Akwa Ibom State University (AKSU) is located in the South-South region of Nigeria. Its student population is estimated between 10,000 and 14,999. Students are a young and enthusiastic group, and it’s good to see many of them across Nigerian universities actively contributing to Wikimedia projects. Some students have even created Wikimedia clubs in their various schools across Nigeria, Students at Akwa Ibom State University are not even aware that they can contribute to Wikipedia and its sister's projects, and as a volunteer who has been contributing to Wikimedia projects, I believe this is a good opportunity and time to start a project that will get more students in my region involved in the Wikimedia movement.
This project intends to address three main challenges:
1. Lack of Awareness and Skepticism: A large number of students are unaware of how Wikimedia projects function. I once introduced Wikipedia volunteering to a student, and her initial response was skeptical, she wasn't sure if it was the real Wikipedia or something else entirely. It was at this moment I realized a gap in awareness and understanding that is common across the university.
2. Correcting the impression about Wikipedia usage in academic work: There is this view among lecturers in Nigeria that Wikipedia is not a reliable source of information for academic work, this leads to discouragement from students using it in their academic work. To correct this impression, Lectures will be enlightened that while students are advised not to cite Wikipedia, which is because it is a secondary source; the value of using Wikipedia in academic work, lies in the references and citations in each Wikipedia article which easily link them to the primary sources to be cited in their academic work.
3. Improved content about Akwa Ibom state: Content about Akwa Ibom State are not up to date (histories, core values governing the state, it's languages, cultural practices, people, etc) on Wikipedia and its sister's projects. This offer an opportunity for students at Akwa Ibom State University to document, share, and preserve their own heritage through platforms like Wikipedia, Wikidata, and Wikimedia Commons.
The change this project will bring:
This project seeks to create a community of skilled and enthusiastic Wikimedia contributors within Akwa Ibom State University who will be confident in editing and writing content, by raising awareness about Wikimedia projects, addressing skepticism, training and equipping students with practical skills, thereby transforming them to active contributors and advocates of free knowledge.
Approach:
Awareness Training: We will organize and facilitate engaging sessions to introduce students to Wikimedia projects, with hands-on demonstrations to show them how to edit, create articles, and participate in Wikimedia campaigns.
Capacity Building: Students will be trained as a community and we will provide them with mentorship, training and resources to contribute to Wikimedia projects before and after the training.
Engaging Lectures: We will have a session of conversations with open-minded lecturers about the advantage of Wikipedia in academic work, and also address the issue of disapproval of students using Wikipedia in their academic work, by highlight examples where Wikimedia is used as a research and educational tool. We will also introduce them to other Wikimedia projects such as Wikisource, and how it works, highlighting the importance of projecting their research papers and academic work to a global audience.
This project also seeks to address skepticism about contributing to Wikipedia and its sister's projects, bridging the awareness gap, training and empowering the Akwa Ibom State University community to contribute to Wikimedia projects and also build a vibrant community of contributors.
