WIKIPEDIA PAGES EVERY WIKIPEDIA SHOULD HAVE

The Wikipedia Pages every Wikipedia should have is a continuation of the Wikipedia Vital Articles and includes over 1000 and 10,000 articles.[1]

They are important because of the following reasons: 1. Coverage: they cover more topics and are broader in scope. For example many topics will fall under the article “Science”, and many articles will rely on History, such as world wars, ancient civilisations, culture, religion etc 2. They are essential to other Wikipedia articles, eg, scientific method may also be very vital to different scientific methodology related articles eg Newtons Law of Motion, Physics etc 3. Notability: Individuals within the People section represent the pinnacles of their field with a material impact on the course of humanity, such as Albert Einstein in "Inventors and scientists", William Shakespeare in "Authors", and Genghis Khan on "Leaders”. 4. No bias: These articles represent no (Western) biases, they emphasise on the most important topics regardless of their race or geography. 5. Page views: These articles are the most widely visited and has high number of readers.

Challenges • Most of these articles (every Wikipedia should have) are absent or are stubs on Hausa Wikipedia and therefore not connected to Hausa pages on Wikidata • The fastest and easiest way to create these articles is through content translation; and from my experience as an administrator, there is gap on how to use Content Translation effectively on Hausa Wikipedia (despite many attempts to cover tackle that, due to in flow of newbies on a daily basis • I have reviewed many articles created through translation and find out most of them carry a lot of errors due to lack of thorough read-and-repair from most especially newbies • Some editors don’t take enough time to go through articles after being published, this also leave a lot of errors. • Many editors are not aware of how to use translation tool properly

Solutions • We will create at least 1000 articles (out of 10,000 articles every Wikipedia should have list) during the campaign, with good translation and proof reading • We will invite experienced editors (and some administrators) from Hausa Wikipedia in training and proof reading created articles during the campaign • We will go through every article created and delete bad translated articles and call upon the editor for correction and guidance • We will train and retain editors and keep on encouraging them in making valuable contribution to Wikipedia.

7. What are the planned activities? (required) Please provide a list of main activities. You can also add a link to the public page for your project where details about your project can be found. Alternatively, you can upload a timeline document. When the activities include partnerships, include details about your partners and planned partnerships.

1. online campaign and training: we will invite editors from Hausa community to join the training. we will also invite sysops to educate and review articles created during the event 2. offline campaign and training: we will visit internet cafes in Katsina and Hassan Usman Polytechnic and invite interested people to participate and join WIkimedia Movement 3. Editathon: we will organise contest and award editors base on merit of creating excellent articles. We chose these activities online and offline training, edit-a-thons, and outreach, because they are proven strategies within the Wikimedia movement for attracting, training, and retaining contributors. Online sessions help reach a wide audience, while offline training offers personal engagement, especially for new editors. Editathons create a fun, competitive environment that increases participation and productivity. Outreach in places like internet cafes and institutions targets people already familiar with computers and increases awareness of Wikimedia projects. These activities are effective because they combine education, motivation, and hands-on practice.

8. Describe your team. Please provide their roles, Wikimedia Usernames and other details. (required) Include more details of the team, including their roles, usernames, Wikimedia group, and whether they are salaried, volunteers, consultants/contractors, etc. Team members involved in the grant application need to be aware of their involvement in the project.

Our project team consists of four experienced Wikimedia contributors who will each play active roles in ensuring the successful implementation of this campaign (Wikipedia Pages Every Wikipedia Should Have). All members are volunteers and have experience facilitating Wikimedia activities. The team includes two active administrators and two experienced editors within the Wikimedia community.

  • Manaf205 – Facilitator: He will assist in outreach, training, and documentation of the project. He is a highly active contributor with experience in several Wikimedia campaigns.
9. Who are the target participants and from which community? How will you engage participants before and during the activities? How will you follow up with participants after the activities? (required)

Our target participants are people who have computer operation skills and are willing to contribute voluntarily to Wikipedia. We will invite people from internet cafes and higher institutions such as Katsina Polytechnic to participate.

Before the activities, we will promote the campaign through social media and direct outreach. During the campaign, we will provide online and offline training.
