Wikimedia Awareness and Training in Federal college of Education (Technical).

- R. If you would like, please share any websites or social media accounts that your group or organization has.
- 1. What is the change that you are trying to bring about and why is this important.
The aim of this project is to raise awareness of Wikimedia projects in FCE (T) community among the librarians and library students of the Federal college of Education and promote active participation of librarians( who are also academics) and library students of the institution in the forth coming 1lib 1ref. Wrong information can be misleading and as librarians, they are the custodians of information and will contribute in adding credible and reliable sources to Wikipedia articles. This will go a long way to engendering Wikimedia projects - Wikipedia - in school as well as to emphasize the importance of open education resources, adoption, and utilization in teaching and learning. Furthermore, this project will help attract more Academics to open access/knowledge initiatives and contribution of quality encyclopedic contents, references (1Lib1Ref), and GLAM (history, culture, tradition, languages, and valuable images) to Wikipedia and Commons to enhance the visibility (openness) and access to information. The overall plan and focus is on the college community, the main targets are librarians who are also academic members, library students also get involved. More so, this project will help recruit and increase the participation of librarians and library students in the Northeast part of Nigerian for this year's 1Lib 1Ref, because there has been little participation of librarians and library students from this part of the Nigeria actively participating in 1Lib 1 Ref.
- 2. Describe your main approaches or strategies to achieve these changes and why you think they will be effective.
The main approaches/strategies are: Creating Awareness: awareness drive will be initiated within the school community - librarians, and library students. Recruiting and Training: members of the school community will be recruited and trained Edit-a-thon: this will enable the recruited and trained participants to put the knowledge acquired to use - hands- on experience.
- 3. What are the activities you will be developing and delivering as part of these approaches or strategies?
I will be developing and delivering two online and two off-line trainings which will last for a month and will be carried out as follows: Awareness Drive: This is necessary to engender Wikimedia projects among the school community. Various stakeholders and department will be visited within the schools. Posters and flyers will be utilized for far reaching promotion and recruitment amongst the students.
Training: After the awareness drive and recruitment of librarians and students, training sessions will follow both online and offline to ground the prospective participant in basics and advanced contribution activities to Wikimedia projects - Wikipedia, Commons, Wikidata, etc. The trainings days will be as follow:
Day 1: This session will be an online session which will serve as an onboarding session. An experienced Wikimedian and academician will be handling this session. This will help to engender Wikimedia projects to the academic community and the need for their involvement as academicians.
Day 2: this will entail "how to navigate Wikipedia space and safety tips". Prospective participants will be guided to creating Wikipedia account, confirming their account, registering on the dashboard and signing up on the project page. Furthermore, they will be exposed to basic editing activities.
Day 3: this serves as the first physical meeting, the participants will be taught how to create new articles from scratch, contribute to Wikidate and Commons. Edit-a-thon: As stated earlier, there will be a edit-a-thon for the participants to put the knowledge acquired in use. At the end of the edit-a-thon, certificate of participation and branded souvenir will be provided to the top contributors.
Day 4: this will be closing session of the month long training and edit-a-thon where certificates of participation will be given to participants and branded souvenir for top contributors.
