Wikimedia Awareness in Pen Resource University

Q. Indicate if it is a local, international, or regional proposal and if it involves several countries? (optional)

Q2. If you have answered regional or international, please write the country names and any other information that is useful for understanding your proposal.

R. If you would like, please share any websites or social media accounts that your group or organization has.

1. What is the change that you are trying to bring about and why is this important.

Pen Resource University is a prestigious tertiary institution in Northeastern Nigeria, home to thousands of students and hundreds of staff members. The university boasts cutting-edge facilities and equipment that are among the best in Nigeria. However, there is a lack of trust in Wikipedia projects and a complete lack of editors within the institution. The Wikimedia Awareness project aims to address these issues.

Firstly, we aim to establish trust in Wikipedia and its sister projects within the university. Our team of experienced Wikimedia editors will launch online and offline campaigns within the institution, emphasizing the authenticity and notability of Wikimedia projects. By doing so, we hope to inspire trust in the projects and encourage their use as legitimate sources of information.

Secondly, we aim to engage students and lecturers in contributing to Wikimedia projects. Many members of the university community believe that these projects are carried out by machines or robots and that the information they provide is static and unchangeable. The project will promote awareness of how to contribute and use Wikimedia projects, especially for research purposes, generating interest and inspiring participants to learn how to enhance the content of these platforms.

Thirdly, we aim to create sustainable Wikimedia communities within the institution. We will train students and staff on how to contribute to these projects and provide a platform for them to come together to discuss the challenges they face while contributing to Wikimedia projects and to find solutions to these issues.

We will partner with the Hausa Wikimedians User Group, an active user group in the region, to ensure the sustainability of the project. Additionally, we will create a club within the university that will be a unit of the Hausa Wikimedians User Group, fostering a sense of community among the university's members.

2. Describe your main approaches or strategies to achieve these changes and why you think they will be effective.

The main approaches or strategies that will be used to achieve Wikimedia Awareness in Pen Resource University include:

Creating awareness about Wikimediaa projects in Pen Resource University: This will involve organizing awareness campaigns to educate the university community about the Wikimedia projects and their significance. Through these activities, we aim to increase the understanding of students, faculty, and staff about the importance of open access to knowledge and the role Wikimedia plays in achieving this goal.

Training and recruiting new editors in Pen Resource University: To increase the number of editors contributing to Wikimedia projects, we will provide training and support to 50 individuals from the University. This will involve training on how to edit Wikipedia articles, use Wikimedia Commons, and other relevant skills.

Adding or improving local content in Nigeria on English Wikipedia and Wikipedia Commons: We aim to increase the representation of Nigeria's culture and history on Wikipedia and other Wikimedia projects. To achieve this, we will encourage editors to create and improve articles related to Nigeria, its people, culture, and history. We will also encourage the use of images and media files on Wikimedia Commons to enhance the visual representation of Nigeria.

Creating a community of Wikimedia Editors in Pen Resource University as a unit of Hausa Wikimedians UserGroup: We plan to establish a community of Wikimedia editors in Pen Resource University. The community will provide a platform for editors to collaborate, share knowledge and experience, and support each other in their efforts.

Lastly, this is the link to the training resource that will be used during the events.

3. What are the activities you will be developing and delivering as part of these approaches or strategies?

The Wikimedia Awareness program at Pen Resource University will consist of five sessions. The university is already aware of the proposed project, and with the Project Lead's membership of the Law Students Association of Nigeria, which is also present in the university, the following approaches can be achieved:

Awareness Trips - Sensitization and awareness trips will be undertaken to tour the premises of the university, academic offices, faculties, lecture halls, and cafeterias, explaining the activities of Wikipedia and its sister projects. Fliers and handbills containing information about Wikipedia and its sister projects will be distributed. The university has already expressed eagerness to welcome the project, and we will identify only fifty (50) participants for the project.

Online onboarding session - This will introduce the newly recruited Wikimedia editors to the Wikimedia projects and its activities. Account creation and minor editing issues will be addressed during the session, which will be conducted via Zoom/Google Meet. The link will be publicized.

First Physical Workshop - This will involve one-on-one interaction with the fifty recruited participants. In the session, practical sessions will be held on how to improve Wikipedia and its sister projects.

Second Physical Workshop - Participants who have now gained an idea of how to edit will be given the chance to explain the problems they are facing, and the issues will be addressed by the team.

Second Online Session and Edit-a-thon - This will be another training session aimed at fine-tuning the editing skills of new and existing editors. After the training, there will be a three-week Edit-a-thon where winners and participants will be awarded a certificate of excellence each. Additionally, the Pen Resource University Wikimedia Community will be created and sustained.

4. Are your activities part of a Wikimedia movement campaign or event? If so, please select the relevant campaign below. If so, please select all the relevant campaigns from the list below. If "other", please state which.

5. Do you have the team that is needed to implement this proposal?
  • Usmanagm: The project lead and facilitator, Usmanagm, is a seasoned contributor to Wikimedia projects who has made a significant impact by training and recruiting more editors in Northern Nigeria. He served as the project lead for Wikimedia Awareness in Akko and has been a trainer, volunteer, and facilitator in numerous projects. In addition to his work on Wikipedia, he is also a journalist, writer, development expert, and founder of many mentoring platforms in Nigeria, including the widely popular Jewel Writing Workshop, an annual mentoring program.

To achieve the project's objectives, the project will leverage the proximity of experienced facilitators in the region who are the closest to the target university. Additionally, Yahuzaishat has been included as the Communication Officer to coordinate and moderate online sessions, including ensuring that participants in the WhatsApp group are up-to-date with program updates. There is a shortage of experienced facilitators in the region, and we always aim to raise not only active editors but highly capacitated and experienced facilitators to bridge this gap. Yahuzaishat, the best participant from the previous project, Wikipedia Awareness in Akko, is one of these highly competent editors identified.""

  • Yahuzaishat: Yahuzaishat, the Communication Officer, is an experienced Wikimedia editor and one of the dedicated and hard-working editors in the Northeast region who are building their capacity to bridge the gap of experienced facilitators in the region. He was identified during the Wikimedia Awareness in Akko and has since contributed immensely to Wikimedia projects, with thousands of global edit contributions. He is creative and possesses strong English and Hausa speaking and writing skills. His speech on Wikimedia projects during Wikipedia Awareness in Akko: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P8wGRyS1TX8. Yahuzaishat will moderate sessions and keep participants' WhatsApp groups up-to-date with the program's every detail and step.
  • Gwanki: Gwanki is a volunteer and experienced Wikimedia editor and administrator on the Hausa Wikipedia. He has also organized and facilitated several Wikipedia Awareness projects in Northern Nigeria and will serve as a facilitator during the training program.
  • Musaddam Idris: Musaddam Idriss, the third facilitator, is a volunteer and experienced Wikimedia projects editor who has successfully executed various Wikimedia projects in Northern Nigeria. He is a co-founder of the Fulfulde Wikimedia User Group Nigeria and will be a facilitator for the project, welcoming participants interested in the Fulfulde Wikipedia.
  • Volunteers: Two volunteers from the student body will be identified to assist in every possible like during refreshment time, hall setting.
6. Please state if your proposal aims to work to bridge any of the identified CONTENT knowledge gaps (Knowledge Inequity)? Select up to THREE that most apply to your work.

Language, Cultural background, ethnicity, religion, racial

6.1 In a few sentences, explain how your work is specifically addressing this content gap (or Knowledge inequity) to ensure a greater representation of knowledge.

Our work will focus on creating and improving articles related to Nigerian culture, religion, and language on Hausa Wikipedia, Fulfulde Wikipedia, and English Wikipedia, as the university is made up of diverse individuals from different regions, ethnic groups, and religious backgrounds. We will ensure a greater representation of knowledge and promoting inclusivity and diversity within the Wikimedia projects, as well as bridge the knowledge gap and promoting equity in knowledge representation.

7. Please state if your proposal includes any of these areas or THEMATIC focus. Select up to THREE that most apply to your work and explain the rationale for identifying these themes.

Education, Culture, heritage or GLAM

8. Will your work focus on involving participants from any underrepresented communities?

Ethnic/racial/religious or cultural background, Linguistic / Language, Age

9. Who are the target participants and from which community? How will you engage participants before and during the activities? How will you follow up with participants after the activities?

The target participants for our project are the members of the university community, and no prior experience with Wikimedia is necessary to participate. We will engage potential participants through various means, including interactions with the student union, associations, faculty officers, and lecture halls. During the project, we will actively facilitate the training, ensuring that participants gain the necessary knowledge and skills to contribute to Wikipedia and sister projects. Additionally, we will monitor the three-week online edit-a-thon to prevent any vandalism or misinformation.

The project will contribute to the development of Wikipedia, Wikidata, and Wikimedia Commons by building knowledge and creating more active editors, as well as improving the quality of photo uploads. To ensure sustainability, we will create a WhatsApp group called Pen Resource Wikimedia Community, where participants can stay in touch, discuss Wikimedia projects, and stay updated on the latest events and workshops. Additionally, we will welcome the Pen Resource University Wikimedians Community into the Hausa Wikimedians User Group to ensure continued engagement and participation in Wikimedia projects.

10. In what ways are you actively seeking to contribute towards creating a safer, supportive, more equitable environment for participants?

We will strictly adhere to the Wikimedia friendly space policy before the event starts. We are also taking active measures to create a safe, supportive, and equitable environment for all participants. This includes providing a welcoming and inclusive atmosphere. We are also providing the necessary resources and materials to assist participants and addressing any concerns or issues that may arise during the activities.

11. Please tell us about how you have let your Wikimedia communities know about the planned activities and this proposal. Use this space to describe the processes you carried out to make the community more involved in planning this proposal. Please link the on-wiki community discussion(s) around the proposals.

I have informed the Hausa Wikimedia Group via WhatsApp and am in touch with the key stakeholders of the User Group. I will keep them constantly and consistently informed throughout the project delivery process. The Northeast region is emerging, and it is crucial that any activity in the area be supervised by the Hausa Wikimedians User Group for sustainability, particularly to enhance the growth of the community. I will also request that either the Chairman or any stakeholder of the Hausa Wikimedians User Group speak to participants about the group during any online session so that by the time the Pen Resource University Wikimedia Community is established as a unit of the Hausa Wikimedians User Group, it will be easier to sustain the community. As an active member of the Hausa Wikimedians User Group, there is no doubt that I am committed to the sustainability of the project.

Learning, Sharing, and Evaluation[edit]

15. What do you hope to learn from your work in this fund proposal?

Did the project create community awareness about Wikimedia projects in Pen Resource University? Did the project train new editors to have the required skills for editing Wikimedia projects? Did the participants contribute content to Wikipedia and its sister projects? Did the project create a sustainable group of Wikimedia editors in Pen Resource University? Did the project identify potential facilitators? (The Northeast region lacks experienced facilitators, and not every editor can be a facilitator. Therefore, the project should identify potential facilitators, as was done in the previous project where Yahuzaishat was identified. This will also help existing user groups in the region, such as the Hausa Wikimedians User Group, to have more competent facilitors.

With the delivery of this project, we will have more than enough people to carry out a series of activities as a group (not individual) in the Northeast. Part of the learning process is to also conduct a post-program survey.
