Part 1: Project and impact

1. Describe the implemented activities and results achieved. Additionally, share which approaches were most effective in supporting you to achieve the results. (required)

During the Wikimedia Tunisia Tour, we organized 8 workshops in 6 different towns across Tunisia: Metlaoui, Gafsa, Nefta, Sbeitla, Sfax (two workshops), and Tunis. Each workshop hosted 10 to 15 participants, allowing for close interaction and effective capacity building.

During the workshops, we introduced the different Wikimedia projects, with a particular focus on Wikipedia. Participants were guided through the process of creating Wikimedia accounts, understanding Wikimedia principles, and learning how to edit and translate articles. The sessions were highly practical, enabling participants to apply what they learned immediately through hands-on editing and translation exercises.

As a result of these workshops, participants gained foundational skills in contributing to Wikimedia projects, and several of them made their first meaningful edits. The workshops also helped identify highly motivated and skilled participants who showed strong potential for further engagement within the Wikimedia community.

Following the workshop series, we selected the most active and promising participants to take part in an advanced 3-day capacity-building program in December, held at the Youth House in Kef. This follow-up training focused on deepening their understanding of Wikimedia projects, strengthening their editing and translation skills, and developing their capacity to become future Wikimedia contributors and community leaders.

Additionally, share the materials and resources that you used in the implementation of your project. (required)

For example:

  • Training materials and guides
  • Presentations and slides
  • Work processes and plans
  • Any other materials your team has created or adapted and can be shared with others

• Presentations and slides https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Wikimedia_Tunisie_Tour_presentation.pdf

  • Work processes and plans

During the workshops, we begin with an introductory presentation covering:

  • An overview of Wikipedia and the Wikimedia projects
  • The mission and activities of Wikimedia Tunisia
  • Key statistics about Tunisia-related content on Wikipedia (Arabic, French, and English editions).

After the introduction, participants are guided to:

  • Create their Wikimedia user accounts
  • Learn basic rules:
  • Neutral point of view
  • Reliable sources
  • Copyright and licenses

Once accounts are created, we move to the practical editing phase, where we assist participants in translating Wikipedia articles from French to Arabic.

The workshop concludes with:

  • Publishing translated articles
  • Reviewing edits together
  • Encouraging continued contribution after the event

Part 2: Learning

4. In your application, you outlined some learning questions. What did you learn from these learning questions when you implemented your project? How do you hope to use this learnings in the future? You can recall these learning questions below. (required)

You can recall these learning questions below: Through the implementation of the Wikimedia Tunisie Tour, we aim to explore how decentralized outreach and engagement can strengthen the Wikimedia movement in Tunisia. Our learning goals focus on understanding the impact of local involvement, community growth, and sustainable participation.

Here are the main learning questions we hope to answer through this project:

How effective is a regional tour model in reaching new contributors and building Wikimedia communities outside major urban centers? – We want to evaluate whether bringing workshops directly to different cities helps us reach people who would not otherwise engage with Wikimedia projects.

Can identifying and supporting local points of contact lead to sustained local Wikimedia activity after the tour? – We will examine if empowering individuals to become local leaders creates continuity and follow-up actions in their communities.

What types of workshops and formats are most engaging and useful for new participants in Tunisia? – This will help us improve our approach for future activities by identifying what resonates best with different audiences.

Does combining training with a final edit-a-thon and meeting improve retention and a sense of belonging among participants? – We hope to learn whether ending the project with a collective event increases motivation, connection to the broader community, and long-term involvement.

The data collected through participant feedback forms, activity reports, follow-up discussions, and retention tracking will help us answer these questions and improve future outreach and community-building efforts.

The Wikimedia Tunisie Tour demonstrated that decentralization is a powerful strategy for building an inclusive and sustainable community. By moving activities beyond major urban hubs, the project successfully fostered trust and engaged new contributors who previously lacked access to the movement.

The success of this model was driven by three core pillars: identifying local points of contact to serve as grassroots leaders, adopting hands-on workshop formats focused on practical editing of locally relevant content, and hosting a final collective event.

The closing edit-a-thon proved vital for participant retention, as it transformed individual learners into a cohesive network with a shared sense of belonging.

Moving forward, these insights will serve as a blueprint for a more resilient and geographically diverse Wikimedia presence across all of Tunisia.

5. Did anything unexpected or surprising happen when implementing your activities? This can include both positive and negative situations. What did you learn from those experiences? (required)

Despite the tour's success, we encountered several unexpected hurdles that provided vital lessons for the future. The short duration of the project proved insufficient for completing activities, teaching us that beginners require more "buffer time" to move from theory to actual publishing. We also faced a leadership gap when many experienced members were unable to assist, highlighting the urgent need to train a new generation of mentors rather than relying on a small core group. Finally, infrastructure issues—specifically a lack of laptops and poor internet in certain regions—strained the workshops' efficiency. These challenges have reshaped our strategy, pushing us to prioritize better technical preparation and more intensive, longer-form training sessions to ensure a smoother experience for new contributors.

6. What is your plan to share your project learnings and results with other community members? If you have already done it, describe how. (required)

To ensure these insights benefit the wider movement, we have adopted a multi-channel sharing strategy. We first presented the project’s key findings and outcomes directly to the local community during the Wikipedia 25th Anniversary celebration in Tunis, allowing for immediate feedback and celebration of our milestones. To reach the global Wikimedia network, all data and lessons learned will be compiled into a final report on Meta-Wiki. This documentation will be open for public discussion, providing a transparent space for community members to analyze the results, ask questions, and adapt our "regional tour" model for their own local contexts.
