Rapid Fund Final Report

Application type: Standard application

Part 1: Project and impact

1. Describe the implemented activities and results achieved. Additionally, share which approaches were most effective in supporting you to achieve the results. (required)

During the reporting period, several activities were carried out to recruit, train, and support new Wikimedia editors in Dukku, with a strong emphasis on gender balance and local content improvement.

Recruitment and Needs Assessment:

A Google Form was developed and circulated across youth and student networks within Dukku Local Government. This enabled the recruitment of interested participants and helped us assess their prior knowledge and specific needs. The needs assessment guided our training focus, ensuring that sessions addressed the most crucial skill gaps.

One Online Training Session:

After recruitment, we conducted one virtual introductory sessions. These sessions introduced participants to Wikimedia projects, supported them in creating user accounts, and explained the basic rules, guidelines, and expectations of the Wikimedia Foundation projects. This foundation prepared participants for more advanced, hands-on training.

One Physical Training:

We organized one in-person training in Dukku, which focused on practical editing skills. Participants were trained on improving Wikipedia articles, adding or refining statements on Wikidata, and contributing photographs to Wikimedia Commons. These sessions resulted in improved confidence and active contributions from participants, especially regarding local Nigerian content.

Office Hours (Check-in Calls):

One office-hour session was held as follow-up support. These served as troubleshooting moments where new editors sought clarification, received guidance, and resolved challenges encountered while editing. This support strengthened retention and motivated continued engagement.

Creation of a Wikimedia Editors Group in Dukku:

A sustainable local community group was established to keep participants connected, informed, and continuously mentored. This group will remain a long-term platform for collaboration and skill growth among newly trained editors.

Integration into the Africa Wiki Women Network:

In line with the project’s gender-inclusion objective, all female participants were integrated into the Africa Wiki Women group. This has opened doors for continuous learning, mentorship, and involvement in global Wikimedia initiatives.

Most Effective Approaches

Several approaches proved highly effective in achieving these results:

Recruitment Through Youth and Student Networks:

Leveraging community-based organisations, student associations, and youth clubs in Dukku proved to be the most effective recruitment strategy. It ensured wide reach, quick mobilization, and participation from motivated young people.

Gender Gap Promotion Strategy:

Intentionally allocating 70% of recruitment slots to women significantly advanced our gender-balance objective. This approach empowered more women to gain editing skills and contributed to reducing male dominance in Wikimedia spaces.

Focus on Local Content Creation:

Encouraging participants to work on Nigerian topics—particularly local history, culture, and notable women—increased their motivation and improved the relevance of their contributions. This approach also enriched Wikimedia projects with underrepresented content from Northeastern Nigeria.

Community Building for Sustainability:

Establishing a Wikimedia editors’ group in Dukku ensured continuity beyond the training period. The group structure encourages collaboration, peer learning, and long-term growth of the local editing community.

Integration into Africa Wiki Women:

Linking trained female participants to a wider continental network created an extended support system. This boosted their confidence, exposed them to global Wikimedia opportunities, and ensured sustained mentorship.
