Part 2: Learning

4. In your application, you outlined some learning questions. What did you learn from these learning questions when you implemented your project? How do you hope to use this learnings in the future? You can recall these learning questions below. (required)

You can recall these learning questions below: Did the project create awareness about the Wikimedia movement and its projects in Akwa Ibom State University?

Did the project engage students and lecturers at the Akwa Ibom State University in active contributions?

Did the project address concerns regarding skepticism about contributing to Wikipedia and its sister projects?

Did the project help change the perception where lecturers discouraged their students from using Wikipedia for school projects?

Did the project create a Wikimedia community of editors in the Akwa Ibom State University?

Did the project create awareness about the Wikimedia movement and its projects in Akwa Ibom State University? Yes. The project introduced students and lecturers to the Wikimedia movement and its various projects, many of which they had little or no prior knowledge about. This awareness helped participants understand the opportunities Wikimedia provides for knowledge sharing. I remember asking them if they knew they could contribute to Wikipedia, and their response was: No! Both students and Lecturers learned more about the Wikimedia Foundation and its projects.

Did the project engage students and lecturers in active contributions? Yes. Both students and a few lecturers were actively engaged during the training and contributed to Wikipedia and other projects. While the level of participation varied, it showed growth potential.

Did the project address concerns regarding skepticism about contributing to Wikipedia and its sister projects? Yes. Before the project, many students and lecturers expressed doubt about the reliability and openness of Wikipedia. We had conversations on this topic after clarification; they gained a better understanding of the review process, citation standards, and the value of contributing accurate information.

Did the project help change the perception that lecturers discouraged students from using Wikipedia for school projects? Yes. Some lecturers acknowledged that while Wikipedia may not be accepted as a direct reference in academic work, it is a valuable starting point for research and information gathering. We explained that Wikipedia is a secondary source that compiles information with references to primary sources. Therefore, it should not be cited directly but rather used as a guide to access original materials. This understanding also showed them how Wikipedia can make research easier by providing quick access to relevant primary sources on a particular topic.

Did the project create a Wikimedia community of editors in the Akwa Ibom State University? Yes, but it is still at an early stage. We created a WhatsApp group to serve as a communication and mentorship hub. Since the students are currently writing exams, activities in the group are on hold. However, after the exams, we plan to resume with virtual sessions to provide guidance and help them grow into an active Wikimedia community.

5. Did anything unexpected or surprising happen when implementing your activities? This can include both positive and negative situations. What did you learn from those experiences? (required)

All activities were implemented well. The turnout of the students during both virtual and physical sessions was a good one.

6. What is your plan to share your project learnings and results with other community members? If you have already done it, describe how. (required)

I plan to share the project learnings and results through social media platforms to reach a broader audience. Within Akwa Ibom State, I will engage the local Wikimedia community. I also intend to write a diff blog post highlighting the key outcomes, challenges, and lessons learned from the project, so that other Wikimedians can learn from it.
