1. What is the change that you are trying to bring about and why is this important.

They change am trying to bring about is to involve college of education, Akwanga to the wikimovement thereby recruiting new participants (students), training and grooming them to become active contributors. As this is important to have volunteers contributing to open knowledge thereby saving the world from information inadequacy. This project will train student of college of education, Akwanga to understand and successfully use Wikimedia products(Wikipedia, wikidata) to improve information.

2. Describe your main approaches or strategies to achieve these changes and why you think they will be effective.

- My first approach is to create awareness among 60 students of which I am already in contact with the student government concerning it.

  • My second approach will be to organize workshops to train students on how to contribute and become active contributors.
  • My third approach will be mentorship and followership, of which follow-up/mentorship will be done via social media platforms that will be created for the sake of the project also participants will be added to existing User groups and various ongoing wiki projects.

Why I think the will be effective it’s because the facilitators involve in the project are well experienced in delivering such projects.

3. What are the activities you will be developing and delivering as part of these approaches or strategies?

- There will be a campaign to advertise Wikimedia in the school… banners, posters and stickers will be placed on strategic areas of the school, also graphics posters will be posted to all association and students groups, by association presidents and class reps. Flyers and invitation cards will be distributed to students by association presidents.

  • There will be a 2-day workshop to introduce students to the various Wikimedia sisters project must importantly Wikipedia and Wikidata with the aim of the students becoming Wikimedians (active contributors) and the workshop will focus on

Workshop Day1. Introduction to Wikipedia Participants will be trained on:

  • Wikipedia Policies and guidelines
  • How to create a page, edit a page, creating, add image, tables and referencing

At the end of the workshop participant should be able to create account, understand the policies and guidelines, and carry out edits successfully.

Workshop Day2. Introduction to Wikidata Participants will be trained on:

  • Wikidata policy
  • How to create a Lexeme, Labeling an item and connecting articles to Wikipedia.
  • Wikidata query service

At the end of the workshop participant should be able to create items, lexemes, query items and link items to Wikipedia.

  • There would be prizes to award top 5 editors from each of the workshop to encourage and motivate them.
  • Outreach dashboard will be used to track edits made by participants.

The project focuses on introducing wikimedia and its sisters project to college of Education, Akwanga with more emphasis on Wikipedia and wikidata thus articles and items will be created and improve to further bridge knowledge inequity.

9. Who are the target participants and from which community? How will you engage participants before and during the activities? How will you follow up with participants after the activities?

The target participants are students of college of education, Akwanga of which they haven’t been exposed nor aware of Wikimedia, due to my findings from the student government of no Wikimedia activities been organized or taken place at the institution.

Through invitation cards that will be shared to selected participants by respective class reps and association presidents, Participants will further be engage on social media platforms we the organizers will be created for the sake of the project.

After the workshop follow-up/mentorship will proceed via the already created WhatsApp and telegram platforms that will be created for the sake of the project whilst they will also be added to existing User groups and various ongoing wiki projects.

10. In what ways are you actively seeking to contribute towards creating a safer, supportive, more equitable environment for participants?

I have been able to visit the school and met with officials concerning the project and part of what we discuss was safer venues where the project will be held, of which we have enquired about nice and safe venues were the workshop will take place. And as usual, covid-19 protocol will be observed during the workshop. Participants will also be aware of Wikimedia friendly policy before and during the workshop.

As this project proposal will train participants to successfully use Wikipedia and Wikidata to access, retrieve, modify, interpret and improve information am also:

  • Hoping to learn and see full involvement of college of education, lafia into the wikimovement and also to see recruited participants from the workshop becoming wiki enthusiasts and active contributors to the wikimovement. Hoping to see them participating and engaging in initiatives and wiki related projects.
  • Hoping to see this workshop creating a better Wikimedia experience within Akwanga by Increasing Sustainability for full engagement into the wikimovement.
