In-Person Training: A physical workshop brought together trans and non-binary participants. They were trained on the basics of Wikipedia, Wikimedia Commons, and Wikidata, with a focus on creating and improving profiles for trans individuals and activists . The project achieved significant success across multiple areas such as Community Growth & Skill Building: The project successfully introduced Wikipedia and Wikidata to Nigerian trans persons for the first time Content Creation: Across the various initiatives, participants made substantial contributions to Wikimedia projects Several key approaches were identified as being particularly effective in supporting the project to achieve its results which includes Combining In-Person and Online Strategies: The project effectively blended in-person capacity building with an online training. The physical workshop provided intensive, hands-on training in a supportive environment, while the online training extended the project's reach and sustained engagement over a longer period Prioritizing Safety and Inclusion: Creating a supportive and inclusive learning environment was paramount. By working with a trusted partner and focusing on a private, in-person event, the project was able to build the trust necessary for participants to engage and feel empowered to tell their own stories.

You can recall these learning questions below: Capacity Building: Turn trans students from passive consumers of information into active data creators. Self-Representation: Use Wikidata to map student-led trans support networks and campus activists accurately and safely. Academic Integration: Demonstrate how Wikidata skills (SPARQL, Linked Data) are valuable professional skills for students in STEM and Humanities.
By focusing on practical, hands-on sessions where participants learned to create statements, add values, and use reliable sources, the project successfully demonstrated that editing Wikidata is an accessible and valuable skill, regardless of one’s background . Future use of learnings: These insights will be used to refine future initiatives by prioritizing partnerships with trusted community organizations, creating more offline materials to support participants with limited internet access, and continuing to emphasize the empowerment that comes from self-documentation and data creation .
5. Did anything unexpected or surprising happen when implementing your activities? This can include both positive and negative situations. What did you learn from those experiences? (required)
There was strong and enthusiastic interest from the community. Despite anticipated hesitance due to stigma, many trans individuals were eager to participate and learn wikipedia, highlighting the deep need for such platforms . Negative Challenge: A significant barrier was the lack of personal laptops and unreliable internet access among participants, which hindered training and contribution . This taught the team that providing devices or creating accessible offline and mobile-friendly training materials is as important as the content itself
6. What is your plan to share your project learnings and results with other community members? If you have already done it, describe how. (required)
We are open to mentoring individuals or groups interested in replicating this model, offering guidance on partnership building, safe space creation, and participant engagement.
