Wikimedia Project contributions in Nigeria has been dominated by Males, according to the survey conducted by the Wikimedia User Group Nigeria in 2023, 62.3% are males while 37.7% are females. Coming down to Northeastern Nigeria where there is a wide gap between male and female literacy, there is a dearth of women Wikipedia volunteers. Similarly, in Dukku local government where I currently live, there are only few female wikimedians.
Dukku is one of the largest local governments in Northeastern Nigeria, it has an estimated population of 207 190. In addition to that, it also has a university, college of health sciences and different writing groups in the length and breadth of the local government. However, there are very few editors working on Wikimedia projects and there is currently no initiatives that aim to spread awareness of Wikimedia projects in the area.
As a woman and a Wikipedian who have the opportunity to have undergone a six month fellowship training with the African Wiki Women, I feel compelled to launch the first Wikimedia promotion campaign and training in Dukku to recruit new editors especially women editors. The reason for this is to close the gender gap on Wikimedia projects, more women volunteers are required and I have put together a highly experienced team whom we can work together to train, build and the motivate the new editors to contribute to different Wikimedia Projects.
Finally, unlike other communities where the Wikimedia community has been present and has conducted a number of training sessions, there has never been any training or similar activity in Dukku to inform people about Wikimedia projects and how they might contribute to them. If accepted, the project will contribute to the creation of a sustainable Wiki group in Dukku that will serve as a continuous mentoring platform to the newly recruited members.
Approaches
Recruitment and Training: The project lead will leverage on youth and students organization for the recruitment of the participants across Dukku Local Government. I and my team will train 40 members in Dukku local government with focus on Wikimedia Commons, editing Wikipedia articles, and Wikidata.
Gender Gap Promotions: To contribute to closing the masculine dominations of Wikipedia editors, the participants will include 70% women and 30% men who are mostly students and youths from different institutions, clubs and Association within the target community. Also, the project would be tailored toward given priority to notable women articles with aim towards balancing the contents on Wikipedia and it's sisters' projects.
Adding or improving local contents: We want to expand the representation of Nigeria's culture and history on Wikipedia and other Wikimedia projects by adding or updating local content from Nigeria on English Wikipedia and Wikipedia Commons. We would urge editors to write and enhance articles about Nigeria, its people, culture, and history via data insertion (Wikidata), editing articles (Wikipedia) or snapping of monumental pictures in the local government (Commons Wiki).
Creating a community of Wikimedia Editors in Dukku: For the sustainability of the project, we will establish a community and continue to parter with local organisations for the improvement of Wikmedia projects.
Integration into the Africa Wiki Women: As an ambassador to the African Wiki Women, I will integrated the female participants into the community where they will also be mentored.

The Project will run for a period of two months and will consist of six different sessions.
1. Recruitment and needs assessment forms: Since we are dealing with complete new editors who might not have any experience when it comes to Wikimedia project editing, we will create a google form where interested people will fill and a need assessment would be included to know the area to concentrate on.
2. Two online sessions: After the recruitment, there would be two online sessions for the participants. The online sessions will be to introduce the participants to the Wikimedia projects, assist them with account creation and introduce them to some of the do’s and don’ts of the Wikimedia foundation projects.
3. Two physical trainings: The physical trainings will focus on improvement of Wikipedia and Wikidata articles/items and also teach them on the proper way of contributing Commons Wiki.
4. Office hours: There will be two office hours as check in calls for the new participants to address any of the issues they might be facing while editing.
5. Creating a group of Wikimedia editors in Dukku: There will be a sustainable platform where the recruited participants will continue to be mentored.
6. Integration into Africa Wiki Women: The participants that will be recruited will be integrated into the African Wiki Women group where they will continue to be mentored globally.

Ojewuyib is the project lead and member of the host community. She is an experienced Wikimedia projects editor, a trainer and the ambassador of African Wiki Women. She has participated in many Wikimedia Projects such as Afro sport contest, Wikimedia Promotions in Akure, Wikimedia Promotions in Federal Polytechnic Kaltungo. She will be the project coordinator.
Ibjaja055 is an experienced Wikimedia projects editor. He was the 2023 Wikimedia User Group Nigeria Editor of the Year. He is a currently a new page reviewer and auto-patroller on the English Wikipedia. He has close to 25,000 edits across Wikimedia foundation projects and has created hundreds of articles around African Academics and scientists including good articles. Vanderwaalforces is an experienced Wikimedia projects editor. He has close to 80, 000 edits across Wikimedia foundation projects with half coming from the English Wikipedia. He has contributed to several good articles and Featured lists.
