American University of Nigeria (AUN) is located in the North East region of Nigeria, with a student population estimated between 15,000 and 18,999. These young and enthusiastic students are eager to contribute to Wikimedia projects, and some have already formed Wikimedia clubs in their schools across Nigeria. However, many students at AUN are unaware that they can contribute to Wikipedia and its sister projects. As a volunteer who has been contributing to Wikimedia projects, I believe this presents a great opportunity to start a project that will engage more students in my region in the Wikimedia movement.

This project aims to address three main challenges:

1. *Lack of Awareness and Skepticism*: Many students are unaware of how Wikimedia projects function, and some are skeptical about contributing. I once introduced Wikipedia volunteering to a student, and her initial response was uncertain, highlighting the need for awareness and understanding. 2. *Correcting the Impression about Wikipedia Usage in Academic Work*: Some lecturers in Nigeria view Wikipedia as an unreliable source for academic work, discouraging students from using it. However, the value of Wikipedia lies in its references and citations, which can lead students to primary sources. We plan to enlighten lecturers on the benefits of using Wikipedia in academic work. 3. *Improving Content about Adamawa State*: Content about Adamawa State is outdated on Wikipedia and its sister projects. This project offers an opportunity for AUN students to document, share, and preserve their heritage through platforms like Wikipedia, Wikidata, and Wikimedia Commons.

  • The Change this Project Will Bring*: This project seeks to create a community of skilled and enthusiastic Wikimedia contributors within AUN who will be confident in editing and writing content. By raising awareness, addressing skepticism, and providing training and practical skills, we aim to transform students into active contributors and advocates of free knowledge.
  • Approach*:
  • *Awareness Training*: We will organize engaging sessions to introduce students to Wikimedia projects, with hands-on demonstrations on editing, creating articles, and participating in Wikimedia campaigns.
  • *Capacity Building*: Students will receive mentorship, training, and resources to contribute to Wikimedia projects before and after the training.
  • *Engaging Lectures*: We will have open discussions with lecturers about the benefits of Wikipedia in academic work and address concerns about its use. We will also introduce them to other Wikimedia projects, such as Wikisource, and highlight the importance of sharing their research with a global audience.

This project aims to address skepticism, bridge the awareness gap, and empower the AUN community to contribute to Wikimedia projects, building a vibrant community of contributors.
