Wikipedia Awareness Campaign to Osogbo Corpers

Q. Indicate if it is a local, international, or regional proposal and if it involves several countries? (optional)

Local

Q2. If you have answered regional or international, please write the country names and any other information that is useful for understanding your proposal.

R. If you would like, please share any websites or social media accounts that your group or organization has.

1. What is the change that you are trying to bring about and why is this important.

Wikipedia is a vast free encyclopedia of knowledge that provides information on a wide range of topics. However, there are still many people who have not yet heard of Wikipedia, including some Youth Corps Members in Osogbo. Unfortunately, some of these individuals who have attempted to edit Wikipedia articles without proper knowledge have been blocked, which has discouraged them from further editing.

To address this issue, a campaign will be launched to raise awareness and educate Youth Corps Members in Osogbo on how to effectively search for, edit, retrieve, use, and improve material on Wikipedia. The aim of this project is to increase awareness of Wikimedia projects such as Wikipedia, Wikidata, and Wikicommons among National Youth Service Corps members serving in Osogbo.

As part of this campaign, participants will be guided on how to create a Wikipedia account and perform basic editing tasks such as copy editing, adding citations, correcting typos, creating info boxes, creating new Wikidata items, and adding statements to existing items without facing any blocks.

2. Describe your main approaches or strategies to achieve these changes and why you think they will be effective.

To promote the Wikimedia Projects among the Osogbo National Youth Corps members, I have developed a comprehensive strategy that involves both offline and online promotional activities.

The first step is to raise awareness about Wikipedia and its sister projects, as well as encourage participation in these projects. This will be achieved through a three-day promotion, training, and edit-a-thon for the Youth Corps members stationed in Osogbo. The event will comprise of a two-day physical event and a one-day online event.

During the event, the participants will be trained on how to create and edit Wikipedia pages, how to gather and develop educational content under a free license or in the public domain, and how to disseminate this content effectively and globally. Experienced volunteer editors will be on hand to train new editors and enhance the abilities of current editors.

To ensure the effectiveness of the strategy, the awareness campaign will continue for a month, utilizing the various communication channels used by the Youth Corp members. I will also work closely with the Corpers Liaison officers and members of the community with access to different platforms to follow up with new editors and provide support as needed.

Overall, I am confident that this strategy, with the help of a skilled group of Wikimedia editors, will successfully promote awareness of the Wikimedia Projects among the Osogbo National Youth Corps members.

3. What are the activities you will be developing and delivering as part of these approaches or strategies?

Sensitization and outreach activities will be conducted before, during, and after the program. A call for participation will be sent out to attract interested individuals, and those selected will be guided through the account creation process. Additionally, a WhatsApp group will be created to provide updates and information about the program.

The physical edit-a-thon will be held for two days, and new users will be introduced to Wikimedia/Wiki projects, and the basics of Wikipedia. Participants will learn the correct ways to search, edit, obtain, utilize, and improve information on Wikipedia. On day two, the focus will be on Wikidata and Wikicommons as a Wikimedia project, and participants will learn how to create and modify Wikidata items and add media to Wikicommons.

One online edit-a-thons will also be held on Wikipedia Wikicommons and Wikidata. These sessions will provide a platform for participants' retraining, guidance, and follow-up. It will also be targeted towards individuals who were unable to participate in the physical exercises.

At the end of the event, an online Wiki contest will be held, focusing on the three Wiki projects. The winners will be announced, and certificates and approved presents will be awarded to the winners. This competition will serve as an incentive for participants to actively engage in the program and contribute to the Wikimedia/Wiki projects.

Overall, this project aims to increase awareness of the Wikimedia/Wiki projects among Osogbo Youth Corp members through sensitization, outreach, and training activities. The online and physical edit-a-thons, as well as the Wiki contest, will provide a platform for participants to learn, engage and contribute to the Wikimedia/Wiki projects.
