Problem Statement

[edit]

Despite Wikipedia’s prominence as one of the most visited websites in Nigeria, public awareness of its volunteer-driven nature and social impact remains limited.

Many Nigerians ; including students, journalists, professionals, and content creators — use Wikipedia daily, yet few truly understand the principles that sustain it.

Key Observations

[edit]
  • Most users are unaware that **Wikipedia is built and maintained by volunteers**.
  • Few understand that **anyone can edit, contribute, or improve content**.
  • There is limited appreciation that **Wikipedia serves as a tool for open knowledge, learning, and collaboration**.

The Knowledge Gap

[edit]

This lack of understanding limits:

  • Broader community participation and volunteer recruitment.
  • Effective advocacy for free knowledge initiatives.
  • Sustainable public support for the Wikimedia movement in Nigeria.
7. What are the planned activities? (required) Please provide a list of main activities. You can also add a link to the public page for your project where details about your project can be found. Community Engagement and Consultation

[edit]

The idea for the"' Wikipedia@25 Nigeria Project'" was developed through open consultation and collaboration within the Wikimedia Nigeria community to ensure inclusiveness, transparency, and strategic alignment with ongoing Wikimedia initiatives in the country.

  1. "'Initial Consultation:'"
The concept of celebrating Wikipedia's 25th anniversary in Nigeria through creative campaigns (including the Wikipedia Celebrity Unboxing Challenge and Impact Contest) was first introduced during Naija Office Hours, Wikimedia Nigeria's bi-monthly community call.

Members provided feedback on campaign structure, potential celebrity involvement, youth engagement strategies, and content focus. Their insights helped refine the proposal and ensure alignment with Wikimedia Nigeria's broader mission to promote open knowledge.

  1. "'On-Wiki and Online Discussion:'"
A summary of the proposal and objectives will be shared with our community members on the Wikimedia User Group Nigeria Meta-Wiki page for open feedback and discussion.
Additional consultations will take place on the Wikimedia Nigeria WhatsApp channels to gather wider input from volunteers and fan club coordinators.
