Part 1: Project and impact
[edit]1. Describe the implemented activities and results achieved. Additionally, share which approaches were most effective in supporting you to achieve the results. (required)
We conducted a physical meeting in Dar es Salaam where we recruited and trained new Wikimedians on how to use Wikimedia Commons. As part of the project, we visited various areas, including Bagamoyo District in the Pwani region, where we captured photographs of different monuments. Our primary goal was to photograph Tanzanian monuments and upload them to Wikimedia Commons, creating a valuable digital archive of Tanzania's cultural heritage. Additionally, we created and edited Swahili Wikipedia articles focused on these monuments to make information accessible in the local language.
To achieve these goals, we used a combination of approaches. The physical meeting allowed us to provide training, guidance, and community-building opportunities in person. We also conducted online sessions to offer further support and improve accessibility for participants. To enhance practical skills, we organized an edit-a-thon, which encouraged active participation and helped participants apply their training directly to content creation.

Part 2: Learning
[edit]4. In your application, you outlined some learning questions. What did you learn from these learning questions when you implemented your project? How do you hope to use this learnings in the future? You can recall these learning questions below. (required)
You can recall these learning questions below: 1. Participant Engagement: How did participants perceive their involvement and interest in the campaign, and what factors influenced their level of engagement?
2. Training and Support: What types of training and support were most effective in helping newcomers develop their skills, and how did these resources impact participants' continued engagement after the events?
3. Content Contribution and Support: How successful were participants in uploading targeted pictures and creating articles during the campaign? Additionally, which support mechanisms and activities were most valued, and what challenges did participants encounter?
From our learning questions, we gained valuable insights into the effectiveness of our capacity-building efforts. The in-person workshops and events we hosted, such as the one in Dar es Salaam, successfully equipped participants with the skills and confidence needed to contribute to Wikimedia projects. Pre- and post-workshop surveys confirmed a significant improvement in participants' Wikipedia editing abilities, resulting in numerous new and improved articles. Additionally, our field visits to areas like Bagamoyo allowed us to capture and upload photographs of Tanzanian monuments and historical sites to Wikimedia Commons, enriching the platform with local cultural content.
Our use of online forums, social media groups, and virtual sessions was also instrumental in fostering collaboration, with participants actively sharing resources and providing feedback. This community engagement contributed to sustained participation and a long-term increase in Wikipedia content creation, as shown by the continued contributions from participants even after the Challenge. Going forward, we plan to apply these insights by refining training sessions and continuing to use a blend of in-person and online methods to maintain an active and connected community.
5. Did anything unexpected or surprising happen when implementing your activities? This can include both positive and negative situations. What did you learn from those experiences? (required)
During implementation, we were positively surprised by participants' enthusiasm during field visits, especially in Bagamoyo, where capturing photos of monuments for Wikimedia Commons deepened their connection to Tanzania's heritage. This showed us the value of on-site learning in boosting engagement.
However, connectivity issues slowed real-time uploads during workshops, so we adapted by focusing on offline content creation. From this, we learned the importance of flexible plans and having offline resources ready to ensure smooth progress despite technical limitations.
6. What is your plan to share your project learnings and results with other community members? If you have already done it, describe how. (required)
To share our project learnings and results with the community, we plan to utilize both online and in-person platforms. We will publish detailed summaries and insights on Wikimedia platforms, including Diff and Meta-Wiki, to reach a broader Wikimedia audience. Social media channels, like WhatsApp groups and Instagram, will also be used for quick updates and to engage the local community directly. Additionally, we aim to host follow-up workshops and online webinars, where participants can discuss their experiences, share tips, and encourage new contributors.
So far, we have shared preliminary results in local WhatsApp groups and during community meet-ups, allowing for immediate feedback and further learning. This ongoing engagement has helped keep community members informed and motivated to participate.
