Rapid Fund Final Report

Application type: Standard application

Part 1: Project and impact

1. Describe the implemented activities and results achieved. Additionally, share which approaches were most effective in supporting you to achieve the results. (required)

A new tool for adding structured data on Wikimedia Commons, named Cat2Data, was created, by Naresh Kumar Babu, with supervision by me.

2. Documentation of your impact. Please use space below to share links that help tell your story, impact, and evaluation. (required)

Share links to:

  • Project page on Meta-Wiki or any other Wikimedia project
  • Dashboards and tools that you used to track contributions
  • Some photos or videos from your event. Remember to share access.

You can also share links to:

  • Important social media posts
  • Surveys and their results
  • Infographics and sound files
  • Examples of content edited on Wikimedia projects

The page for this tool - including instructions for installation and usage, and demo video - can be found here:

https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/User:TechieNK/Cat2Data

And the actual code can be found here:

https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/User:TechieNK/Cat2Data.js

Additionally, share the materials and resources that you used in the implementation of your project. (required)

For example:

  • Training materials and guides
  • Presentations and slides
  • Work processes and plans
  • Any other materials your team has created or adapted and can be shared with others

Part 2: Learning

4. In your application, you outlined some learning questions. What did you learn from these learning questions when you implemented your project? How do you hope to use this learnings in the future? You can recall these learning questions below. (required)

You can recall these learning questions below: We will of course learn whether the desired tool is technically feasible, although I'm fairly sure that it is. The bigger question, in my mind, is how widely this structured data-adding tool will be used by Wikimedia Commons editors. Hopefully the presence of this tool, as well as the relatively new Commons Walkabout website (https://commonswalkabout.org), will lead to a positive feedback loop, where more structured data in Commons leads to more browsing of the structured data, which in turn leads more people to add structured data to fill in the existing gaps, etc.

Creating the tool was indeed technically feasible, although we ran into some of the usual challenges in software development.

The bigger question - whether and how much the tool will get used - is unknown. Having tried it myself, I find the usage of Cat2Data somewhat addictive, so I wouldn't be surprised if the tool catches on among at least some of the editors who are interested in structured data.

5. Did anything unexpected or surprising happen when implementing your activities? This can include both positive and negative situations. What did you learn from those experiences? (required)

There were certainly unforeseen challenges during the development process, but nothing truly unexpected, I would say.

6. What is your plan to share your project learnings and results with other community members? If you have already done it, describe how. (required)

We have already begun to publicize this tool, including demoing it a t a conference, posting to the commons-l mailing list and linking to it in various places on Commons itself, but more work remains to be done in publicizing it, especially on social media.

Part 3: Metrics

7. Wikimedia Metrics results. (required)

In your application, you set some Wikimedia targets in numbers (Wikimedia metrics). In this section, you will describe the achieved results and provide links to the tools used.

Target Results Comments and tools used
Number of participants 1 1
Number of editors 500 8 This is the number of Commons users who currently have the Cat2Data script loaded in their common.js file. Of course, this number can (and hopefully will) increase in the future.
Number of organizers 1 1
