The Wikimedia Tunisia Tour aims to build a new generation of Wikimedians from different towns across Tunisia. The project addresses the lack of Wikimedia awareness and participation outside major cities. By organizing local workshops, we will introduce participants to Wikimedia Tunisia, the global Wikimedia movement, and key projects like Wikipedia, Wikimedia Commons, and Wikidata. Our focus is on youth, students, and underserved communities with limited digital access. One of the main challenges is the regional imbalance in contributor activity and digital literacy. To overcome this, experienced Wikimedians from each town will be involved to share their knowledge and mentor new contributors. These workshops will be interactive and practical, encouraging participants to start editing and engaging with content. We also plan to support new contributors after the workshops to ensure long-term involvement. The goal is to create strong, local Wikimedia communities that can grow and lead future initiatives. This project will help decentralize the Wikimedia movement in Tunisia and ensure a more inclusive and sustainable future.
- 7. What are the planned activities? (required) Please provide a list of main activities. You can also add a link to the public page for your project where details about your project can be found. Alternatively, you can upload a timeline document. When the activities include partnerships, include details about your partners and planned partnerships.
As part of the Wikimedia Tunisia Tour, we will organize 6 workshops in 6 different towns across Tunisia. Each workshop will include 10 participants, focusing on towns where there is already at least one active Wikimedian. These local contributors will act as mentors and help link the new participants to the wider Wikimedia community. The workshops will provide hands-on training in editing Wikipedia, contributing to Wikimedia Commons, and exploring other Wikimedia projects. Through this program, we aim to train at least 60 new editors from diverse regions of Tunisia. The project will also serve to introduce participants to Wikimedia Tunisia and its role in the global free knowledge movement. After the workshops, we will evaluate participants based on their contributions and engagement. The most active 25 participants will be invited to a three-day edit-a-thon camp. This camp will also include a national meeting between new contributors and experienced Wikimedians from Tunisia. The goal is to build a strong and connected network of contributors from across the country. This gathering will allow for knowledge sharing, deeper training, and community bonding. Ultimately, the project aims to create a decentralized, sustainable, and inclusive Wikimedia community across Tunisia.
- 8. Describe your team. Please provide their roles, Wikimedia Usernames and other details. (required) Include more details of the team, including their roles, usernames, Wikimedia group, and whether they are salaried, volunteers, consultants/contractors, etc. Team members involved in the grant application need to be aware of their involvement in the project.
Houssem Eddin Boubakri: As the Trainer and Head of the Project, you will be responsible for leading the workshops, providing training on Wikimedia projects, and overseeing the overall execution of the project. With your extensive experience in Wikimedia initiatives and your leadership in organizing Wiki Loves Monuments and Wiki Loves Earth in Tunisia, you are well-equipped to guide participants.
Naim Garboussi : As the Coordinator with Partners, Naim will manage relationships with key partners, such as the Tunisian Scouts, educational institutions, and local community organizations. Her role will be essential in ensuring seamless collaboration and communication between stakeholders.

Wikimedia Tunisia user group members will be invited to be part of the organizing team.
- 9. Who are the target participants and from which community? How will you engage participants before and during the activities? How will you follow up with participants after the activities? (required)
The target participants for this project are students, teachers, and community members from different cities in Tunisia, specifically in the regions of Tozeur, Gafsa, Sfax, Kebili,Monastir,Beja,Jendouba and Kasserine. The project aims to engage individuals with a passion for learning, cultural preservation, and storytelling, even if they have no prior experience with Wikimedia projects. To attract participants, we will establish partnerships with the Tunisian Scouts, leveraging their extensive network and community presence to reach potential participants. During the activities, participants will receive hands-on training in workshops designed to be interactive and localized, focusing on creating content that reflects their communities. Following the activities, we will provide ongoing mentorship, create online support groups, and organize follow-up events such as webinars and edit-a-thons to keep participants engaged and ensure their sustained contribution to Wikimedia projects.

- 11. How did you discuss the idea of your project with your community members and/or any relevant groups? Please describe steps taken and provide links to any on-wiki community discussion(s) about the proposal. (required) You need to inform the community and/or group, discuss the project with them, and involve them in planning this proposal. You also need to align the activities with other projects happening in the planned area of implementation to ensure collaboration within the community.
We discussed the idea of the project with the Wikimedia Tunisia community by sending a message to the group’s official mailing list. In the message, we introduced the concept of the new project Wikimedia Tunisie Tour, which was developed following the rejection of the Wikipedia Camp Tunisia grant. We explained that this initiative aims to organize a series of workshops in different cities across Tunisia to expand the community and encourage local engagement.
Community members were invited to take part in the project, propose their cities as stops on the tour, and act as local points of contact. We also informed them that the project would culminate in an edit-a-thon and a meeting for Wikimedia Tunisia members and new contributors.
This open communication allowed us to engage the community in the early stages of planning and align the project with ongoing efforts in various regions of Tunisia. We welcomed feedback and participation from members to ensure collaboration and inclusivity.

Learning and metrics
[edit]- 17. What do you hope to learn from your work in this project or proposal? (required)
Through the implementation of the Wikimedia Tunisie Tour, we aim to explore how decentralized outreach and engagement can strengthen the Wikimedia movement in Tunisia. Our learning goals focus on understanding the impact of local involvement, community growth, and sustainable participation.
Here are the main learning questions we hope to answer through this project:
How effective is a regional tour model in reaching new contributors and building Wikimedia communities outside major urban centers? – We want to evaluate whether bringing workshops directly to different cities helps us reach people who would not otherwise engage with Wikimedia projects.
Can identifying and supporting local points of contact lead to sustained local Wikimedia activity after the tour? – We will examine if empowering individuals to become local leaders creates continuity and follow-up actions in their communities.
What types of workshops and formats are most engaging and useful for new participants in Tunisia? – This will help us improve our approach for future activities by identifying what resonates best with different audiences.
Does combining training with a final edit-a-thon and meeting improve retention and a sense of belonging among participants? – We hope to learn whether ending the project with a collective event increases motivation, connection to the broader community, and long-term involvement.
The data collected through participant feedback forms, activity reports, follow-up discussions, and retention tracking will help us answer these questions and improve future outreach and community-building efforts.

- 20. What tools would you use to measure each metrics? Please refer to the guide for a list of tools. You can also write that you are not sure and need support. (required)
To measure the success and impact of this project, we will use the Programs & Events Dashboard (PED), a tool that will allow us to track and evaluate key metrics throughout the initiative. This includes monitoring participant engagement, such as the number of attendees at workshops and their progression in editing skills. The dashboard will also help us assess the amount of content contributed, including articles, images, and edits made by participants after each session. Additionally, we will track the long-term sustainability of the project by measuring continued contributions from participants beyond the workshops, particularly during follow-up activities like the edit-a-thon. By using the PED, we can gather real-time data, make informed decisions, and ensure transparency in reporting to partners and the broader Wikimedia community, ultimately enhancing the effectiveness of the project.
