expertise, without restricting them to a specific pre-assigned topic. This approach resulted in confident and engaging presentations, and the discussion that followed was of high quality for everyone involved. Regarding the first editathon event, which took place in São Paulo on June 14th, the computer lab that our partner professor had rented was not made available by the university due to bureaucratic issues. Faced with this situation, we had to improvise a lab using the personal laptops brought by participants. All the organizers had their own laptops, along with one participant, so with five computers available, we organized participants into small groups to edit together.
This model turned out to be quite interesting, as it made participants feel more at ease, and as the event progressed, we noticed that participants with more experience naturally helped those who were facing difficulties. Since the original plan was to hold a small editing competition, but not everyone was able to use their accounts due to the limited number of computers, we extended the editathon into a small editing contest running until July 31st, allowing participants to edit from home. This also ensured that participants would engage in editing over a longer period. We handled the unexpected situation well, and the experience gave us more confidence to organize events with larger audiences or more complex logistics. As for the second editathon, we realized that the outreach did not go as planned. Since we organized the event in partnership with a professor from the local university, the idea was that human resources and outreach would also be mobilized by her. Expecting her promotional reach to be substantial, we opted for a more modest outreach on our own channels—also considering the room had a limited capacity. However, the number of attendees did not meet our expectations. We learned that we could have promoted the event more actively through our own channels while managing attendance via a registration form.
6. What is your plan to share your project learnings and results with other community members? If you have already done it, describe how. (required)
Frequent engagement with the community is very important for HumaniData, since one of its goals is to build a community of editors on Wikidata. The project’s first event, the Webinar held on May 13, was part of the event Festa da Wikimedia em Português, and served as a starting point to present the HumaniData Project and share our interests. Later on, the project was extensively discussed within the group Calibra/Calilu, now known as Organize!.
All internal team members participated in WikiCon Brasil 2025, an important event for sharing learnings and strengthening the community.Through WikiCon Brasil 2025, the team gained access to projects and presentations that improved our perspectives and understanding of long-term initiatives. It was also an important opportunity to talk with more experienced people and to better understand what the Wikimedia community expects from the Wikidata platform. The gathering also helped us understand how a network of editors between Brazil and Latin America could be possible. On July 26, the HumaniData Project was also brought into discussion at the event Let’s Connect, where we were able to exchange new perspectives with the community. Finally, for Wecudi 2025, which will take place in Mexico City, the HumaniData Project will also be presented with the goal of strengthening ties with the Spanish-speaking Latin American Wikimedia community.
Part 3: Metrics
7. Wikimedia Metrics results. (required)
In your application, you set some Wikimedia targets in numbers (Wikimedia metrics). In this section, you will describe the achieved results and provide links to the tools used.
| Target | Results | Comments and tools used | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Number of participants | 50 | 71 | Overall, we are pleased with the results achieved through the three events we organized: one webinar and two edit-a-thons. We had initially estimated a total of 50 participants across all events. By the end, we reached the following numbers: 33 people registered for the webinar, 14 participated in Edit-a-thon #1, and 24 in Edit-a-thon #2. |
| Number of editors | 30 | 31 | Participation was not only consistent but also qualitatively rich. There was strong engagement throughout the events. Attendees expressed interest in continuing to contribute to Wiki projects, discovered the potential of Wikidata, and, most importantly, learned how to use the platform in a simple and accessible way to contribute to free knowledge. |
| Number of organizers | 6 | 6 | All went according to plan with the events, the three organizers from the project were able to attend the event on USP, and Ana Carla participated remotely on the event on UNICAMP, which was hybrid. We had the support and engagement of prof. João Ohara, of the History Department on USP, and prof. Germana Barata of the Department of Scientific Journalism. |

8. Other Metrics results.
In your proposal, you could also set Other Metrics targets. Please describe the achieved results and provide links to the tools used if you set Other Metrics in your application.
| Other Metrics name | Metrics Description | Target | Result | Tools and comments |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| New Wikidata QID's | 500 | 323 | ||
| Added Wikidata Properties | 400 | 2567 | This is the ammount of statements added in total. We used the Outreach Dashboard, with manual verification of edits to certify they were valid. | |
9. Did you have any difficulties collecting data to measure your results? (required)
Yes
9.1. Please state what difficulties you had. How do you hope to overcome these challenges in the future? Do you have any recommendations for the Foundation to support you in addressing these challenges? (required)
The Outreach Dashboard tool for wikidata is still pretty buggy, the tool didn't accurately track about 80% of edits made by the participants, leading us to validante and count the edits manually.

12.2. If you have not already done so in your financial spending report, please provide information on changes in the budget in relation to your original proposal. (optional)
As we communicated at the beginning of the project, we faced an unexpected financial challenge due to banking fees, which ended up being nearly three times higher than our initial budget estimate. However, we handled this situation positively and with confidence that we could make the necessary adjustments. We conducted thorough research to find more affordable options for the coffee breaks to ensure we stayed within budget. We also purchased some of the coffee break items from supermarkets to further reduce costs. We reduced the number of coordination and facilitation hours as previously agreed. Additionally, there was no need for sign language interpretation services, so everything went smoothly in that regard as well.
